This course will focus on four degenerative diseases:
Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s
Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. An overview
of pathology, clinical implications regarding disease
progression and pharmacology and a review of the most
recent evidence for intervention will be presented.
Discussion will also take place surrounding restraints
and documentation.

Course Faculty
Renee Gaines Loftspring, EdD, PT, is an assistant
professor at the College of Mount St Joseph in Cincinnati.
Her responsibilities include teaching foundational
science and neuro rehabilitation in the Doctorate in
Physical Therapy program. Her current research
surrounds the effects of exercise and sport on the
quality of life of persons with Multiple Sclerosis as
well as those with a physical disability. She is the new
co-chair for membership with OPTA, the representative
for the Disabled Section of USA Hockey and founder
of a non-profit organization called the Cincinnati
Icebreakers Sled Hockey program, offering adaptive
ice hockey [sled hockey] to both youth and adults
with a physical disability in the greater Cincinnati/
Dayton/N. Kentucky area.

The participant will be able to:
1. Identify the pathology underlying four degenerative
diseases: Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease,
Huntington’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
2. Discuss several clinical considerations in regard to
disease progression and pharmacology when working with a person with a degenerative disease.
3. Have a greater understanding about how to
reduce or eliminate restraints for a person with a
degenerative disease.
4. Identify several new intervention strategies related
to working with a person with one of the four
degenerative diseases to enhance functional ability
(strategies may be team-based versus disciplinerelated).
