Using the timetable to get course codes

Preparing for Course Registration at Orientation
1.
Have a pencil and some paper ready to create a ‘schedule’. Please note you will register in both
Fall and Winter term courses at Orientation. Use your own or the blank one posted on the
Orientation webpage.
2.
Read “Academic Advising-General Course Selection” document FIRST.
3.
Read “First Year Course Selection by Major” document to learn what courses you should take in
first year for your major. Write these course codes down.
4.
Read “Academic Advising-General Course Selection” and “First Year Course Descriptions
Durham” documents to help you choose other ‘elective’ courses for first year. All the above
documents can be found on this Orientation webpage www.trentu.ca/durham/orientation
5.
Use the next 3 pages of this document to obtain the 6 digit express codes (synonyms) which
you will use to register in courses on orientation day (June 21/2015).
Using the timetable to get course codes
The Academic Timetable (www.trentu.ca/timetable) is an important document which gives you
many term specific details about each course: course description, pre-requisites, who is teaching the
course, when and where the course is offered and the ‘synonym’ for each specific time it is offered (this
is important for registration, see express registration).
On the ‘Academics’ menu click on ‘Academic Timetable’ under ‘Quick Links’ at the bottom of the page
or go to www.trentu.ca/timetable
2
Upon opening the Academic Timetable, the page to the right will
appear.
*** These links at the top can be helpful in understanding how
to read the timetable!
Once you’re ready to find your courses in
the timetable, you will have to enter:
1.
Which term you are interested

Read’ Academic Advising-General Course Selection Advice’
2. The location where you would like to take your

Here is an example of how classes will show up based on the options you have chosen
on the previous page. To understand some of the sections better there is a breakdown
below to make it clearer. Make a note of ‘synonym’ code for your course choice.
(Please note some classes have labs (LAB) or seminars (SEM) all of which have a separate synonym. When planning the
synonym includes the lab/seminar/workshop times and the lecture times for your timetable)
• Course – This is the official course code of the class (here PSYC-1020H-A). Here is a link to all program codes
http://scheduler.trentu.ca/AcademicTimetable/TimetableInformation/page2.htm
• Course Section – Provided under this heading is a link with more information about the course, including a brief description of the course and section information.
• Status – The status of the course refers to whether the course is open or closed for students to register. A ‘Waitlist’ option may also be available for classes that are expecting
numbers in the class to shift.
• Term – This states which term the class is running (i.e. Full year (FW), Fall (FA), Winter (WI), or beginning of Summer (S61) versus the second half of Summer (S62))
• Synonym – The set of numbers listed under this heading is used for express registration NOTE THE 6 DIGIT CODES FOR YOUR COURSES AND BRING TO ORIENTATION
• Description – This is the basic title of the course, you can also click on the Course Section to see more information about each course.
• Cross-List – Classes that can fulfill a requirement in two different majors will have the same course code with the other major’s short-form under this heading.
• Campus – This tells you which campus your class is located at (or, if the class is online, you will see ‘Web-based Course’ instead).
• Type – This states whether the class is a lecture, seminar, lab or workshop. If the class requires two of these, both will be listed.
• Bldg (Building) – Which building is the class in? Look under this heading to find out. OSH is what you are looking for here.
• Room – This tells you what room number the class is in.
• Day – This tells you what day(s) of the week the class will run.
• Start and End – These two headings give you the start and end times of the class.
• Instruction – Under this heading is a brief description of the format of your class. Although this information can often be inferred based on what is provided by the previous
headings, this section may mention specifics, such as if the classes run weekly versus bi-weekly.
• Faculty – This section states the instructor(s) of the class. –This is often not known until later
