January 2017 CHECK THE CLUB CALENDAR VOL. 87 FOR IMPORTANT EVENTS ISSUE 1 Photo above: by Billy Pratt Flying over the Andes mountains enroute to Puerto Williams, Chile to pick up my sailboat for my sail around Cape Horn Commodore’s Report We have been working very hard at the plans for the sea wall replacement project. Karl Benzer rounded up four bidders for the project and spent a lot of time with the engineer and with each bidder showing what the BOG wanted to do. We have the bids in and the results are disappointing. The difference between the highest bidder and the lowest bidder was $100,000. Needless to say, the highest bidder is no longer in the running. The board broke the project into three parts, the Snipe harbor, the point at the south end of the Snipe harbor, and the west hoist area. The total bid for all three areas, done the way the BOG wants them done, came in around $300,000. This entails poured concrete reinforced walls along the entire line of the sea walls with built in aluminum ladders and risers to which we will attach floating docks. After much discussion, the BOG has sent Karl back to each of the bidders with recommendations for cost cutting (from us and the engineer) that will not affect the integrity of the walls or our vision. At this point, we don’t have a firm figure after the changes. We hope to have those firm numbers by the membership meeting on Thursday. I will host a town hall style meeting on Thursday at 1730 to show the plans and the BOG recommendations to everyone who wants and is able to attend. I will also take questions about the project. We will also discuss options to make up the difference between the funds we have on hand and the funds that will be needed. Let me say up front, I will not support an assessment for the funds. What the BOG is planning to present to the membership is the idea that members who are able can pre-pay their Capital Dues for the next two or three years. That $400 or $600 from as many members as possible who will do so, should provide all the funding needed to finish the project. In addition, any member who wants to do so may contribute to the project. If you are a senior member and don’t pay the $200 per year capital dues, feel free to put money in the pot. As a last resort, if enough people don’t want to pre-pay Capital Dues, the BOG will prioritize the three parts to the project and complete as many of them as we are able with the available funding. Obviously, the BOG would like to complete all three parts and finish the project so future boards won’t have to struggle with the remaining part. There are practical reasons for this. If one part is put off until some other year, the costs for that part will increase as material costs go up and as the contractor has to bring in cranes and track hoes that would already be here if all three parts are done at one time. In addition, if the third part is not done, it will continue to deteriorate and could fail at a point where we can’t do the work because of water levels. We need to get this done while the water level is down. It won’t get any cheaper down the road. At this point, the club has available approximately $200,000 on hand for the project. Depending upon the reductions we are able to obtain, we are looking at having to raise about $70,000—$80,000 to do all three parts of the project. Please come to the town hall meeting at 1730 and the membership meeting at 1930 to vote on the project and the direction you want the BOG to take. I appreciate your support. Billy Pratt, Commodore 2 Vice Commodore’s Report Yes the dock water project is moving forward. And again, almost all of the project will be done by donation. I still receive numerous emails and texts asking about the project and/or so many just Dandy and Wonderful ideas on how the project should be designed or handled…If you were smart! Unfortunately the cold weather has slowed progress down. And btw, thank you for ALL of those Wonderful ideas and comments. Some may be just a little better than others. But none the less, good, bad, or indifferent, I always listen to Everyone’s ideas. On to other business. We will be having a Silent Auction that will run for the next two months. That is to say, this auction will run December, January, and end on the February membership meeting night. As of right now, it will include (more information to follow): Catalina 22 w/trailer Flying Scott w/trailer Flying Scott w/trailer (yes there are two) Flying Junior w/trailer 420 w/trailer Electric Smoker One set of sails for a Flying Scott (Spin, Main & Jib) All of the boats above come with one set of sails. We will post flyers with descriptions of the items (year, make, model, etc.) on the club office door. All of the boats will be moved to an area west of the HD&A shed. You will place your bids in a provided envelope located on the table next to the door. All of the items will have a reserve. The winners will be announced at the February meeting. IF you win a boat, that DOES NOT mean you necessarily get a dry slip for the vessel. Photos of the items are on the next page. As usual, I will be looking to the future for the club. Soon I will be contacting some of your for participation in this year’s Planning and/or Futures Committee. I will also have group discussions/meetings for the membership to attend periodically throughout the year. I wish all of you Happy Holidays and a Happy New year. Stan Nieves Vice Commodore 3 1970’s - Flying Scot 1973- Catalina 22 1975 - Flying Scot 4 1982 - 420 1989 - Flying Junior New Masterbuilt Smoker 5 Rear Commodore’s Report We have an opportunity to get the overhead lines across the South fence buried for free. To get this done we will need to move the boats and trailers from dry slips 154 to 219 out to the East fence area. We need to get this done immediately so that OG&E can proceed with staking the area for their work and get permits to excavate the area. Please move your boat or trailer as soon as you possibly can. The winter solstice party aftermath included stopped up drains in the kitchen area. After trying to snake the drain and recovering a lot of potato peels I had to give up and get a plumber out to clean it out professionally. This cost the club $120.00. Please refrain from putting any solids down the kitchen drains in the future. I’m looking for a volunteer to help me organize a calling committee. It would be helpful to have the members contacted by phone for work parties and various projects like the big boat move coming up. Please let me know if you can help me with that. If you have any requests or complaints please email me at [email protected] . Thanks, Ric Drennen 6 Happy New Year. Somewhere between 125 and 150 people came out to ensure good luck throughout 2017 with a heaping helping of black eyed peas and some unbeatable fellowship. The weather was perfect and we even had a few brave souls venture forth for a sail. I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped cooking, serving and cleaning. Long time helpers Don Steeber and Naudine Greenawalt and Bayless Kirtley were their usual indispensable help. Myona Baser, Bill and Melissa Brett, Bill and Gay McMillan, Art Caples, Bruce McDermott, Melissa Shafer, Scott Greenawalt all went above and beyond. Several others (too many to be named) all pitched in where needed to make the day a success. Hope to see everyone next year!
