REPORT

W e have purchased 400 feet new hose this year,
making us sufficient amount of good hose for this yearI would recommend buying a new or second hand hose
wagon for No. 1 company having the whole of the
weight on four wheels instead of the one we have at
present. There are in this state three or four dandv
one-horse hose carts t h a t have been discarded for motor
ized apparatus t h a t can be bought very reasonably, and
would haul much easier than our present dump cart
pattern. A chemical fire engine on standard Ford
chassis would be a great piece of apparatus and the
time will come soon when it would save a set of buildings. Get the firemen to the fire in time and they will
save your house, but you have got to give them a
fighting chance.
Our L. L. Mason Relief Association fund now
amounts to 857.06. I for one wish our assistant engineer, Guy I. Swett, whom we love so well, had the
whole of the fund if it would give him any comfort t h a t
he does not get.
Wars come and go—God knows we wish go. The
enlistment of fire fighters will never end, therefore it is
our duty to study the situation and bring about the
best result for fighting fires. Seventy-five per cent, of
our fires are preventable by carefulness. Don't allow
your paper hanger to paper over a flue hole, stop, it's
dangerous. Don't put wood ashes in a wooden receptacle. Fire prevention should be taught in our schools,
we would have less losses.
I wish to thank every member of our fire department for their kindness to me during my past eighteenth
year with you.
Sincerely your friend,
C H A R L E S W. BOWKER.

REPORT
Report of Water Commission.
To the Citizens of South Paris Village Corporation :
The past year has been one of more expense to do
the same work, while brass goods have more than
doubled. Our net earning- of the water system is not
as much as last y e a r ; the superintendent shows you the
reason why. The receipts from t h e Grand Trunk Railway were $465.86 less than last year, and from one of
our local water companies $110 less. We can see why
the receipts were not up to last year. The commission's
idea is not to stop for expense when the purity of the
water can be improved for drinking* purposes.
Your commission is unanimous in recommending
t h a t the Corporation now adopt a fixed policy of taking
up at least $1,000 of the water bonds each year. This
needs no argument, b u t it is well to bear in mind that
we ought to be reducing the debt and making preparations to replace some of the old Norway W a t e r Company
pipe before it becomes worn out.
We have instructed the Treasurer to call $2,000.00
of the bonds on April 1st next in accordance with vote
of last corporation meeting.
Your Commission was instructed to examine and
report concerning the purchase of some of the smaller
and private water companies now doing business in the
village. W e have made some examination of the situation and are convinced t h a t any further examination of
the question would involve an examination of the companies themselves, and a t some expense. W e therefore
recommend that any company desiring to sell its plant
to the Village Corporation shall be directed to present
its figures to the officers of the Corporation within three
months from the date of the annual meeting of t h e Corporation, and t h a t the officers shall thereupon, within

Owing to the lateness of the season when the

material, we have not yet completed it. W e did not
believe it best to p u t in the runways until the ground
