Ask the children to identify something that is alike about two of the dolls or pictures. Ask them to wnd something that is different about two of them. Compares Teaching with a Purpose Read a book about the uniqueness of people. Introduce the book by reading aloud the title, author, and illustrator. Tell them, “The title has words that tell us what the book is about.” Count the words aloud as you touch each one and then make a summary statement, such as, “There are four words in this title…one, two, three, four.” Ask children to predict how the book will be about the new words alike and different. As you read the book aloud, pause periodically to discuss how the characters are demonstrating the concepts of alike and different and how this relates to the children. Predicts Relates Transitioning to Learning Centers As children choose their centers, ask questions using the new words, such as, “What are two things that are different in the block center?” Alike and Different: Learning about Us ECS-14023 Theme Book AllAboutMe Distribution M2.indd 14 Connects Page 14 9/25/14 10:24 AM All About Me Learning Extension Play the “Just Like Me” game with the children. Tell the children they will look for things that are alike between themselves and other children. Begin by giving an example of someone who has something in common with you. Sit in a circle and take turns standing up and saying, for example,“I have blue pants. Jerome has blue pants just like me.” Encourage the children to look for similarities other than physical ones. They may also look for the same number of siblings, same favorite food, same wrst letter of their name, etc. Repeat the responses back to the children such as, “Yes, you and Kayla both have brothers.” Provide realistic pictures of people’s faces. Encourage children to group them by how they are alike. Ask them to count the number in each group by touching the pictures as they count. Connects Reinforces Repeats Classifies Learning Center Connections Math – Add the face cards. Encourage children to continue grouping them, and counting and comparing groups. Rotated resources Literacy – Add books with the theme of uniqueness, such as Tacky the Penguin or The Ugly Duckling. Provide a concrete example as you wrst introduce the words, such as two red crayons and a crayon and a block. Expanding the Concepts – For children who show interest in the concept of comparison, add clipboards and paper in the writing area. Encourage children to make lists, using simple drawings or words that an adult helps them spell, of things that are alike and things that are different in the classroom. Discuss the lists with the children. Informal Assessment Observations\ Does the child reyect upon self attributes, experiences, preferences, and traits in order to compare with others?
