A
week ago the Syracuse University football
team got rolled by Pittsburgh’s pro-style
approach to football. This week it will
face all the rage in college football in
West Virginia’s spread no-huddle offense and odd 33-5 stack defense.
It will require a marked adjustment, especially
when the Orange has the ball.
“Not as much on the defensive side because we
have seen those types of formations,” SU head coach
Doug Marrone said. “Offensively it is more of an
issue. ... They are extremely fast and extremely talented. They know exactly what they are doing. They
have fine coaches on the defensive staff. And we are
going to have to execute our game plan. That will be
a great challenge for us.”
One of many this week for the Orange (4-2, 1-1
Big East), which will face the Mountaineers (5-1, 10) at noon Saturday (ESPN2) in Morgantown. Among
them:
• The Mountaineers had five players named to the
All-Big East first team last season, and all five are
back. Overall, they are the most experienced team SU will face in conference
all season. …

STATISTICS
HOWTHEY
STACKUP
Quarterbacks
WVU’s Geno Smith (68.4 completion
percentage, 14 TDs, 2 INTs) has been
more efficient than SU’s Ryan Nassib
(56.6, 11/4).
SU
WVU
Running backs
WVU star Noel Devine (504 yards, 4.9
ypc) has been slowed by a foot injury.
SU’s duo of Delone Carter (5.0) and
Antwon Bailey (5.5) is potent.
SU
WVU
Receivers
SU cannot match the speed of Jock
Sanders and Tavon Austin, who can
catch and run a long way. SU’s Van Chew
(28 catches, 16.1 ypr) is a good one.
Maps
SU
WVU
Offensive line
WVU’s veteran unit has paved the way
for 376.3 yards of balanced offense
(227.3 passing, 149 rushing). SU’s front is
getting better but is not there yet.
SU
WVU
Defensive line
All three down linemen for WVU are
outstanding. Team has 18 sacks and
allows only 83 rushing yards per game.
SU’s front, led by Chandler Jones, is fine.
Satellite
SU
WVU
Linebackers
Each team boasts a unit that features
accomplished, productive players. Hard
to give an edge, because in WVU’s 3-3-5
stack the LB/S positions are muddied.

WVU’s safeties — or are they really
linebackers? — are huge. Led by
Keith Tandy (4), WVU has 8 INTs. SU’s
secondary is coming off a poor showing.
SU
WVU
Special teams
WVU has had two field-goal tries
blocked and has allowed a punt return
for a TD. SU’s special teams overall has
been up and down.
