PTA President’s Message
Now that we've had January to catch up after the holiday
season, our PTA is getting busy! Planning is in the works for
our Talent Show, Box Tops store, Shamrock Shuffle,
Carnival, Spring Book Fair, Friendship Day, Teacher
Appreciation Week, Blue Ribbon Week, Earth Week, Bike
Rodeo, Spring Fundraiser & more. We welcome all parents
interested in volunteering. Stop by room 13, send us an
email or give one of our board members a call. We'd love to
help you find something that works with your schedule.
SAVE THE DATE for our next PTA Association
meeting on February 19th, at 6pm in the Cafeteria. We will
be voting in our 2015-2016 PTA Board, announcing our
Reflections winners along with a display of all entries & Mr.
Kamida's students have prepared a musical performance
for us. Be sure to stop by the cafeteria while on campus.
You'll find your child's Mileage Club totals, or Box Tops
earnings by student & class, the current week's Husky
Folder contents, Lunch Menus, etc. Need a Husky shirt?
We have quite a few extras available in various sizes (youth
& adult). Torrance Education Foundation Lexus Raffle
tickets are now available. $20 of the $30 ticket will be
donated back to Yukon. Our very own Mrs.Wassil is a past
car winner....maybe you are next!

AFFECTION: Warm hugs will nurture me and make
this world a friendlier
place.
ACCEPTANCE: Appreciate me for the individual I
am with my unique gifts
and special talents.
RESPECT: Treat me like an important and valuable
person and I will
learn to respect and honor myself and others.
FORGIVENESS: Remind me that nobody's perfect
and that it feels much
better to forgive than hold a grudge.
You are your child's compass point, steer in these
directions and you
will have a child that will flourish!
Warmly, Elaine Wassil

Daniel Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) He was a great
jazz trumpet player, composer, and singer. He was
nicknamed Satchmo because some people said that his
mouth was like a satchel.
 George Washington Carver (1865-1943) was an
American scientist, educator, humanitarian, and former
slave. Carver developed hundreds of products from
peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, and soybeans; his
discoveries greatly improved the agricultural output and
the health of Southern farmers.
 Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was a great man
who worked for racial equality in the USA. During the
1950's, Dr. King became active in the movement for civil
rights and racial equality. He participated in the
Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott and many other
peaceful demonstrations that protested the unfair
treatment of African-Americans. He won the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1964.
 Thurgood Marshall (1908 - 1993) was the first AfricanAmerican justice of the US Supreme Court. Marshall
was on the team of lawyers in the historic Supreme
Court trial concerning school desegregation, Brown v.
Board of Education (1954). As a result of this trial, the
"separate but equal" doctrine in public education was
overthrown.
 Barack Obama (born August 4, 1961) is the 44th
President of the United States of America. He was first
elected President on November 4, 2008 (as a
Democrat), and was inaugurated on January 20, 2009.
He was re-elected for a second term in 2012. His VicePresident both times was Joseph Biden. Barack Obama
is the first African-American president of the USA.
 Rosa Parks (1913 - 2005) was a pivotal figure in the
fight for civil rights. On December 1, 1955, a
Montgomery, Alabama, bus driver ordered Mrs. Parks to
give up her seat to a white man. When she refused, she
was fined and arrested. This incident prompted a citywide bus boycott, which eventually resulted in a
Supreme Court ruling that segregation on city buses is
unconstitutional.
