To the Secretary for the New Zealand Geographic Board
I've just read the article in today's press about the use of the n-word in place names
in Canterbury. As a Cantabrian I'm horrified and I definitely support a change to
the three names: Niggerhead, Nigger Hill and Nigger Stream.

Hi,
Please change the place names Niggerhead, Nigger Hill and Nigger Stream and
rename as Tawhai Hill, Kānuka Hills and Steelhead Stream respectively.
I think it’s ugly that we have these names on our maps still – they have absolutely
no positive or geographic respect. We should name them with culturally respectful
names such as the Maori names put forward.

Stream should be renamed Tawhai Hill, Kānuka Hills and Steelhead Stream
respectively.
I cannot imagine the argument which would suggest otherwise.

I understand it is proposed to replace the names Nigger Hill and Nigger Stream in
the Esk River catchment with more acceptable and appropriate names. I fully
support this proposal, notwithstanding that I wrote a report with a colleague Dr
Peter Johnson titled:
Nigger Stream, Esk Valley. Botanical report on wetlands and bog
pine shrublands. Unpublished DSIR Vegetation Report No. 641,
28 pp. 1988. ( this report is available on request from the Landcare
Research Library Archives at Lincoln).
I am sure my former DSIR co-author Peter Johnson would also support the
proposed name changes, but he could be consulted for his opinion.
This brings me to a consideration of an appropriate replacement name for Nigger
Stream. One name suggested in the background information I have seen is
“Steelhead Stream,” after an introduced or exotic freshwater trout. In my opinion, a
botanical name would be far more appropriate in view of the significance of the
site, centred on the Mounds of Misery, as the most outstanding habitat in the
country of the endangered endemic shrub Hebe armstrongii, together with
abundant shrubs of the endemic bog pine, Halocarpus bidwillii, and many other
indigenous plant species, in an association often referred to as “Wilderness”
vegetation. This site is bordered by the Arthurs Park National Park and Lochinvar
Forest Conservation land, and is located within the Mt White high country station.
This unique landscape is not formally protected as far as I know.
Two prominent hills bordering the site are named Big Flora and Little Flora and are
separated from each other by the Flora Stream, highlighting the significant plant
life of the site. I suggest that a most suitable replacement name for Nigger Stream
would be Hebe Stream and I recommend this name for consideration in
subsequent discussions.

I am writing on behalf of Multicultural New Zealand, the NZ Federation of
Multicultural Councils, to support the NZ Geographic Board's proposal to rename
certain geographic features in North Canterbury that contain the word "Nigger".
Multicultural New Zealand offers a collective voice for ethnic, migrant and refugee
New Zealanders. It has 18 constituent local multicultural councils as well as
national advisory councils for women, seniors, youth and business.
Our organisation was not aware of the existence of the place names Nigger Hill,
Nigger Stream and Niggerhead in North Canterbury before the media publicity
surrounding the decision of the NZGB to recommend a change. We were shocked
that such names were still officially recorded in New Zealand. We count amongst
our members many Africans and other people of colour, to whom this is not just an
academic question - sadly it is still not uncommon for people of colour to be
racially abused by being called 'nigger' and other derogatory and offensive words.
We can assure you from personal experience that the term 'nigger' is deliberately
used in this country in circumstances where there can be no doubt that the intent is
to offend, hurt and abuse. It is therefore contrary to the principles of racial equality
enshrined in the NZ Bill of Rights Act and the Human Rights Act for such words to
be given any form of official sanction.
We therefore strongly support the NZGB's proposal to change the names of
Niggerhead to Tawhai Hill, Nigger Stream to Steelhead Stream and Nigger Hill to
Kanuka Hills, subject to confirmation from Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu that the
names are appropriate. We would also urge you to review the other place names
that contain the words "Niger" and "Darkie" as identified in the NZGB Secretariat's
report. And we wish to commend the person who has proposed these changes to the
NZGB for their initiative.

Kia Ora LINZ,
I was recently tramping in Aurthurs pass national park and Hurunui Forest park
and was genuninely shocked by what can only be described as institutionalised
racism, there is a nigger head peak, nigger stream, nigger hut, a nigger hill. This is
so backward in this day and age! When you digitised these maps surely there was
an oppurtunity to change these names and you didnt. This smacks of a kind of
casual acceptable racism that is really NOT acceptable! How do you think Maori
and Pacifika people feel when they see names like that? What do the many
tourists I saw using these topo maps make of us as a country? Its embarassing! Its
not a quaint old name that speaks about our traditions and history it is a monument
to a shameful era when it was ok to talk about the indigenous people and first
people to explore and probably name those peaks and rivers.
I suggest you rename any name right across Aotearoa that has the word nigger in it
and as some sort of compensation for such a shameful policy (or lack of policy)
and find an appropriate Maori name. Time for some RESPECT.Shame on you
LINZ for letting this practice continue well into the 21st Century. LAME as!

I strongly oppose retaining any place name that contains the offensive and racist
word beginning with N. There is no reason for that word to continue to be used in
any place name in this society. New Zealand should be embarrassed to have place

Hello there,
I discovered the consultation via comments in online social media. There was some
concern that a number of submissions were against the change.
I would like to submit, to support a change from the 3 locations with the name
'Nigger' included. Although the acceptability of such terms in the past and usage
amongst New Zealanders may have been less offensive, they are undeniably
inappropriate in our current values. As a pakeha New Zealander, it's undeniably
embarrassing to feature such names in Aotearoa New Zealand and I would support
the change to whatever names you have selected.

I write to support the renaming of the three locations cited
here http://www.linz.govt.nz/regulatory/place-names/place-nameconsultation/13397 to the names proposed above.
The use of the names currently appended to these locations is unacceptable in
contemporary society. As they stand they evoke the casual, entrenched racism of a
former era and one which as a society we should disavow.
The proposed names draw on both Māori and Pākehā naming practices and land
use and are thus appropriate.

Kia ora,
I support the change from the existing offensive names to the new names suggested
on this page http://www.linz.govt.nz/regulatory/place-names/place-nameconsultation/13397. The existing names don't reflect language that is considered
respectful in New Zealand. Using them has effects ranging from awkwardness and
embarrassment to quite profound harm for New Zealand people (and visitors who
might be tramping). I don't see historical value in preserving traditional names which are only a hundred and a half years old anyway - that have such negative
consequences. The new names reflect local features as well as being less harmful
and sounding more like a modern New Zealand place name.

I support the proposed names changes for two reasons:
1: I always support the use of tradition Māori names were possible. This honours
our commitment under the treaty of Waiting and the Māori language act to support
and respect the Māori language.
2: The term nigger is offensive and inappropriate and has no place in our langauge

Nigger is an offensive word to many people. For example, the
Oxford Dictionary states that "it remains one of the most
racially offensive words in the language."

the consultation, NZGB policy is quoted: "the NZGB considers
place names that are in poor taste or likely to cause offence,
and names that are discriminatory or derogatory in terms of
ethnicity, gender, creed or political affiliation unacceptable."
Nigger meets a general test of being derogatory, and so I support
the proposal to change the name. I do not have a strong view on
what the name should be changed to, being unfamiliar with the
area.

My submission is to support the proposal to alter the existing recorded names
because they are in poor taste, offensive, discriminatory and derogatory for (i)
Nigger Hill to Kānuka Hills based on widespread growth of kānuka in the vicinity
of the feature, and recognising that ‘Hills’ plural would be a more appropriate and
descriptive generic term, and (ii) Nigger Stream to Steelhead Stream based on the
steelhead (or rainbow) trout commonly found in the stream, defined from
NZTopo50-BV22 221542 – 228384, and (iii) Niggerhead to Tawhai Hill based on
the growth of native tawhai on and around the slopes of the hill, located at
NZTopo50-BU22 349757.
The N* words are offensive and meaningless as compared to the proposed names
and I would be very happy to see them changed.
