Section 1, Part 1 Instructions
o You will base your prezi on the information from page 434 to the end of page
435 of your textbook.
o Include the “Setting the Scene” section in your prezi. However, it should only
take up one or two stops.
o Do not copy sentences directly out of the book unless they are definitions for
key words, or they are sentences that I have listed below for you to underline.
o Remember to make key words like predestination bold and to define them.
o Written below are sentences that will be on the test. Include these in your prezi
and remember to underline them.
o The Second Great Awakening was a religious movement that swept the
nation and stressed free will rather than predestination.
o The Second Great Awakening encouraged the spread of social reform
because it stressed self-improvement. Once people tried to improve and save
their own souls, they also started to want to improve all of society.
o (essay) One important social reform was hospital reform. Before 1840,
mentally disabled people were treated as criminals and locked in prisons.
They were locked in cells that were small, dark and cold.
o (essay) Thanks to the efforts of Dorothea Dix, insanity began to be treated as
an illness instead of a crime.
