What You Need to Know
• The live birth rate ranged by Health Neighbourhood from 4.5 to 22.7 per 1,000.
• Birth rates are highest in Neighbourhoods in northern and east Ajax, northern Whitby, northeast
Oshawa, and northern Bowmanville. These areas have new housing developments that attract
young families.
Indicator Notes
• The live birth rate, or crude birth rate, is the number of live births in hospital (based on mother's
place of residence, not where the birth occurred) divided by the total population, multiplied by 1,000.
• Source: Hospital In-Patient Discharges 2010-2012, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care,
intelliHEALTH ONTARIO & 2011 Census, Statistics Canada.
• The number of births and population size were based on 2011 hospitalization and 2011 Census data
respectively. We excluded births with postal codes that were missing or could not be coded to a
Neighbourhood. Population counts from the 2011 Census differed from the Statistics Canada 2011
estimates that are commonly used by the Health Department, which are adjusted for undercounts.
As a result, counts and rates for Durham Region and the municipalities may vary from those
presented in other Health Department reports.
• Neighbourhoods were sorted into quintiles (five equal groupings) based on the total number of births
in the Neighbourhood, i.e., quintiled by births. This means that for Quintile 5, 20% of the births in
Durham Region occurred in six Neighbourhoods.
• Neighbourhoods were compared with Durham Region based on their confidence intervals. Those
with rates that were lower or higher had 95% confidence intervals that did not overlap with those of
Durham Region and were significantly different.
Release Date: January 2015.
