Three-Leaf Clover SPRING FORWARD Daylight saving time begins March 11 at 2 a.m. Don’t forget to set your clocks up one hour!! The word “shamrock” is derived from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” Shamrock refers to a variety of three-leaved plants, but many experts regard a yellow-flowered clover, Trifolium dubium, as the official Irish shamrock. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society indicates that it’s probably just good genes. The survey of 477 individuals age 95 and older revealed that people nearing 100 are as apt to indulge in unhealthy habits as the general population. But before you scarf down that pint of butter pecan ice cream, consider this: Renowned heart surgeon Mehmet Oz says healthy habits do make a difference. While the 90-somethings in the study were gifted with extraordinary DNA, the rest of us can make lifestyle changes to help us thrive Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was taken prisoner to Ireland from England when he was only 16. After six years as a servant, he escaped and returned home. As an adult, he became a priest and returned to Ireland as a missionary. As he began converting the Irish to Christianity, he used the clover to explain the Holy Trinity. We still associate the clover with St. Patrick. Saint Patrick died on March 17 and that day is widely celebrated by Irish and non-Irish alike. Team Member of the M nth PENNY JONES, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND ADMISSIONS in our later years. Dr. Oz shared with Time Magazine his tips for living longer and better: Exercise. Aim for at least three 30-minute workouts a week. Get adequate vitamin D. Get 15 minutes of sun exposure every day or take a vitamin D supplement. Eat whole foods. Processing robs foods of vital phytochemicals and micronutrients. Watch your weight. Obesity leads to high blood sugar, high LDL cholesterol and high blood pressure. Sleep tight. Sleep increases levels of growth hormone, a longevity booster. Try to log at least seven hours a night. Have a purpose. Loving your life may be the biggest vitality builder of all. Penny came on board in September as the marketer and admissions coordinator. She is usually the first person a potential resident and family members meet. She is the perfect person to represent Arbor Village. Penny is friendly and outgoing. She has lots of energy and she genuinely cares about the welfare of the people she meets in the community. We are glad Penny chose Arbor Village as her home base. She has years of marketing experience and she is a valuable and very welcomed member of our team. If you don’t know Penny, stop by her office and get acquainted. She may be difficult to catch, because she spends the majority of her time out of the building visiting hospitals.
