Around Kolkata there are signs regularly say ‘obey the traffic rules’,
but it didn’t actually look like anyone did. The chaos on the roads,
however, meant we were probably safer than we are on the roads
here. The drivers always had their eyes open to what was going on.
We drove slowly most of the time to avoid the pedestrians, the
rickshaws and the animals that sauntered up the roads....
Perhaps we have our own ‘traffic rules’ – unwritten rules that have
been there for a long time that govern the way we do and think. We
don’t know why they are there but our culture says we should not
and cannot break them. We don’t always want to risk doing things
that might deviate from long standing traditions just in case.....
Jesus was not a stickler for tradition or rules – he went with what was
needed at that moment. He sat and talked with a woman at the well
from an ‘unclean’ race, he dined with tax collectors and hung out with
those no-one else would go near. He got the rule keepers backs up.
Perhaps we need to drive through life as a church more like the
drivers in Kolkata – adapting and remoulding with our eyes open to
what is going on as we seek to be God’s people, serving him in every
way throughout our whole lives.
With every blessing, Claire
A Big ‘Thank You’, and a Little ‘Hello’!
As some of you may already be aware, Harry Allen has decided to step
down from his position as church magazine editor. Harry has
devoted much time and effort to putting this magazine together for
our congregation and as such deserves our thanks for his hard work –
thank you, Harry! From this month, I will be stepping into Harry’s
shoes. All future magazine submissions should be forwarded to –
[email protected].
God bless, Sara.

Methodist Prayer Handbook 2012/2013
The Prayer handbook is now available to order at £3.50 per copy and
anyone wishing to order one please see Susan Applegate by Sunday
19th August 2012.
It is arranged as a 31 day prayer circle (with daily hymn and lectionary
readings); each interweaves timeless prayers with contributions from
Britain, Ireland and around the world.
This year’s addition entitled ‘Crossing the Chasm’ explores the theme of
reconciling discipleship; living the peace of Christ in a broken world and
being drawn into God’s programme of reconciliation within ourselves,
our Church and our world.
Last year’s handbook was on the theme of ‘Run the Race’ and the
following prayer was included for the Olympics and Paralympics
Gracious and living Lord, we pray for the youth of this world who will be
coming to our land to take part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Strengthen all sports men and women as they prepare to compete to the
best of their ability.
Let us rejoice with those who win medals, and support by our prayers
those who must wait for another Olympiad.
May these Games be a means whereby the leaders and people of
tomorrow’s world will establish unbreakable ties with those from other
lands too, that competition between nations may, in future, be reserved
for the sports field in a world where there is peace and harmony. Amen.

On your birthday you will receive a birthday card, together with
an envelope for your donation. This envelope can be put in the
