Bradford Trident are to carry out some research this summer to see if there is a demand for older people in BD5 to have help in and outside the home. The Government are encouraging a move towards personalised care to improve the lives of people with an assessed need and we are exploring the viability of a personal assistant service for older people in the area. The service will also extend to vulnerable adults. The service will help people with cleaning, shopping, leisure outings, social activities and physical exercise. An MBA student from the Bradford School of Management, Santosh Balasubramanian (pictured), will be carrying out the research. During the months of February and March this year nine representatives from local faith organisations via the Trident Area Faith Forum, enrolled on an 8 week Open College Network course in Faith and Community Development. The course was funded by Faiths In Action and organised by Bradford Trident in partnership with Bradford Churches for Dialogue and Diversity and West Bowling Centre. The Course ran at the Park Lane Centre on Wednesday evenings and full day Saturdays. During their time on the course participants had got to know each other, shared experiences, discussed similarities, shared ideas on how to better their communities through a Community Development approach and even shared breakfasts and teas! One participant from the Hindu community said about his experiences of the course "We take equality and diversity for granted, but this course has enabled me to look at it more deeply.!" He said he will apply this at the Hindu Community Centre. Another participant and faith volunteer simply said, "The course has allowed me to meet those of other faiths and this is important." The course was useful and lots of fun for participants. We will be looking at creating further opportunities for faith communities to develop their skills and experience. Half Term - Full Bellies We are now a permanent fixture in the half term calendar in most of the primary schools within the area. Through our very close work with MYBD5 Extended Services, schools have benefited from healthy eating sessions carried out by staff and volunteers through the February and Easter half terms, and also during one off health promotion days at the schools. The key aim of this work is to get children to start thinking about their diets and how it could impact on their lives as adults. Some of the young people we worked with had quite a good knowledge of health issues which had been learnt through their schooling, however, the majority of young people highlighted that these were not being put into practice by either their parents or indeed themselves. We gave young people some tips on making their lunch boxes a little bit healthier, how to get their minimum of five a day fruit and vegetables and the importance of a balanced diet. In just over one week of activities we had nearly 200 children attend our classes. Dads Dish Up Delectable Delights We delivered a 7 week cook and eat programme which involved both fathers and their children at Burnett Fields Children and Family Centre in partnership with the BD5 Dads project. The group had the opportunity to learn new skills about food preparation, incorporating 'balance' in their diet and using cooking to bond and have 'healthy' relationships with their children. Families that took part decided what they wanted to cook week by week. Amongst other foods, kids and parents had the chance to try out recipes from across the globe including Indian curry and Mexican burritos. Healthy Lifestyles Project 9 Cousin Marriages and Children: the facts We have recently become the leader for a programme which is being delivered across the Bradford District around Genetics. In partnership with Attock Community Association, Burnett Fields Family and Children Centre and Woodroyd Children's Centre, the Healthy Lifestyles Project is looking for people who are interested in understanding the link between cousin marriages and inherited disorders. The programme aims to speak to families and individuals on a one to one basis as well as in a group setting to clarify some of the misinformation that is already out there around this issue. If you are interested in learning more please contact us. X-Plosive X-travaganza In May, an intergenerational musical spectacle took place at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. Over 60 older people from Mary Seacole Court, St Joseph's Church and other areas across Bradford came together to see 18 performers sing and dance some old classics. All of the performers were under the age of 15, and the big hits of the day were 'Pick a Pocket' from Oliver, 'Don't Rain On My Parade' from Funny Girl and the show stopper 'My Boy Lollipop' by Millie Small. The audience was also treated to Caribbean food and refreshments at the end of the day A big thank you goes out to the organisers X-plosive Cultural Arts, Judy Peltier, Brooke Reed and Linda Peltier Binns amongst others. Linda said, "It was a very successful event and the older people said they would love to do this again next year" . Forest Schools is a new educational approach to outdoor play and learning. The idea of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences. Forest Schools has demonstrated success with children of all ages who visit the same local woodlands on a regular basis and through play have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment. They are taught how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. Children use full sized tools, play and learn boundaries of behaviour, both physical, social, establish good confidence, self-esteem and motivation. Forest Schools will aim to develop: • • • • • • • Self Awareness Self Regulation Intrinsic motivation Empathy Good social communication skills Independence A positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence Children’s Centres Childrens Centres 13 The importance of outdoor play It is very important for children to learn to explore the unknown, the unpredictable and the fun and adventurous! Playing outdoors develops children in many ways that can help them become confident, mature, aware and positive individuals as children, teenagers and in later life adults. Playing outdoors is not only fun, messy loud and adventurous, it also empowers children to make choices, learn about themselves, other people and the environment. Empowering children through outdoor play - It enables children to make choices, be active in decision making and develops resilience. Children are more likely to invent games, express themselves and learn about the world in their own way Understanding the environment through outdoor play - It extends your child's capabilities and tests their boundaries, allows them to explore risks, undertake new experiences and explore the world. Outdoor play allows children to have Fun - This is probably the most important incentive for children, FUN! The rule is that if children enjoy something they will do it with very little encouragement. Outdoor play is messy, its adventurous, its exciting and its physical! Children enjoy play and after an hour of outdoor play with yours you can enjoy hours of rest! Using outdoor play as a learning tool - With outdoor play children learn how to problem solve, be creative and hone their abilities to conceptualise numbers through counting and scoring in games. Some simple but effective outdoor activity suggestions! Why not try simple games to get the children moving, its lots of fun for one or many children and adults too! A child's development Outdoor play helps a child develop Socially - Children play outdoors socially and develop social competencies learn to share and cooperate, learning why rules are so important, as they learn to play together, their language and communication skills also improve. Outdoor play helps develop children Physically - Children need to develop large and small motor skills and cardiovascular fitness, through running, leaping, jumping, ball handling games like throwing and catching and through other adaptive ways like pushing swings and carts, pulling, climbing, lifting and carrying. Children learn a lot through their senses. Through play they can develop their hearing, sight, smell and brain function. Children who simply spend time watching TV or playing on computers are only using two senses, sight and hearing and therefore don't develop properly. So get your’s out there! Outdoor play allows for good Emotional Development- It develops social skills, children learn how to respect each other, they develop their independence, self esteem, mental well being and grow up fit and healthy with good emotional competencies. Outdoor play helps Physiological Development Outdoor play burns off lots of calories, which helps to prevent obesity and heart disease in later life. Outdoor light is also a great source of vitamin D and stimulates the pineal gland, which is vital for a healthy immune system and helps us to feel happier. We all know how quickly bacteria and viruses spread in environments indoors, and the way to reduce the spread of infection is lots of fresh air, so there is something fundamentally healthy about being outdoors. How about a simple game of Simon Says to get children moving and to build an understanding of collaboration. Or a first ever hopscotch game to build mind and body co-ordination! A competitive game of races, race children against each other to build competitiveness and strong legs! Where were you born and when did you first start playing cricket? I was born not so far from here at St Luke's Hospital and I have lived on Springmill Street all my life. I've always played cricket as an infant, since I was in my nappies. I started playing with the hard ball at 10 which was at Idle CC and then moved onto Pudsey St Lawrence for three years and its then when I went onto play for Yorkshire Schools and senior cricket. Did any family members play professionally? No, but all my brothers have played league cricket, some for Bowling Old Lane CC and Great Horton CC and so have my Uncles. Would you say that helped you break through into the professional scene? Kind of, there were many roads I could have taken, me and my family thought that going to Idle would get me away from things, make new friends from different cultures, backgrounds and broaden my views. So it wasn't just a cricket thing it was to broaden my experiences socially too. What would you say is you're greatest sporting achievement up to date? It was against Kent in September last year; I got 5 wickets the best figures by any Yorkshire player throughout the whole season (5-32). It was a massive achievement playing my second game, the Headingley crowd where wondering 'who is this Ashraf?', 'What has he got to offer?' after my debut at Nottinghamshire. One of the best feelings was the standing ovation I got when I was leaving the field, it is something you could never replicate. How do you relax away from the game? When I come home I want to spend time with family, play with my nieces when they come over, talk to my mum about certain issues in my life that are non cricket related. Moin celebrates another wicket. So who would you say has been your greatest supporter(s)? It's my family because they have been by my side since day one and seen me grow as a person and a cricketer. They have shown me great support. My eldest brother has taken me everywhere, Yorkshire schools games to even first class games. My other brothers who have led practice sessions and taught me how to play the game. My mum and dad have continually shown me tremendous support and love. My best friends who have always been there for me and have relieved stress that I have had and have known when I need time off from cricket and when I need to practice and train. Sometimes they know my schedule better than me! Finally, what advice would you give to young people trying to pursue a career? I think its working hard, I know it's a cliché but if you don't work hard you will die wanting. You will think what if I did this? What if I did that? Make sure that doesn't come into what you want to achieve. Whether kids want to become doctors, lawyers, architects, sports professionals or any profession the principles are the same, keep trying and don't let anyone tell you what you want to achieve or become. You need to know that nothing in life comes easy and if you put hard work, dedication, prayers and belief into it, I think God will reward you. red dezign BD5 is designed by Red Dezign Ltd 01274 700427 or www.reddezign.com
