We seem to be running flat out towards the end of our season. Hope we can all keep up the pace for a little longer. We are looking forward to being the host club for the Zone Games on the 5th of May. It is a little crazy in some of the houses at the moment but we are getting there. It is really appreciated the overwhelming support from our families to get this event organised and up and running. Personally I think this is the event that is the most fun in our state and zone calendar. I know the new format is a bit strange for those of us who have been going for a while but I suppose we need to go with the flow and make sure we still have fun. The one real positive I see in this system is that both sections send off teams to state so we could come home with two champion teams being Junior and Senior. (Oh the dreams of crazy DCs!!!) I am excited that we have been able to put a team in both sections and I know they will do their best on the 5th. BUT the most important thing I want those riders to do is ENJOY themselves! We know you will be doing your best, just relax and have fun. I am looking for great effort but also smiles, grins, laughter, cheering and all the good stuff. Now, for the other important, but perhaps less fun bit. Parents, we really need everyone there doing their job. You will have been emailed out the revised job list by our lovely Lesley. Please check it carefully. If you are not sure what your job involves give me a call. If I have missed you off REALLY give me a call!! WE are stretched to the max with all the jobs. All our Dads (and granddads) are involved in the setting up of gear. We have been lent a “Gater” (no teeth!) by Fernpark so this will make the job easier! The gates will be opening at 7:30 and gear check is 8:30 for teams. If you are a line steward there is a meeting at 8:45 as well. We will all have to be up on our toes very early. WE NEED ALL available parents on the Saturday to set up. Please please make this weekend free so that everyone has a good one. Now, on to another fun part of our year. Alison Hall has again taken on the big task of organising our end of season dinner. After talking to members of the club it has been decided to go back to the Cherry Shed. You will be receiving your invitations very soon in the mail. Please help her with the organisation by returning the reply slip with money in plenty of time so reservation numbers can be sent in on time. We look forward to another great night and I hope everyone is able to come along and eat and be merry. There is a rather large section from State/zone meeting this time in the newsletter. (Most of the changes are also available in the PCAT newsletter on their website, in case we have become confused re all this & made any misinterpretations at zone). Please read carefully as it applies to many people. Must fly, phone going mad, as am I. Cheers DC Jenny SOME OF OUR MEMBERS ARE INTERSTATE AT PRESENT BRITTANY BROCKETT Brittany is currently studying at university in Queensland, but has been an active riding member of Mersey Valley for several years. She turned 18 last December. Brittany rides Errahl Ashqua, a pure Arab mare known as Ash at home, & Aurora Phoenix, a buckskin stockhorse, paddock name of Phee. Brittany rode to represent MV at grade 3 trials last year, and has been a member of the games team. We wish her well with her studies, and hope she is enjoying her time in Queensland. ANDREA HENDREY Andrea, known to us all as Andie, is currently working at Heath Ryan’s stables in N.S.W. and having a great time from all reports. Members will recall her article in a recent newsletter, sharing some of her experiences whilst there. She has her horse, GP Cat Emperor, (Diego) with her, and is able to compete on him while in N.S.W. Diego is a 7 y.o. 16.1hh chestnut thoroughbred gelding “off the track”. Andie also has Biffy, the great little games pony and allrounder, who is on lease to Sarah Rayner, and Eddie, another thoroughbred. We have word of another horse, Jesse, at home with Grainne still! We are yet to see this young one out and about, he looks very interesting from the photos. Andrea’s favourite pony club activity is “going eventing!” Her best experience in PC was being in the winning grade 2 trials team with Tayla & Carisa a couple of years ago in Hobart; and also competing at the National Prince Phillip Mounted Games. Andie also enjoys drama & singing. (A few years ago MV members all enjoyed a night out to watch her in the starring role of the Devonport Choral Society’s production of The Secret Garden.) Her favourite food is chocolate and favourite TV programme is Doctor Who. OUT AND ABOUT Well done to Brooke, who was MV’s only riding representative at the recent fun gymkhana at Circular Head. We hope she enjoyed her day. A few of our eventing riders were still keen after Trials, and rode at the recent ODE at Deloraine, held in conjunction with the Northern Eventing Championships. Tayla rode Cindy’s horse, Mister, in grade 2 (prelim) as well as Darcey (riding for the eventing association); Karley entered Bess in PC grade 3 & Alison competed on big Matt (Cathy Oliver’s horse) in PC grade 1. It was great to see Grover enjoying a day out with Carolyne on board. We also had Elesha, Bianca, & Cindy competing with the eventing association. CAITLIN RADFORD Caitlin, who is 14, has been a member of MV for some years now. She rides Bamborough Jitterbug, or Jitty, a welsh B pony. Caitlin also has Bimbadeen Mascot, known at home as Star, who is a riding pony. The family also own Greenwood Park Ambition, or Thunder, the lovely gentleman horse that looks after all his riders. Caitlin attends St. Brendan Shaw College. Her other activities include netball. BIG HUGS FROM OUR HORSES TOO! XXXXXX REMINDER TO RIDERS Our dinner is coming up in June. For all those who were awarded perpetual trophies last year, now is the time to get them out, make sure you have had your details engraved on them, and give them a polish perhaps. Please make sure they are ready to return in time for the presentations at our annual dinner on 15th June. Thank you. FROM THE ZONE: Clarification about visiting rallies to other clubs – Doing a visiting rally on the same day as your own club’s rally may be counted as a qualifying rally provided that both DCs give permission, and that the visit to the other club is for a specific purpose, eg. For doing a PC test, or for special training unavailable at your own club. Attending a state team training day, eg for state games team, on a rally day, can be counted as a qualifying rally. No barefoot boots are allowed to be worn by horses at PC competitions. Glue on shoes can be used. There will be an open book exam for SJ course designers and judges, as well as Technical Delegates. Carol Hobson is putting together criteria to be covered. On Saturday 15th June at the Westbury Community Centre, there will be a workshop for C test & above assessors, including information on how to mark the new workbooks. Carol Hobson will run this. There is a need to keep up to date, to remain on the list of assessors. The new games handbook is available on the PCAT website All TDs, judges, etc need to keep their qualifications updated. Is anyone interested in becoming qualified as a course designer or TD? Please let DC Jenny know if you might want to do this. For state games, riders in the JUNIOR team only may use bits other than snaffles, but bit abuse will be penalised, and could result in elimination. For grade 5 eventing, speed will now be 300mpm. In our zone we don’t time this grade, and this will remain so for events in the NW zone. After much discussion, there were several changes to the rules for state championships. Riders can have two horses in a club team at Trials & SJ championships, as long as it doesn’t displace another rider/horse combination. Grade 3 club teams at trials will be nominated BEFORE the event; each team must have at least three riders, but may have four, the best three scores counting towards the team total. Each team may have only two associates (riders over 16). Trials teams can be a combination of two clubs, but there will not be any zone teams. There will be no zone teams at dressage & SJ championships, only club teams. Grade 3 will not be split into three age groups. Instead it will be divided into members (16 & under on Jan 1st) and associates (over 16). This will be for SJ & dressage, as well as trials. The trophy for individuals in grade 3 SJ will only be awarded to a member (associates will receive ribbons but no trophy) State dressage championships will now be held each year on the first Sunday in April, unless this is Easter. State Showjumping championships will be held each year on the first Sunday in December. It will be held this year 2013 as part of next season’s championships, and is to be hosted by the NW zone. For Trials, it will be necessary for riders to have three qualifying ODEs at the nominated grade. This can include the previous year’s trials. For dressage championships, riders will need two qualifying dressage tests scored at 60% or over, and these must be at dressage competitions. “qualifying” days to be held, only competition days. No ODE tests to be used and no For showjumping championships, riders will need two qualifying rounds at the nominated height (remember subsequent rounds may go up 15cm in height at champs). showjumping rounds cannot be used as qualifiers. ODE There will be an official draw for clubs irrespective of distance travelling to championships, and organisers will adhere to this when planning the event. Riders can only compete in three dressage tests at the championship, including the musical ride or quadrille. There will be $235 from the PCAT raffle going to each zone to be put towards running a clinic. Selection day for games teams will be 1st June at Kentish; juniors will be at 10.00am and seniors at 1.00pm NW zone will run the dressage and SJ championships next season. This will be done as a ZONE effort, probably with dressage at Inglis grounds, and possibly showjumping as well. (Stanley show is the same weekend, and this could be a possible venue – likely to not be accepted by state!) HELP WANTED The NW zone is looking for someone to volunteer as event secretary, in particular for showjumping champs which will be in December. Is there anyone interested to take this on please? All clubs will need to provide volunteers to help run these two events. In particular, we need to remember that Inglis PC members have only just completed a mammoth task in running trials, and we must not expect them to contribute more than other clubs. It is important that ALL clubs assist, as the funds raised will go towards the zone coffers, which are a little depleted after the purchase of the dressage arenas. Nomination dates for C* and higher tests will now be 31st July and 31st January. This enables riders to nominate at two different times each year. Remember Tasmania is trialling open book exams for these tests. 2014 TRIALS will be held in the Southern zone. Dressage & SJ will be at the TEC at Lauderdale, with a new cross country course being built at Monmouth. TDs will be Hunter Doherty and Andrew Gibson.
