Happy 2017! We’re welcoming in the new year with a lineup that is bursting
with premieres, original productions, and compelling storytelling from
WGBH’s signature programs.
For our legions of British drama fans, we present the quintessential
Masterpiece—Victoria—a gripping historical pageant that portrays the epic
story of Queen Victoria of England, lushly presented in seven episodes beginning January 15.
“Victoria’s story is every teenage girl’s dream, and her mother’s nightmare.
At 18, and rather unexpectedly, she becomes a queen,” says Masterpiece
Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton. “This is a rich and vibrant drama that
tells the story of how this small young woman, brilliantly played by Jenna
Coleman, begins her journey to become the most powerful woman in the
world. She struggles for power, makes mistakes, falls in love with the wrong
man, and eventually meets the love of her life,
Prince Albert.” Adds Rebecca, “This Victoria is hardly
the short, round older woman we are familiar
with!”
The history, drama and robust storytelling
continue with three major new documentaries
from our producers at American Experience. The
first, Command and Control (Jan 10), is a chilling,
minute-by-minute account of the long-hidden
story of one of America’s most dangerous nuclear
accidents. Next, Rachel Carson (Jan 24) illuminates
both the public and private life of the woman who
launched the modern environmental movement
and revolutionized how we understand our relationship with the natural world.
The month culminates with the third, a distinctly Boston story, The Race Underground (Jan 31),
which chronicles the monumental challenge to
replace horse-pulled carriages with a faster, cleaner, safer form of transportation. It was Boston that overcame a litany of engineering challenges and the
great fears of local residents to construct America’s first subway.
“Today we step onto a subway car and travel underground and don’t
think twice about it,” says American Experience Executive Producer Mark
Samels. “It’s fascinating to see how the concept of the subway—a seemingly
impossible invention that once struck terror in the heart of the public—so
quickly became an everyday part of life for American commuters.”
History as drama, documentary storytelling that illuminates our present
through our past, these are the extraordinary WGBH productions that you
make possible with your generous support. We look forward to bringing you
more of them throughout 2017.

That’s Wild
Wild Kratts embarks on exciting new worldwide adventures starting January 16. The real-life zoologist brothers
Chris and Martin Kratt open each episode with a live-action segment that soon transforms into animation,
where their imaginations can run wild! They track down an invasion of snowy owls in North America, swim
with the narwhals in the Arctic Ocean, befriend a particular puffin in the Caribbean Sea, and even get a species
of praying mantis named after them in the jungle! Along the way, they learn about migration, the difference
between horns, antlers and tusks, adaptation, and taxonomy. Wonder what that means? Watch Wild Kratts and
the world of wildlife will wow you!

9pm 2 Nova The Nuclear Option
Five years after the earth-
Sovereign Beginning
In 1837 a tiny, neglected teenager woke up one morning to discover
that overnight she had become Queen of England. This new
Masterpiece drama series about the epic life of Queen Victoria follows
the young monarch from her accession to the
throne at age 18, through her education in politics, courtship and marriage, to becoming the
most powerful woman in the world. Victoria
paints a portrait of a monarch who, despite her
youth, wasted no time in showing the empire
who was in charge.

Divided We Stand
The presidential campaign of 2016 revealed the deep divide along
political lines in the United States. Frontline’s Divided States of America,
premiering days before the inauguration, offers an in-depth view of
the partisanship that gridlocked Washington, the rise of populist anger
on both sides of the aisle and the racial tensions that continue
throughout the country. “As Obama’s presidency ends and a new one
begins, this is the time to take a deep look at
where we stand—and why,” says Frontline executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath.

Pivotal Year
Before 2006, very few kids from Cincinnati’s Lower Price Hill finished high
school, much less went to college. The local Oyler School only went through
8th grade. After that, rather than ride the bus out of the neighborhood for
high school, most kids
dropped out. Enter Principal
Craig Hockenberry, who
transformed Oyler School into
a year-round, preschool
though 12th grade “community learning center,” providing
meals, a health clinic, vision
care and mental health
counseling. Senior Raven
Gribbin aspires to be the first in her troubled family to finish high school and
go to college. When Hockenberry’s job is threatened, it becomes a make-orbreak year for both of them.

the battle to launch an independent union as he and his co-workers risk
deportation and the loss of their livelihood to advocate for their rights.

Polach Joins Prestigious Local
News Circle
WGBH News award-winning Executive Managing
Editor, Linda Polach, was recently honored with the
prestigious Silver Circle Award from the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS)
Boston/New England Chapter. Since 1993, the Silver
Circle Awards have recognized TV veterans who have made significant contributions to the community for 25 years or longer.
“Throughout nearly 40 years working in local news, Linda has established
herself not just as a leader in our newsroom but also in our community,” said
Phil Redo, WGBH General Manager for Radio. “Her commitment to local
issues and voices allows us to enrich the lives of our audience on-air, online
and now in person at our new WGBH Studio at the Boston Public Library, an
effort which wouldn’t have been possible without her.”
Eric in the Evening
Honoring Dr. King

and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,

Polach joined WGBH in 2007 as Executive Producer of Greater Boston
with Emily Rooney and Beat The Press. In 2014, she became Executive
Managing Editor, overseeing all of the newsroom’s programs across radio,
television and digital. During her time with WGBH, Polach has produced
many of the major local political debates and elections, including our coverage of this year’s New Hampshire Primary. Polach spends much of her time in
the new WGBH Studio at the Boston Public Library, a project which she
spearheaded and continues to lead.
Behind the Scenes at Boston’s FBI
This fall, WGBH News Senior Reporter Phillip Martin gained exclusive access
to Boston’s FBI branch to understand how it keeps New England residents
safe. Among other interviews, Martin sat down with the leader of Boston’s
Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), Special Agent in Charge Harold H. Shaw.
“Two of the planes that flew into the Twin Towers on 9/11 left from
Logan airport. We were attacked at the Boston Marathon finish line. We had
a significant role in the Richard Reed shoe bombing attempt,” said Shaw.
“So we’ve seen it first-hand. It’s personal to us and we take it seriously.”
As the region’s FBI leader, Shaw oversees five
JTTF’s from Massachusetts to New Hampshire to Maine.
“Boston’s JTTF is an organization that most people
don’t even know exists, but which is critical to regional
and national security,” said Aaron Schachter, Executive
Producer of WGBH News. “Once again, Phillip’s dogged

99.5 WCRB
Happy New Year!
By Anthony Rudel
99.5 WCRB Station Manager
M
ay 2017 be a happy and healthy year for you and yours, and may it be
filled with more of the great music you come to WCRB to enjoy!
A little over forty years ago, Billy Joel wrote a song that begins, “Seen
the lights go out on Broadway,” and while that lyric identifies the song for
most fans, the song’s actual title is Miami 2017. I remember when that song
was released, the final song on the Turnstiles album, and can still recall how
distant 2017 seemed. Remembering that time seemed to be so apt for the
new year, because there’s something about the flip of the calendar that forces
us to, at once, look back and look ahead, so if you’ll indulge me, that’s what
we’re going to do.
During this last year, WCRB played more music than ever before, providing Boston and the surrounding area with a 24/7 classical music station
that is programmed, produced, and hosted right here by a dedicated and
talented staff, many of whom you hear every day. We are lucky to work in a
field that allows us to bring such great beauty to so many people, and we’re
careful to note that there are major markets in this country where there is
no 24/7 classical station, or where much of the programming comes from
syndication and is not locally connected. WCRB strives every day to be an
important part of this community, and as we look to this new year, we renew
our commitment to introduce more people to this incredible music, and to be
the hub of the vibrant Boston-area music scene.
But, we couldn’t do any of what we do without you, our listeners and
our devoted supporters. As this new year begins, the entire WCRB team
asked me to say Thank You on their behalf. Your generosity and involvement
makes what we do possible and, we like to think, makes this a better place
to live.
So, in this New Year 2017, you can expect more great music, programmed, produced, and hosted right here in Boston, by us, for you. You will
again be able to experience the wonder of the Boston Symphony Orchestra
through our live broadcasts all year long, including through the Tanglewood
season. (January schedule at right). You can experience the variety of superb
music and performances in our WCRB In Concert series, which has garnered
critical praise and wonderful listener comments. (January schedule at right).

New Perspective
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Fans of The Diane Rehm Show will be happy to know that, while she has
stepped down from her daily program, she will still have a voice on the issues
important to her and her audience with a monthly podcast.
Rehm began her career at WAMU in Washington, DC, as a volunteer in
1973. Six years later she took over the hosting duties of the program that
was called Kaleidoscope, which in 1984, was renamed The Diane Rehm Show.
Today, she is looking forward to hosting the podcast and traveling the
country speaking on issues like the
right to die.
As of January 2, radio journalist
Joshua Johnson will take the helm
of 1A, the new program that will
replace The Diane Rehm Show.
“At this moment, our country
needs a fresh voice that addresses the
wonderful diversity of our nation,” said
Rehm. “Joshua Johnson represents
America’s future and is the right host
at the right time.

1A will explore important issues such as policy, politics, and technology,
while also delving into lighter subjects such as pop culture, sports and
humor. “My professional passions have always centered around creativity,
exploration and service,” said Johnson. “Public radio not only rewards all
three of these things: it requires them. This moment in history demands
these attributes of us. It’s a chance to tell stories more creatively, to explore
ideas beyond our own, and to refocus on serving others”.
One of the hallmarks of The Diane Rehm Show has been civil conversation and Johnson says that will remain a signature of the new show as well.
“My mom was a schoolteacher. She taught me love, learning and service,” he adds. “I’m grateful for that, because I believe America needs to live
out those values now. They’re tough, but they’re essential.”
