Imagine that someday Jesus will say,
“Come with me! We are blessed by my
Father, so let’s inherit the kingdom
that has been ready for us since I
created the world,” (paraphrase, verse
36).
Recently I attended one of the many
evening evangelistic meetings in
progress around the conference. There
were so many guests that members
were surrendering their seats so
visitors could sit down! I stood with
an inward chuckle of joy.
I was deeply moved as I watched
Adventists who were so in-tune
with the Holy Spirit that they
spontaneously vacated their seats
without even being asked. I began
to think about the scene I had just
observed.
Why did many members (children
of the Kingdom) take ownership of
the meetings, standing for an hour so
a stranger could be seated? And why
did other believers just sit there like
they were the guests?
I figured it out. Some members
knew the rest of the Forgotten Text
(verse 35)! “I was hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked,
sick, in prison, and you provided for me.”
Soul-winning is never about me. It’s about the
other person.
I also saw that, “We act out all the faith we
possess,” (PH098 20.2, EG White).
If I am being “born again” I am on an urgent soul
quest!
Friendship is what keeps guests coming back.
Care keeps the Holy Spirit fresh in our hearts. Love
makes ours a sticky church. Everyone is vital to the
growth of God’s Kingdom!
Thank you Indiana Conference members for
already embracing the first of the Four Pillars voted
at our last constituency meeting; “Embrace the
mission of Christ to save the world.” (Read about the
Four Pillars and how they reflect Indiana’s united
mission, page 8.)
Join me as we embolden our response to Jesus!
Claim your heritage because it’s what our Father
has destined. With our new and old friends, accept
the birthright prepared for us from the foundation
of the world.

Indiana Health MISSION
THE REALITY
The mission of the Indianapolis
Outreach Coalition is:
CHEW ON THIS
REACH Indianapolis
Kortnye V. Hurst
The Adventist health movement generated out of the Hoosier State is now known
amongst North American Adventists as
REACH Indianapolis.
“It’s trending in other Indiana cities (Terre
Haute, Jeffersonville, Ft. Wayne), but the
North American Division (NAD) looking
glass watches closely now. The brethren
at the NAD believe Indianapolis reflects
major cities in many local conferences.” Van
speaks of the growing numbers of Hoosier
Adventists who have and are taking REACH
Indianapolis as their personal mission.
One such example is Neil Richmund, a
marketing expert at Springcan and member
of the Chapel West Church.
Web presence was achieved in March
2013 as Richmund helped build and launch
two health-centric websites, IndyAdventist
Health.org and HonestAge.com.
IndyAdventistHealth.org and HonestAge.
com work together. IndyAdventistHealth.
org is designed specifically for a Seventh-
day Adventist audience. It provides
updates as to progress generating a
health movement! It contains videos
that articulate what and how this will
be achieved, and also equips site visitors with posters members can share in
their local fitness clubs, health stores
and churches.
HonestAge.com is the site Adventist
Hoosiers aim to take viral. It is the site
aimed to help 100,000 people discover
their real health age! The IOC offers
this to the community as a small first
step into a public service in total-being
wellness.
The NAD views REACH Indianapolis as a pilot program. Paul Brantley, a
vice president of the North American
Division, with particular responsibilities for strategic planning, research,
and assessment, regularly checks on
REACH Indianapolis. Brantley seeks
to observe the program introduced by
Adventist Hoosiers so the dry-run may
be adjusted and implemented in major
cities nationally.
“To reach the Greater Indianapolis
Area with the distinctive, Christcentered Seventh-day Adventist
message of hope and wholeness.”
According to Perceptgroup.
com, thirty-nine percent (39%) of
Indianapolis households have “no
faith involvement” compared to the
United States average of thirty-five
percent (35%).
Indianapolis is the 12th
largest city
in the
United
States.
Adventist health
reform has already
made a splash in the

We endeavor to meet the needs
of our people and share reports
with our members. Here are a
few of the ways.
To communicate the leading of the
Holy Spirit with our constituents
in such a manner that they can be
informed, inspired and delighted
to be a Seventh-day Adventist. We
are trying to make communication
accessible in various forms for
Indiana Conference members and
to focus on the Four Pillars voted at
the last Constituency Meeting.
We want to encourage members to
step forward in the name of Jesus to
win souls for the Kingdom with a
sense of urgency. Our freedoms are
in the process of being blocked or
taken away. Today is the best time
we have to talk openly in a spirit
of friendship and love with nonbelievers. Every Indiana Conference
member is asked to befriend and
win someone to Jesus. Let everyone
take their post of duty and work for
souls.
4 CONNECTION May 2013
1) Foster an evangelism model that promotes
relationships and results with people while
expecting the Holy Spirit to bring
the harvest.
2) Conduct training conferences/retreats for
networking with pastors twice a year and six
times a year for NIM (new-in-the-ministry)
pastors.
3) Develop friendships with the pastors by
visiting with each one annually, phoning more
regularly and creating regional opportunities
for peer fellowship quarterly.
4) Offer an elders’ training opportunity each
fall in
the conference.
5) Provide lay training opportunities for
members each spring.
6) Encourage pastors, leaders, and members to
daily experience a personal relationship with
Christ.

The Education Department’s vision encompasses
supporting the highest quality Adventist Christian
education to the largest number of Seventh-day
Adventist students and those who would like to join
us. Accomplishing this includes a wide variety of
options and innovative educational modalities. (See
Pillar 2, pg 8.)
The education and youth departments work closely
together. We coordinate calendars, support each
other on a wide variety of children’s and youth
ministries including Pathfinders, summer camp,
Bible Summit, and youth rallies. The youth director
assists in marketing the church schools and academy
and the education director encourages teachers to
involve students in conference and local church
activities. The education and ministerial department
directors work together to foster close relationships
between pastors and teachers. One day seminars for
pastors and teachers have been held twice a year with
new events planned and scheduled.
It is the goal of the Youth
Department to create as many
opportunities as possible for
young people to know Jesus

In addition to wills and trusts,
Living Wills, Health Care

Mission-driven couple
Lyle & Runette Litzenberger
RETIRING
On January 1, 2013, Lyle and Runette retired after 46 and 19 years of
service, respectively.
Lyle was 21 when he began working as assistant Book and Bible House
manager for Southern New England Conference while he was still attending
Atlantic Union College.
An appetite for service led Runette to Portland, Oregon, in 1973
where she worked at Portland Adventist Hospital and later became the
Administrative Assistant for the President of the North Pacific Union
Conference.
Lyle and Runette met and married in 1975 and lived in Pennsylvania
where Lyle managed the Adventist Book Center. Soon after their marriage
they received a call to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Lyle was Union Treasurer.
Runette said she grew up wanting to be a missionary, so she was thrilled when
they accepted the call to the mission field.
Their work for the Lord and the church led them to many different
places including Guam and a variety of states in the USA. Lyle and
Runette have spent time working at churches, conferences, unions,
academies, and colleges and universities.
In 1999 they began work at the North American Division Evangelism
Institute located at the Adventist Theological Seminary on the campus of
Andrews University. While there Lyle was NADEI’s business manager. They
also worked as a ministry team training seminarians, pastors, lay people,
and conference leaders.
While they have enjoyed the variety of jobs and places over the years,
they have always had a special place in their hearts for working with
Christian education. “It’s been a passion to help every student who wants
to have a Christian Education to be able to afford it,” Lyle said.
The inspiring couple shared the sweet fragrance of Christ’s love with
IA for three years, he as business manager, and she as the principal’s
administrative assistant for two years. Lyle is now volunteering at IA until
the beginning of May when they make their 16th move in 37 years to
settle in the Orlando, Florida area.
The Indiana Conference is extremely grateful for the time and talents
they have shared with us and we pray God will continue to bless them in
retirement.
September, 22, 2013— Let’s Move Day is anticipated
to be the climax to a week’s “national fitness party.”
Let’s Move Day is expected to amplify the visibility of
the Indianapolis Outreach Coalition’s (IOC) health
efforts and to carry endorsements from the White
House. This year, Indianapolis is named as Let’s Move
Day’s city of emphasis by Katia Reinhart, MSN, CRNP,
FNP-BC, PHCNS-BC, FCN, director of Adventist
Health Ministries.
According to AdventistsInStepForLife.org, “In 2010
First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let’s Move to
fight the epidemic of childhood obesity.” Let’s Move
inspired the creation of Let’s Move Day, an NAD
national initiative seeking to aid the First Lady in her
endeavors, and incorporating the spiritual element
enjoyed within Adventist culture.
April 27 and 28th, approx. 200 volunteers from
Indy-metro churches operated the Indiana Conference’s health ministry booth at the Channel 13 Health
& Fitness Expo. An estimated 15,000 people visited
the Indiana State Fair Grounds to seek a better life.
The IOC’s booth consisted of nine stations.
“Our proposal to Channel 13 was so well received
that Channel 13 moved other booths to a different
location to make room for our uniquely large booth,
and to give us a highly visible location at the expo,”
Alex Rodriguez, Carmel pastor, the IOC’s coordinator
for Lifestyle Expos, said.
Susan Landess says, “We are moving the Heartland
Health and Wellness Convention from Anderson to
the very Crossroads of America for the convention’s
5th year.”
Previous years combined have hosted approximately
2,000 health-seekers. Seating is limited to 400 attendees and costs $129.00. Registration began May
1 at hhaw.eventbrite.com. This year’s sessions feature
the who’s-who of the international health community, including, Gwen Foster, previous health czar to
the city of Philadelphia, Rip Esselstyn, author of The
Engine 2 Diet, Dick Tibbits, author of Forgive to Live,
Chef AJ, Executive Culinary Chef to the stars, John
Pierre, nutrition and fitness consultant for 20 years,
Dr. Pam Popper, naturopath and author of Solving
America’s Healthcare Crisis, Dr. Michael Greger, a
founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the Director of Public Health and
Animal Agriculture at the Humane Society of the
United States, Dr. Phil Collins, a specialist in Lifestyle
Medicine.

UNITED MISSION Around Indiana
The Four Pillars of the Indiana Conference strengthen our
resolve toward UNITY and urge us forward into MISSION.
1) Mission and evangelism outreach:
“We are all about this, for this is what He
has called us to do.”
“We were pleased to discover the
conference is working on
projects that call for gifts
less often recognized in
evangelism.” —Jessica
Dellen, Anderson, IN.
Jessica and her husband,
Chris, are principals at Delmar, an Indybased marketing firm that aided the IOC’s
initial marketing and PR effort.
2) Strengthening Adventist education
for Adventist students:
We need to find a way to provide
Adventist education for every church
that wants to have a school.”
“Parents have a choice now. Instead
of saying I have three kids and can
only afford to send two to an Adventist,
Christian school, now they don’t have
to choose. ” —Darcel Castañeda,
Indianapolis Junior Adademy principal.
Castañeda explains how the school’s
choice to accept scholarship monies given to
students from the state, often referred to as
“the voucher program,” has enabled them to
serve more students. In turn, student tuitions
are paid in full with cash, substantially
increasing cash flow and a
balanced operating fund.
Since admiting students
who enroll with voucher
monies, IJA bought online
subscriptions, helping
them in science and
keyboarding. IJA added

class rooms, installed a new gymnasium floor
and lighting in the lobby and office. They
have also been blessed to upgrade the heating
system and offer a distance learning program
which broadcasts online classes to IJA.
“It’s one-on-one,” Darcel explains about the
distance learning program IJA broadcasts out
of Forest Lake Academy. “There’s a teacher for
every subject. They can see students and meet
with them outside of class. They also offer
online tutoring.”
3) Provide safe churches for young
adults to grow into disciples.
“Many people attending do not normally
attend a church,” —Billy Jamieson,
Indianapolis, IN, a co-founder of the
new youth plant, Encounter said of their
downtown worship.
“[Most people who attend] only join corporate
worship on the Sabbaths Encounter meets. We feel
we hit our target audience,” Jamieson said.
The church plant is specifically structured
to meet the needs of young adults who do
not have a regular church home. They meet
the 2nd and 4th Sabbaths of each month.
Recently, Encounter started working with
Outreach Inc., a program that helps homeless
youth in Indianapolis with physical, spiritual
and emotional needs.
“We get into the city and encourage the
youth to be in school and help them find
jobs.” Jamieson said.

the temple of the Holy Spirit, who
lives in you and was given to you by

1 Timothy 4:7-9 (NLT).
4) Strengthen dysfunctional or dying
churches: “We want to provide Small
Church CPR.”
Sometimes we can be
closed minded—it’s our
school, it’s our church.
Learn to listen to others.
When we listen to others
in the community (and to each other), we
have the choice to ignore what they say,
or to see something valid. We can make
a choice about who we are and how we Poten
are perceived. If it’s good, how can we
get more mileage out of it? If it’s bad, how
can we change to be viewed as being
like Christ?” —Audrey Watson-Payne,
LaPorte, Indiana.
Audrey is the first lady of the LaPorte
Adventist Church. The church exudes a
remarkable warmth to guests and members,
contributing to significant growth for Door

4-7. IA not only hosted the 2013 Indiana Academy
Music Festival and annual Sabbath Celebration, but also
held Preview Days, beginning Sabbath evening, April 6,
and ending on the 7th.
Indiana Academy Music Festival was highly
successful! With 192 participants we had to take down
the festival’s online registration several times. We
would evaluate how on earth we could arrange things
to accommodate all of the students wanting to attend,
and reopen registration with adaptations so remaining
students could register.
The festival choir was directed by Mr. Stephen Zork,
the director of Choral Studies at Andrews University.
The choir performed one piece for Sabbath Celebration
church service, and then performed five pieces for an
afternoon concert. Mr. Philip Byrd, IA Music Director,
coordinated the much-loved event. We already look
forward to next year’s festival and seeing all of you
back again!
The same weekend, 32 potential students, along with

Dr. Jud Lake is Professor of Preaching and
Adventist Studies at Southern Adventist University.
This is what he says about his seminar:
“Some believe that Leviticus 26 contains a prophetic
time period of 2520 years similar to the 2300 days
of Daniel 8. This time period is related to last day
events and is taking some pockets of Adventism
by storm. This seminar provides a critique of this
teaching. This seminar will put the 2520 theory to the
test of biblical teaching and Adventist history. In the
end, it will suggest a better way to experience revival.”

Jim Hammer, author of Victory Over a Critical Spirit will share
important insights for every Adventist.
Plus:
“Our church is often plagued with critical comments and
a negative spirit. Instead of reaching out to those in the
world, we criticize them. And if they do come to church,
we are quick to point out their faults in an effort to help
them “grow.” Of course, we aren’t any better with our fellow
brothers and sisters in Christ. We like to point out what we
think other people are doing wrong. If we are to finish the
work of spreading the gospel to the world, we must unite
and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit. We must become like
Jesus and banish our critical spirit and let the Holy Spirit
develop a loving character in us.”
