This fall Ursuline has enjoyed success in a myriad of areas including sports, the drama production, dance show, choir show, Model UN, FatherDaughter, and Homecoming. We have also seen a resurgence of school spirit with the institution of spirit points and a renewed sense of reverence in our liturgies. Our chapel has been the site of breathtaking Day of the Dead and Nativity Displays. We have made staff changes to buttress our Admissions and Advancement efforts. We now have Co-Directors of Admissions Lisa Ormond and Kathleen Kelly who brought 115 girls here on Preview Day and continue a full court press, visiting many elementary schools where we have never been before. They are working very closely with Margaux Hardy who was appointed Director of Advancement. Margaux is bringing fresh ideas and energy to her department. Our building plans were approved by the Board of Supervisors and we have contracted with an architecture firm to move forward with our parking lot project. This is the first step in our building plan. Our master plans involve moving all auto traffic to the outskirts of campus to create a commons area in front of the administration building with the addition of a new library and reconfigured classroom space. The parking lot should be completed this summer. We received a clean audit with no material weaknesses in our first year with Lautze & Lautze, our new accounting firm. And we recently received a $40,000 gift from the family of Inamay Larkin to increase her named scholarship fund. Many students will benefit from their generosity in years to come. Through a generous donation from the Class of 1997, our students now have a new scoreboard in the gymnasium. Jog-a-thon had terrific student participation and we have achieved 86% of our goal. Donations continue to come in. We have purchased and installed an LCD screen for the lobby with part of the proceeds. Christmas Families received their deliveries and, as always, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our Ursuline families. The Annual Fund is progressing a bit slowly this year, but we continue to send out reminders. This is a very important source of revenue for the school as it bridges the gap between the actual cost of an Ursuline education ($2817 per student) and the tuition paid. If you have yet to do so, please consider sending in your contribution. Our WASC report is in the final stage of completion in preparation for the March accreditation visit. We are looking forward to all that spring semester has to offer: senior service project board presentations, spring sports, the musical, dance and choir shows and graduation. In 1898 the sisters settled in Saint Helena. By 1917, they ventured to San Francisco’s Outer Mission District and even spent a short time in Merced. This short article introducing Elmhurst Ursuline Academy in Saint Helena is a glimpse into living history. Recent contact with the current Saint Helena Catholic Elementary School principal is a promising source of information, as is the pursuit of graduates of Elmhurst who reside in the Napa Valley area and beyond. The sisters closed the Elmhurst Academy in 1950, returning to Santa Rosa and leaving fond memories in the hearts of their pupils. Some of you, as you read this article, have history with the sisters in Saint Helena and we invite you to share your memories. The Academy archives contain official records as well as descriptions of a variety of school events. The St. Helena Star, the local museum, the parish school all serve as venues to showcase these living memories. Please share your memories of these sisters, who were called “Mothers”: Florence, Therese, Alphonse, Madeleine, Columba, Elizabeth, Bernadette, Paul, Rita, Agatha, William, Peter, Bernard, Cephas, Gertrude, Stanislaus, Mercedes, Dominic, Ignatius, Patricia. Send your stories and photos to Sister Francis Kearney at [email protected]. Elmhurst Ursuline Academy in the early 1900’s Inamay Larkin Memorial Scholarship Receives Generous Gift By Kathleen Kelly Co-Director of Admissions Ursuline’s commitment to providing the finest education for the young women entrusted to our care would not be possible without the support of alumnae and friends. Such support is exemplified by the recent gift the Inamay Larkin Memorial Scholarship received in December from Norma B.Winter (Inamay Larkin’s sister). Norma, who passed away in August of 2008, often told her daughter Romona, “Please make sure that $40,000 from my estate goes to Inamay’s scholarship to help a deserving student at Ursuline.” Her wish was granted and Ursuline High School is extremely grateful and proud to be associated with such a wonderful family. Inamay graduated from Ursuline in 1955. She contracted polio in 1957 and lived many years in an iron lung. Her classmates at Ursuline loved her dearly and were loyal friends throughout her life. Inamay eventually moved in with her father and lived with polio for close to 40 years before passing away in her early 60’s. The Inamay Larkin Memorial Scholarship was established to remember this wonderful woman who was an inspiration to all who knew her. 4 Taken in 1957 just before Inamay contracted polio. Inamay modeled this outfit for a newspaper ad. COMMUNITY SERVICE A Real Spiritual Education Experience by Jennifer Gray, Ursuline Yearbook Advisor and English Teacher “This was my first time volunteering at Project Homeless Connect. I was struck by the spirit of gratitude, kindness and genuine human dignity present in each person: homeless and volunteer alike.” Madelyn Trione, Class of 2010 In short, we are reminded of our shared humanity. Natalie Kidd remarked, “I smiled at one guy and he stopped, smiled and said ‘God Bless you.’ I felt like God was giving me a high five!” On December 3, 2008 approximately 100 students from Ursuline and Cardinal Newman traveled to San Francisco to serve at Project Homeless Connect (PHC). The students were accompanied by teacher and parent chaperones who kindly offered to drive and supervise; without their generosity, the experience would not have been possible. Project Homeless Connect is a bimonthly event wherein “volunteers work to connect the homeless with: Dental Services, DMV IDs, Eyeglasses, Family Services, Food, HIV testing, Housing Information, Hygiene Products, Medical Care, Mental Health Services, and much more” (www.projecthomelessconnect.com). Students spent the day escorting homeless people to the various services, serving lunch, assessing needs and interacting with clients. This was our fourth official field trip to PHC and each time, organizers of the event comment on how wonderful our students are with the clients. Their collective compassion is truly remarkable. The experience allows our students to engage in progressive, compassionate and effective community service while encouraging interaction between vastly different worlds. Ursuline and Cardinal Newman are notable for many reasons, but arguably our greatest Helping the homeless at Project Homeless strength is creating and Connect is a heartwarming experience which these Ursuline students display in their smiles. supporting a community where students can achieve athletically, academically and spiritually. Service is one aspect of their spiritual education and an area where we, as a community, continue to shine. A Sleeping Bag Drive Full of Heart by Jennifer Gray, Ursuline Yearbook Advisor and English Teacher The Project Homeless Connect trip to San Francisco was preceded by a Sleeping Bag Drive benefitting The Living Room (TLR), a drop-in center aiding Sonoma County homeless women and children. Faculty, staff, parents and students donated 81 new and gently used sleeping bags. After a mention in Chris Smith’s Press Democrat column, another 600 dollars in donations was received directly by TLR, thereby funding the purchase of an additional 30 brand new bags from the retailer, Big 5. By early December, all of the bags had been distributed to grateful clients, many of whom are sleeping in cars. Arlene Irizary, the program coordinator for TLR, expressed her appreciation, stating, “Thanks for the amazing ‘mountain’ of sleeping bags!” This project was an inaugural event and something we hope to continue for years to come. Warming up the donated sleeping bags soon to be used by others is Project Coordinator/Teacher Jennifer Gray and some of her students. 5 COMMUNITY SERVICE The Christmas Celebration of Giving by Lisa Ormond, Co-Director of Admissions During the days of Advent and in the genuine spirit of sharing with others, Ursuline students, parents, faculty and staff alike purchased gifts and gathered donations for those less fortunate in our Sonoma County community. The school-wide annual service program called Christmas Families is organized by Sister Francis Kearney who has coordinated this incredible undertaking for over 10 years. “This is a Christmas celebration of what life is about,” said Sister Francis. “It’s worth all the effort and it’s a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of the real world.” Sister Francis’ passion certainly provided the inspirational spirit for this year’s efforts and outcome. All Ursuline students, via their homerooms, participated in the annual service project. Sister Francis said the requests for help and assistance were significantly higher than in years past, probably due to today’s tough economic times. “The need was truly great,” she said. And the Ursuline community came together in many ways to provide for individuals and families. The “needs” were first identified by the following community members and organizations and then passed along to Sister Francis: The Family Support Center, The Living Room, Sunburst Projects, Sonoma Development Center, California Human Services and on-campus, Angela Center and employee Juan Cruz. Parents and students then rallied to fill the needs of those less fortunate. Freshman homeroom students and teachers Mrs. Kiebel and Mrs. Meyer proudly display the gifts they gathered for their Christmas families. Donating household items, food, gently used clothing, gift cards, and wrapped gifts for each child, the Ursuline community stepped forward and gave to others. Ursuline’s Junior Class collected clothing for the families as part of a school assignment called “Homeless Week.” Santa Rosa Boy Scout Troop 707 donated bags and bags of stuffed animals for the children. The St. Rose Preschool community also supported this annual service opportunity. 6 There’s so much joy when giving to others as demonstrated by Homeroom 9A students and Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Niendorf. Every year Christmas Families warms the hearts of those who participate, but this year’s project was unique in two ways. For the first time, our community served the needs of day laborers in Sonoma County, specifically 10 families. This request for assistance arrived quite late in the process but thanks to one Ursuline parent who mobilized other Ursuline parents, these families, too, had a joyous Christmas. Sister Francis said over 20 parents stepped in at the last minute to ensure that even this late request for need was fulfilled. Parent involvement and support was definitely greater than in years past. The Ursuline philosophy of Serviam, “I will serve,” certainly touched all those who helped with this program as well as those who received, and the essence of Christmas was truly experienced. COMMUNITY SERVICE Our Amazing Students—Allison Zegarra By Allison Zegarra, Class of 2009 A Passion for Peru— A Global Service Project As we left, each child hugged and thanked us for their unforgettable experience. Their genuine thanks and smiles were the best gift of the project. As we crossed the rickety bridge passing straw houses without electricity and headed down the dirt hill for the last time, I knew I would never be the same. Upon reflection, this project impacted me profoundly because I witnessed barriers of language, culture, and economic status melted away when we worked together building a stronger future for the children of Santa Clara, Peru. Three years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Peru and visit my father’s family. During my stay, I was struck by the inequality of daily life. Many children were visibly malnourished and lived in houses made of straw and mud without water and electricity. They did not attend school, were often barefoot and lacked warm clothing. My visit to Peru made me reflect on the quote, “children are our best resource and hope for the future,” by John F. Kennedy. This quote inspired me to take action. My journey to make a difference began in 2007 when Peru was devastated by a large earthquake. In response to the need, I conducted a two week coin drive at Ursuline. With the money raised, I helped build a preschool daycare in Pisco, the Proyecto Amistad Camp kids say their final goodbyes to area hardest hit by the Earthquake. I wanted to their new friend Allison. do more to increase resources for the children of Peru, so I choose to organize a nine day children’s camp for my Ursuline Senior Service project. The camp was called “Proyecto Amistad” or “Project Friendship.” The model and inspiration for the camp came from my participation in the “Ambassadors for Children” program sponsored by the Girl Scouts in 2007, in Pune, India. Fellow student Mia Lincoln joined me in my service project last spring. By summertime, we raised over $2,500 and collected 200 pounds of donated school supplies for the children and Proyecto Amistad. We traveled Allison creates rainbow art with Peruvian chilto Santa Clara, Peru last dren at the Proyecto Amistad Camp. summer and had an incredible experience doing the camp for 75 children ages 2-14. The most memorable experience of the project was on the last night, the mothers decorated our classroom which is perched on a hillside, for a surprise party. The children dressed in Peruvian costumes, created dances and songs to honor and thank us. In addition, the village prepared typical Peruvian dishes to show their appreciation. Editor’s Note: Allison’s service to the Peruvian children continues. She’s now raising funds for milk, vegetables, books, art supplies and is currently organizing a shoe drive and collecting new toothbrushes to be sent to Peru. She’s also submitting a proposal to Rotary International, asking for funds and manpower to build a bridge, provide a better source of clean water and funds to purchase large propane tanks for the soup kitchen in the village. Proyecto Amistad Camp children 7 Counseling The Value of Ursuline’s Counseling Program Guiding Our Students by Cyndi Niendorf, Director of College Counseling Personal Counseling helps to guide the individual through an ongoing development of the total person. Counselors provide the opportunity to bring about the ethical, emotional, social, and spiritual growth of the individual student. By Andriana Duckworth Class of 2009 During my high school years at Ursuline I have received the utmost concern and assistance from our counseling department. Beginning freshman year with the four-year planning process, my counselors helped me choose the core classes and activities that would meet my academic needs and help me realize my potential. This process continued during my junior year when I participated in the College Match Project. Through this project and with my counselor’s help, I had a better sense of how to choose and apply to colleges that would be a good fit for me both academically and socially. As a senior, I have received the most incredible and personalized counseling, helping me through the daunting college application process. My counselor gave me special tips and insight, guiding me through the college appointments. The counseling I have received at Ursuline has been immensely helpful. I am a successful and happy Ursuline student, and I know the confidence I’ve developed these past four years will serve me well in college and in the future. 8 Mrs. Niendorf and Senior Andriana Duckworth discuss her college choices. The Ursuline Counseling Department offers a wide variety of counseling and guidance services to assist our students with their growth and development from being adolescents to young adults. Personalized counseling from Four Year Planning to Pre College Planning is one of our great strengths. The Counseling Department provides academic, personal, and college counseling to all students. The department attempts to ensure that each student maximizes her potential so that she may be empowered with opportunities for the present and the future. To this end, the department works closely with students, parents, administrators, teachers, and other out-of-school professionals. Academic Counseling is directed towards assisting students in formulating programs of studies which ensure intellectual development, personal satisfaction, and completion of college admission requirements. This begins in November of freshmen year when we meet with each student and her parents to develop an individualized Four Year Plan. College Counseling occurs at every level but primarily during the junior and senior years. The junior and senior counselors in collaboration with the Director of College Counseling are responsible for the college counseling. Second semester juniors complete the College Match Project which helps each student self discover her admissions profile in relation to characteristics of colleges that are important to her. Our personal Pre-College Planning appointments with each junior and her parents help both set realistic goals regarding collegiate studies. We guide students in researching “good fit” colleges, provide students and parents with the necessary information about test requirements, college admissions, and financial aid information. We have time to individually assist students with their on-line college applications. Our English teachers are a great resource for the college essays. Our graduates are proof of the benefits of our small student to counselor ratio and the self confidence and maturity they gain through four years at Ursuline. We had 72 graduates in the Class of 2008 and last fall, they entered 38 different institutions of higher learning. Many are attending universities where they are the only one from their class. Choosing a school that is a good match is the most important factor for success and happiness in college. Academic Excellence Eleven Ursuline students have been named AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of exceptional achievement on the college-level AP Exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based exam results. Kathryn Griffith, Katilyn LeBaudour, and Andrea Scharfen (Class of 2008) qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Skye Emerson, Anne Immordino, Lauren Morehouse, and Courtney Sibert (Class of 2008) qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of a least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Alexandra Holmes, Hannah Nead, Lauren Shureen (Class of 2008) and Amelia Lincoln (current senior) qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing 3 or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. The Alumnae of the Year Award is presented to an inspiring alumna who has committed much of her time, energy and talent to living the Ursuline values. During the Alumnae Sunday event on October 19, 2008, the Alumnae Association bestowed this award to Nancy Moran. In her many years of dedicated Nancy Moran, 2008 Alum of the Year. service to Ursuline, Nancy has not only been the President of the Alumnae Association and an active Ursuline Board of Trustee member for 14 years (serving many of those years as Board President), but she also has tirelessly assisted in many other capacities when needed and asked. Some of the other ways Nancy has served our community have included: labor negotiator for Ursuline faculty, Capital Campaign committee member, and Cardinal Newman/Ursuline Foundation committee member. She adds an element of intelligence, professionalism and style to everything she does. Listening to Nancy talk about her career of teaching in Germany, teaching and being an administrator at Piner-Oliver School District, educational consulting and her involvement with international studies and cross cultural education, it is very apparent that she possesses a true love for education. Although Nancy somehow finds the time to volunteer at Children’s Village and serve on the executive boards of two charter schools as well as travel and play golf, she says what she enjoys most is being with her two sons and their families. Thank you Nancy for all your contributions to Ursuline High School and its community. We are a better place because of you! Got Polenta? Ursuline Does! By Kathleen Kelly, Co-Director of Admissions Polenta is the ultimate Italian comfort food, and Ray Lazzini’s incredibly tasty and much sought after stew nearly created a stampede as attendees lined up to purchase leftover polenta and stew at the 20th Annual Polenta Dinner. Sponsored by the Ursuline Alumnae Association, this annual event was held in Ursuline’s Gym on Saturday, November 1st. Over 420 hungry attendees were treated to Chef Lazzini’s polenta and stew and all of the fixings. Many Ursuline students volunteered to serve the hungry patrons. Polenta proceeds go to the Alumnae Scholarship Fund. The evening served a special reminder that we are part of a blessed, generous and loving community of alumnae, parents, and friends united by Ursuline’s wonderful mission and traditions. 14 Polenta Chef Ray Lazzini and his loyal crew prepare to feed the hungry attendees. The alumnae team always appreciates faithful fan Jim Campagna’s presence at these games. Jim has attended the games since their inception seven years ago. President/Principal Julie Carver ’88 also attended. Coach Jeff Ursuline basketball players continue their friendly rivalry. As the game progressed, the younger alums took the lead with enough energy to close the gap in the final minutes. Seventy-five enthusiastic spectators cheered and supported the players, including Monica Mertle ’03 who vowed to play next year. August Soccer Showdown Alumnae vs. Ursuline’s Varsity Soccer The alum team put up a valiant fight on a hot summer Saturday afternoon, but couldn’t quite beat Ursuline’s excellent Varsity soccer team. The final score was 6-3. President/ Principal Julie Carver watched the friendly, fun competition at the Cardinal Newman field as did parents and friends. The alums are looking forward to a rematch next summer, and to the opportunity to again reconnect with classmates and friends all in the name of soccer. Ursuline soccer players and alumnae enjoy a soccer-filled day together. Welcome New UHS Faculty Alissa Coenen, Spanish Before coming to Ursuline, I taught Spanish and Spanish for Native Speakers for five years at Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma. I’ve also taught Spanish at St. Bernard High School in Eureka and ESL in Spain, Mexico, and at Brandon College in San Francisco. I earned a BA in Spanish and English at Humboldt State University and a California teaching credential at Chapman University. The best part of my education has been traveling and living in a variety of interesting places. I consider myself someone who can be dropped in the middle of anywhere and turn the experience into a fortuitous adventure. These days, most of my free time is spent with my husband and our two children, having adventures at home or, preferably, in nature. I love growing food, cooking for large groups of friends, hiking, swimming, baking, painting, and dancing, but not all at the same time. Patricia Rota, Spanish I have taught Spanish for 20 years in many different schools, both here and in Florida. After having my two daughters, I returned to the University of Central Florida to get a teaching degree in elementary education, Spanish and ESL. I returned to my home state of California where I headed the bilingual department at Altimura Middle School in Sonoma for two years. After that I worked at Cardinal Newman as a Spanish teacher for seven years. This is where I was allowed to really grow as a teacher and as a person, and where I found my true calling as a teacher in Catholic high schools. In this environment, I found I could appeal to the spirit of the student as well as their intellect, and this is exactly what has continued to motivate me to teach. After leaving Newman, I spent seven more years in Florida becoming a grandmother and teaching in various schools. And now, here I am “home again” at Ursuline in an environment where I love teaching girls. What a blessing! 15 Admissions Admissions Calendar New Faces and New Directions for Recruitment Lisa Ormond, Co-Director of Admissions January 13 Parent Visitation Day 26 Student Shadow Day even worked for KFTY-TV 50 as the assignment editor and was a production assistant for ABC Sports during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The Admissions team of Kathleen Kelly and Lisa Ormond are eagerly and excitedly wrapping their arms around student recruiting, marketing, and admissions to take Ursuline High School into the 21st Century. Kathleen is a welcomed, familiar face to the Ursuline community having served as Ursuline’s Alumnae Relations Manager the past two years. Her professional background includes positions with Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies for seven years, Nietech/COMMUNITYsmart for three years, and she also worked as United Way’s Development Director. Kathleen has been a Sonoma County resident for over 20 years and is the proud parent of four children. Her daughter Angeline is currently a sophomore at Ursuline and daughter Laura graduated in 2006. Parents and students can tour our picturesque campus. Ursuline teachers highlight academic programs and answer questions. Tour and teacher information sessions are about 1 ½ hours in length and are scheduled from 3:00 p.m – 4:30 p.m. Lisa comes to Ursuline via the Santa Rosa Junior College where she was the Career Technical Education Marketing Coordinator for three years. Lisa’s professional background includes 17 years of employment at State Farm Insurance and a year at the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce. She Campus Tour Survey says… Take a tour of our campus and talk to faculty and staff. Reservations required. Tours take approximately 45 minutes. Kathleen and Lisa are working hard to strengthen relationships with area Catholic schools and to foster new ones with the public charter schools. The Admissions team is busily creating new plans and initiatives to market the school and to increase and diversify its visibility among key community segments such as businesses, nonprofits, and the Latino population. Full of ideas and fortitude, the Admissions Office is rethinking the way we recruit students taking into consideration the economic times and the increasing competition faced in today’s market. Realizing student recruitment is a year-round opportunity, Admissions hopes to better leverage the “sales” force we currently have: Ursuline parents, staff, faculty, and our own students. Surveys tell us that prospective Ursuline students and families come to us most often because of an Ursuline relationship. In other words, you (alums, parents, faculty, etc.) are telling others about the excellence of what we offer. Thank you—let’s continue talking about Ursuline! It’s the best marketing money can buy and ultimately, helps the school. Personal relationships are the foundation of marketing success. The Admissions Department is ready and willing to lead Ursuline in new directions. As always, we are open to conversation and ideas, so please stop by or call our department if you have information you’d like to share. We truly value our Ursuline community and the power it has to persuade and promote. Father-Daughter Dance By Andriana Duckworth, Class of 2009 The FatherDaughter Dance, a very special event for Ursuline students, offers an opportunity Marty Reilley and daughter Kelsey to strengthen dance the night away. the bonds of love between father and daughter. This year’s dance was held on Friday, November 21, at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek. Great music, wonderful food and the special bond between fathers and daughters made the evening memorable. Here’s what some of the girls had to say about this special evening. “Being able to spend time with my Dad was really nice.” “It was fun to get dressed up and share a special evening with my Dad and good friends.” “I had so much fun with my Dad and created memories that I will never forget.” “Father-Daughter was one of my favorite memories at Ursuline. I got to spend a great night with my Dad as we took pictures, ate, and danced. I’ll never forget this dance!” Junior Ring Ceremony By Kaitlin Daniels, Allison Harf, Gienna Gonnella, and Lauren Gibson, Class of 2010 The Junior Ring Ceremony is a symbol of unity and friendship with the entire Ursuline community. Homecoming Rocked 2008 By Alissa Geving Class of 2009 The 2009 Homecoming Queen and her Court (left to right) Mariah Longo, Stephanie Chaw, Homecoming Queen Natalie Netter, Alyssa Ramazotti, Mia Lincoln, and Jane Reilley. Spirit, School Pride, Enthusiasm: These are all words to describe Ursuline & Cardinal Newman’s Homecoming 2008. Homecoming is the time when our school really comes together and celebrates the beginning of the new school year. What’s not to like? The Spirit Rally, our first activity on Friday morning, was by far one of my favorites in the four years I’ve been a student. Later that evening came the football game, CN vs. Piner and finally, our Homecoming Dance the following night. I loved the Vegas, Baby theme and the decorations were awesome! Serving on ASB (Associated Student Body) and taking all the extra time to set up really helped me appreciate the win at the game that night. The performers really made the dance fun and unique! As is custom at Ursuline and Cardinal Newman High Schools, the annual Service Fair was held early fall in the Ursuline gym. Throughout the day, religion teachers take their classes to the fair so they can investigate the dozens of booths representing community organizations in need of volunteer service. This year, these organizations included Canine Companions, Bob Burke’s Kids, Renaissance Healing and Learning Center, Juvenile Court, Hospice, and many more (40 in all). At Ursuline, all students are required to volunteer 25 hours of community service each year, and the Service Fair offers an opportunity to connect with and learn more about service-based organizations. In preparation for next year’s endeavors, juniors also take this opportunity to interview seniors about their CBSL projects. The Service Fair is a valuable experience for students to learn how they can best serve their community in unique, much-needed ways. 18 Jog-a-thon By Lauren Gibson, Amanda Pratt, Allison Harf, and Gianna Gonnella, Class of 2010 We love the Jog-a-thon! Leadership Conference by Madelyne Trione, Kaitlin Daniels, Allison Harf, Natalie Netter and everyone from our Ursuline Leadership Team Every summer in early June, it is a tradition for representatives from each of the fourteen Ursuline schools in the Ursuline students-sisters from all over the U.S. take a moment to refuel United States to for more fun. come together for a leadership conference. We, Ursuline High School of Santa Rosa, California (the farthest school West), were given the honor of hosting this summer’s 2008 conference. Approximately two girls and a faculty supervisor from thirteen of the fourteen Ursuline schools visited our campus. All of us stayed in the dorms of the Angela building. We had an incredible time over the four days, making new friends with girls from all across the country – states including Louisiana, Ohio, New York, Kentucky, and Texas. Between field trips to San Francisco, In n Out Burger (a highlight), Doran Beach, Four Winds ropes course in Sebastopol and the Union Hotel, all the Ursuline sisters from coast to coast enjoyed talking and learning about our different school traditions. We discovered one school whose Junior girls roller-skate down a hill to their Ring Ceremony; another school has a formal Senior Tea for girls and moms. All in all, it was awesome to connect with Ursuline girls from the different areas of the U.S. This experience strengthened our community and built stronger, individual leadership skills. Ursuline Students Across the World By Cyndi Niendorf, Director of College Counseling Following their adventurous, independent spirits and the desire to spend a year abroad during high school, dreams came true for Erinn and Raquel. Erinn is in Italy through AFS and Raquel is in France through the Rotary International Exchange Program. Both students return to the U.S. in July and will finish their senior year at Ursuline next year, graduating with their fellow classmates in 2010. On the next page are short updates from the girls about their life in another country. A Student’s Perspective From Erinn in Corigliano D’Otranto, Italy Hello from Italy. I am living with a host family very different from my family in California. It is an incredible experience to have three host siblings who are all younger than me. At first I was worried because I am an only child and have not had to deal with sibling relationships. I soon realized that my fears were Erinn (left) and Raquel (right) share groundless. I get along with them all a moment together during their time back in the states during the incredibly well, and they often make me Christmas holiday. laugh. My host family is amazing. They are very active; there’s never a dull moment. I am so grateful to them for sharing their home. I’m sure I will have many other experiences while I am here, but this family will stay with me forever. School is six days a week and very academic. They do not have school activities or school sports. Many teens join outside clubs for sports. I swim regularly at a local pool. Teen life here seems a little more laid-back. Because everything seems so much closer together, it is very easy to travel. It feels very safe to me. I’m enjoying my stay in Italy and hope other students will consider studying abroad! From Raquel in Crotenay, France There’s been lots of small challenges, like getting used to the temperature being anywhere between -10 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit when I step outside, or remembering to give people the two little kisses on the cheek when you first see them and before you leave, although now that’s a habit and I don’t forget. The hardest challenge is just being patient with the language. I knew the very basics when I arrived, but now my French is so much better. I can communicate, hold conversations, joke a bit, and now I’m even starting to use slang. When I arrived, my French was really horrible. I couldn’t join in when people would talk because I had no idea what they were saying. I have had so many incredible experiences. Where I live is beautiful. I’ve made lots of new friends, and some I know will be my friends for life. I’m learning about a different culture, a new way of looking at life. The other Rotary exchange students are amazing. And above all, I’m learning a new language, my third. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything! Our Amazing Students—Senior Mia Lincoln By Carol August, Director of Counseling Every now and then, we are lucky enough to know a truly remarkable person. This is someone who gives of herself, is very bright, is a gifted athlete, displays strong leadership qualities, has a loving and warm heart, and is always unassuming and humble. That person is Amelia Lincoln. She is one of the top students in her class and has been a President’s Scholar all four years. She was awarded 2nd Team Honors by The North Bay League in soccer this past fall season and earned Scholar Athlete Mia standing next to the reflection pool status. Her leadership with the Washington Monument in the activities include serving in background. class offices as President, Vice-president, and spirit leader. This year she is a Spirit Leader in ASB. This past year, Mia was nominated as Ursuline’s delegate to Girls State, sponsored by American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Out of 500 participants, she was one of two students elected to represent California to Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. this past summer. She became Senator Lincoln! Don’t be surprised to see that title, or one of higher status attached to her name in After singing at the Pearl Harbor a few years. Only 96 students Memorial, Girls Nation senators from across the country earned enjoyed their time around the fountain. the right to attend Girls Nation. After a whirlwind of Washington activities, including meeting President Bush and many U.S. Congress Representatives, Girls Nation Senate got under way. Mia was elected as Nationalist Party Campaign Chair, appointed Secretary of Homeland Security, and successful in getting her minority party ticket elected (President and Vice-President). And ultimately, she was awarded Girls Nation Most Outstanding Senator, 2008. Wow—this is OUR Ursuline girl! This past summer Mia also traveled to Lima, Peru for her service project which involved helping run a day camp for children. Obviously, we all are proud of Mia, of her personal accomplishments and growth. But simply, it has been Ursuline’s pleasure to have experienced Mia. 19 The Ursuline Chapel Shining Its Beauty and Reverence Brightly By Lisa Ormond, Co-Director of Admissions As part of a year long Campus Ministry across the curriculum project, the Ursuline Chapel and altar were transformed into the site of breathtaking Day of the Dead and Christmas Nativity displays. Organized by Campus Ministry Coordinator Kathy Snodgrass, these two important ceremonial Chapel displays were a sight to behold, full of elegance and wonder. Day of the Dead At the end of October and in the beginning of November, the Chapel exhibited a Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos display complete with student painted paper mache skulls and wooden skeletons and student, faculty and staff pictures and keepsake momentos of loved ones passed. Ursuline’s Campus Ministry, Art, Religion, and Spanish departments worked together to create the moving exhibit. Ursuline’s librarian Mary Hart prepared a special Ursuline’s Chapel Alter adorned for El Dia de Chapel display in honor of Ursuline alumnae. Also, Ursuline art students helped the Sonoma County Museum host a community Day of the Dead mask painting workshop. During December, Ursuline celebrated and honored the birth of Christ and the glorious season of Advent. Displaying nativities, angels and other sacred Christmas treasures contributed by students, staff and faculty, the Chapel and its altar were truly magnificent. Many parents, students, and school visitors stopped to view the incredibly beautifully adorned Chapel. It was awe inspiring! “This homage was a powerful and moving cultural experience and a wonderful way to connect more deeply with one another.” Kathy Snodgrass—speaking about the Day of the Dead Chapel display. ___________________________________________________________ Ursuline Chapel Altar during Advent 2008 Megan McKellar, Marisa Wohlschlaeger, and Allyson Beach help out at the Sonoma County Museum Day of the Dead workshop. 20 These two Chapel displays reminded the entire Ursuline community of the sacredness of these seasons and provided a way to honor them daily by way of the Ursuline Chapel. Ursuline Fall Sports Ursuline Fall Sports By Dan Knight, Athletic Director Cross Country Coach Pat LaFortune’s Cross Country team “ran into” another successful season this fall. Our longtime NCS Honor Coach had a very young group of 17 to train so some extra work in the preseason was necessary. Early in the season, the girls needed traveling shoes to go along with their running shoes for some of the meets. They spent much of September and early October running all over the Bay Area – from Hayward to Half Moon Bay to right next door at Spring Lake. All that training paid off as it led the girls to a strong North Bay League record of 4-3. Hopefully, this will pay off in Ursuline being a top team in the long distance events for the Track season this spring. Best wishes to our two departing seniors, Connie Noonan and Alizah Rotman. Golf Long drives, finding the fairway, staying out of the bunkers, and always making your tap-ins – wouldn’t we all like to achieve these fundamentals when we’re on the course? Well, Coach Mike Jonas had our girls working hard on those skills as it was another playoff year for the Bears! Our girls finished tied for 2nd in the North Bay League with an 11-3 record which placed them in the North Coast Section, North Regional Qualifier. GinaLisa Tamayo also moved into the post season as she qualified from the Regional into the next round of the Tournament. Great job GinaLisa! Soccer This year we saw two successful seasons from two dynamic teams. Both the Varsity and JV Soccer teams finished with winning records: Varsity 11-7, JV 10-4-1. The young and talented JV team started the season with some strong performances showing glimpses of their potential. Coach John Lawson combined that potential with talent as the girls finished their season on a four game win streak. The Varsity team finished tied for 3rd in the NBL. The girls moved into the NCS playoffs with a bye in the 1st Round leading into a match up with rival Maria Carrillo. A great performance in monsoon-type weather resulted in a 2-1 victory. Although the season ended in the semi-finals, Coach John Gilson and the girls were very proud of their accomplishments and were especially proud of Empire Player of the Year – Senior Christina Tognetti! Tennis A 3rd place NBL finish with a practically new team showed that this was another successful year for Coach Nan Hall and her 14 girls. The girls finished with a 10-4 league record and throughout the season showed great depth up and down the entire ladder. That’s a clear example of how hard the girls challenged each other every day on those “top-ranked” Cardinal Newman tennis Photo by Dirk Bietau—www.dirk.com. courts. Let’s also congratulate our Ace Junior Gienna Gonnella for another All-League season. Great job by Gienna for showing versatility in her game and pairing up with Junior, Marjorie Broffman and taking 3rd place in the NBL Doubles Tournament. Volleyball This fall, Thursday nights in the Ursuline Gym, watching the Bears JV and Varsity Volleyball teams, was a great place to be. By finishing with an overall record of 21–6, the JV team had a season that any Bay Area team at a similar level would be envious of. Wow! The very tough NBL continued this season and our young Varsity was right there with the rest finishing league with a solid 7-7 league record including a 2nd half victory over powerhouse Montgomery. The future is shining bright for our girls. Our coaches Bruce and Nancy Le did a superb job this season! Water Polo Photo by Dirk Bietau—www.dirk.com. Once again the 5:30 a.m. practices didn’t shield the popularity of the Water Polo program started by Coach Mark Hartman as 24 girls came out for the Varsity and Frosh/ Soph teams. It was a rebuilding season for the girls as two graduates are playing in college this year. Coach Hartman developed the Varsity team to a strong 3rd place finish in the Redwood Empire League. The Frosh/ Soph team was able to participate in three tournaments this season which should help the development for next year’s potential league favorite. 21 Ursuline Fall Sports Ursuline & Cardinal Newman 2008-09 Cross Country Connie Noonan* Alizah Rotman Jacqueline Balletto* Jessica Blinman Jackie Conroy Chelsea Goldschmidt* Megan McKellar* Michelle Stone* Madelyne Trione* Elizabeth Buckley Erin Clark* Nora Peterson* Greta Sweet Tricia Baluyut* Julia McKellar* Nicolette Molina* Emily Vassallo* Head Coach: Asst. There are no limits to what we can imagine…world peace, a perfect car, a beautiful building or a clay pot. Every art student has a sketchbook or idea book and they learn that little drawings can become (from left to right) Elisa Vargas, Sydney Youngblood, amazing works of art Jeanette Butler, Veronica Morales, Nicole Castro, Carley or problem solving Rafanelli, and Mrs. Bryant at the entrance of the designs. Martin Puryear exhibit in San Francisco. The Studio Art class is the foundation art course at Ursuline. It includes students at all levels of experience and interest in the arts. The design class covers the elements and principals of art with an emphasis on the way art is applied to the world, covering graphic design, fashion and industrial design and architecture. The fall semester in Design culminated with a fashion show final. After the students drew and researched, they worked in groups to create a vintage line of clothes, modeled, wrote a script, selected music and put on a show. Students in the drawing class used large newsprint pads to draw a variety of shapes from cardboard boxes to match faces of fellow students. Advanced Placement Studio Art students expanded on their work with the addition of digital mixed media such as self-portraits at age 80. This year, our new textbooks have expanded exposure to the Visual Arts. The art classes continue as a venue to physically make paintings, drawings, and sculptures but the textbooks are an additional resource for those students who learn best by reading. The new books are ArtTalk by Rosalind Ragans, Drawing Structure and Vision by Drury and Stryker, Launching the Imagination by Mary Stewart and Color by Betty Edwards. These books enrich the learning experience. Chelsea Booth Our field trips continue to delight and expose our students to works of art. The trips include the di Rosa Preserve in Napa, Yves St. Laurent at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and Martin Puryear and William Kentridge exhibits at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Our Amazing Students—Angelina Duckett By Judi Greaney, CBSL Coordinator Spending the past three summers as an apprentice mosaic artist with the City of Santa Rosa’s ArtStart program has allowed Angelina Duckett to contribute to her community by working on public art. “Working with ArtStart on the The Poppy Wall mural and The Rainbow Trout sculpture at Prince Memorial Greenway Park has been an amazing experience for me personally,” said Angelina. “I was surrounded by 30 of the most talented teen artists in Santa Rosa, many of them with the desire and ability of becoming professional artists. What I discovered was that many other schools don’t have a great art department like Ursuline’s, and a venue did not exist in Sonoma County for students to show their work. I wanted to provide recogniAngelina welcomes guests to the opening reception of The ARTery Gallery on November 22, 2008. 24 tion and some opportunities for my peers so for my Senior Community Service Project, I took on the task of organizing a gallery to showcase their art.” Angelina established a gallery for teens located at 461 Sebastopol Avenue in Santa Rosa and has enjoyed the process of building the ARTery. “This has been like trying to start a small business. The opening reception was incredible! We had over 400 people come through and all complimented the ‘teen gallery’ as being one of the best they had seen,” said Angelina. But it has been the appreciation of her ArtStart peers, whose opportunities increase as their work hangs on these walls, that has made it all worthwhile. “Who knows…maybe one day I may see their work in a major gallery and I can say I helped someone’s dream come true.” Angelina has applied for public grants and private funding for the ARTery in hopes that it will continue indefinitely. “I encourage any student with an interest in art to apply for ArtStart and to consider taking over as the ARTery coordinator for your Senior Service Project. I hope that other Ursuline students will enjoy the opportunity to promote the arts in our community as I have.”To learn more about the ARTery, visit the gallery’s website at http://www.artstart.us/theartery.htm. Ursuline Visual and Performing Arts Fall Drama—Charley’s Aunt Splendid, Side-Splitting Production For two weekends in November, laughter filled the Ursuline Student Center as the Ursuline and Cardinal Newman High School players presented Charley’s Aunt, the Victorian farce by Brandon Thomas. This comedy certainly had the audiences smiling. The cast of student actors, directed by Lee Anne Wentz, couldn’t have carried off this classic farce with any more poise than they did. We tip our hats to Mrs. Wentz, the hardworking and supportive parent volunteers, the community sponsors, and the phenomenal cast including Ursuline students: *Lindsay Ferrigno, *Alyssa Ramazzotti, *Tina Beigelbeck, Haley Wild-Sichi and *Kelsey Reilley. * Designates Scholar Performing Arts student, qualifying with a 3.5 or higher GPA during the season of the production preparation. Choir—Winter Performance Lovely Music for All Ursuline’s Christmas Choir concert provided Ursuline families and the community beautiful harmony and song in Brescia Hall on December 10th. We thank choir director/faculty member Bethany Neese and her incredible group of student vocalists for the holiday performance that was a treat for all who attended. This year the Dance Department’s performance of “The Nut,” a modern interpretation of the classic “Nutcracker,” was an exciting experience for all involved. As a teacher’s assistant for Dance I witnessed the hard work that was put into the production. From elaborate neon costumes, representing the dolls, to matching pajamas and pillows for Clara’s dream, costuming was a major part in making “The Nut” come to life. In addition, contemporary music artists like Jack Johnson and Devo complemented the classical pieces that traditionally appear in the “Nutcracker.” Ursuline’s Choir Save the Date Lots Happening! March 9-20, 4:00-6:00 pm “Imagine That!” art exhibit. Student Art Reception on March 19 in Brescia Hall. April 24, 7:00 pm “So Show Me” Ursuline and Cardinal Newman colllaborative talent show at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. March 26-28 & April 2-4, 7:30 pm The Ursuline and Cardinal Newman Players will turn the theatrical world upside down in the upcoming spring musical in the Ursuline Gym. Stay tuned for more! April 30, 7:30 pm Ursuline’s Performing Arts Department will wow audiences with its Spring Performing Arts Show at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. An evening of dance, choir, guitar and visual arts will await audiences. The teachers and many parent volunteers transformed the Ursuline gym into a magical winterland. Corey Lott and Gabrielle Thompson along with all three periods of Dance classes worked to create a modern interpretation of a classical performance and in the process perhaps created a new Ursuline masterpiece. 25 Annual Report Fiscal years July 1 to June 30 Enrollment (number of students) 2003-04 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 368 361 332 347 320 Five year totals Operating revenues Tuition and fees Less tuition assistance Other net financial income 3,237,000 3,439,000 3,299,000 3,768,000 3,564,000 17,307,000 (258,000) (248,000) (206,000) (230,000) (255,000) (1,197,000) 82,000 64,000 150,000 205,000 (2,000) 499,000 3,061,000 3,255,000 3,243,000 3,743,000 3,307,000 16,609,000 (3,044,000) (3,017,000) (2,763,000) (3,147,000) (3,195,000) (15,166,000) (618,000) (963,000) (754,000) (849,000) (1,018,000) (4,202,000) (3,662,000) (3,980,000) (3,517,000) (3,996,000) (4,213,000) (19,369,000) Operating expenses Salaries & benefits General & facilities overhead Fundraising Events Contributions Contributions & net receipts from events AMJHN Foundation (change in beneficial interest) Additions to (withdrawls from) Net Assets 84 179 247 275 268 268 461 255 523 365 222 222 545,000 433,000 770,000 640,000 489,000 2,877,000 - 775,000 444,000 928,000 91,000 2,238,000 545,000 1,208,000 1,214,000 1,568,000 580,000 5,115,000 (56,000) 483,000 940,000 1,315,000 (326,000) 2,355,000 This year for the first time we are showing five years of financial information to provide perspective on our reduction in net assets of $326,000 in 2007-08 and to show the cumulative net increase in our Net Assets through this period - a total growth of $2,355,000. As our school, and our Ursuline families, are now navigating significant local and national economic challenges we are grateful that our school is not burdened by any debt and that our grounds and buildings are made available for our use at no cost by the Ursuline Sisters. Our current enrollment realities have required streamlining our operating costs. 26 In 2008-09 we have increased tuition assistance provided to our students to over $300,000. We very much appreciate the additional support provided by the Angela Merici John Henry Newman Foundation in developing our school’s endowment base, so that we can provide more tuition assistance in the coming years. This year we engaged new auditors, Lautze and Lautze, and are pleased with their knowledge of private schools. We received a clean audit and our Audit & Finance Committee welcomed the detailed recommendations included in their Management Letter. The complete audited statements can be found in the Governance section under ABOUT URSULINE on our website at www.ursulinehs.org.
