PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
St. Katharine Drexel Chapel
JUNE 18, 2017
Dear friends / Estimados amigos,
Continuously around the world, at some moment or another on this great planet of ours, a believer is offering
the Eucharist to another believer while saying: “The Body of Christ.” The one receiving it responds “Amen.” In that
short exchange lies a profound mystery, one that the Church regularly calls us to pause and reflect upon when we come
to the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. In addition, we are to be renewed in faith and in fervor for the gift Jesus gives us in His Body and Blood.
The Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy remembers the bread from heaven that sustained the Israelites
in their forty years of desert wandering. Manna was the God-given gift which provided them with the nourishment they
needed to continue. Without it, the desert could have become a grave for the Chosen People rather than a passage to a
land of their own, overflowing with milk and honey. As necessary as the gift of the manna was, however, the people became bored with its ordinariness and longed for foods from other places and sources. Manna was scorned by many, and
became a source of contention between Moses and the people. It made them dependent on God, something which many
did not like, and they were loud in their ingratitude. Any chance that anyone sees him/herself in their complaining? At
times we may go through the motions of the Eucharistic rite, without allowing the transformative grace that the Eucharist brings into our lives. This grace helps us to grow and deepen our faith. Do we honestly believe that Christ becomes
truly present and desires to be consumed when we receive Holy Communion? If we do not consciously, willingly and
deliberately believe that Jesus is present in the broken bread, then St. Paul says our eating and drinking brings judgment
on ourselves. So that we may avoid this judgment, the biblical writers call us to renew our sensitivity and gratitude for the
gift of the Corpus Christi (the body and blood of Christ) and the union with Christ that comes with it.
First, the gift is a sharing in the very life of Jesus, the “living bread come from heaven.” As bread, Jesus is food for
eternal life, but not before being broken on the cross. In the sacrifice on Calvary Jesus offers His very self to be consumed, so that whoever eats and drinks will have eternal life.
Another dimension that we celebrate today in the gift of the body of Christ is that those who eat the Eucharistic
Body of Christ become the ecclesial body of Christ. Our participation in this Sacrament incorporates us into the body of
Christ that is the community of baptized believers and makes us responsible for that community. Our “Amen” says Yes!
to the sacramental Jesus as well as to one another. The great St. John Chrysostom explained it this way in an ancient
homily:
Just as bread is the result of many grains and although remaining themselves are not distinguished from one another because they are united, so we too are mutually united with Christ . . .
However it is described – as “Church,” “People of God,” the “community of believers” – as we celebrate the gift of the
Body and Blood of Christ, we also celebrate the gift of one another in Christ.
You and I are responsible for the community members who share in Eucharist. With 77.4 million members, Roman Catholicism is the largest religious denomination in the United States, comprising 22% of the population as of 2017.
But de facto, the fastest-growing group are non-practicing Catholics. They do not attend Mass and do not receive the
sacraments. They are like deaths in our spiritual families.
Outreach and reconciliation fall to those of us who do celebrate Communion, who believe that this is a matter of
life and death. Next Sunday, as a parish we will try something new: a PARISH PICNIC open to all. Let’s try to make
Fischer’s Park as full as possible. See page 3 in this week’s bulletin for more information and details.

Congratulations to all of the 8th grade graduates of MATER DEI CATHOLIC SCHOOL. This past Tuesday, Holy
Mass and graduation exercises were held at St. Maria Goretti Church in Hatfield. Many sons and daughters of St. Stanislaus parishioners received scholarships to private and diocesan high schools as well as class awards for academic excellence and outstanding performance in physical education. Sadly, we say adieu to retiring, long-time teacher Miss Bonnie
Marino and are in awe of her dedication to Catholic education. Many of you may have sat in her classroom over the last
44 years(!). We wish her happiness and good health, and enjoyment in retirement.
We are proud of all graduates from the Class of 2017 at all levels: from universities, colleges, private schools,
public, and Archdiocesan. Keep those achievements coming as you transition to a new educational environment.

Text of a letter received from Archbishop Charles Chaput, about the Peter’s Pence collection:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Soon our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our participation supports the charitable work of Pope
Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collection,
you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world.
Pope Francis called to us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address, “May efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of
encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people.” We
are taking up this collection to be a part of the Church’s effort to promote a culture of encounter and justice. Your support makes it possible for the Holy Father to carry out his charitable works around the world, to help victims of war, natural disasters, and other difficult situations.
This year the Peter’s Pence Collection will be taken at all Masses on the weekend of June 24 & 25, 2017. Let us join
with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world.
Please prayerfully consider how you can best support the collection this year.
Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,
Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap
Archbishop of Philadelphia
Here at St. Stanislaus, we will not hold a separate collection. Please place your donation in the regular Sunday Offering
basket in a designated envelope. Thank you for your generosity to this Appeal.
Did you know… You can watch the Mass Sunday mornings at 5:30 am on WPVI-TV, Channel 6. It is rebroadcast
each Sunday at 9 am and 5 pm on DT 2, Channel 6 digital, and at 10 am on LaSalle University 56. And you can listen
to Archbishop Chaput’s Sunday Homilies any time at: http://archphila.org/archbishopchaput/homilies/index.htm.

JUNE 18, 2017
Quiero pertenecerte siempre. ¡Venga tu Reino a mi corazón!
