Creates Opportunities
At The Immokalee Foundation, we have a focused and disciplined approach to providing supplemental educational
support with measurable outcomes. Our program delivers an abundance of instructional guidance with financial assistance
for post-secondary education.
Our goal is to outline an indvidual pathway to success for our students. That personal plan nurtures his or her development
into an independent adult—one who will have choices in post-secondary education as well as a greater opportunity for
lifelong economic independence. All along that pathway, we give every student resources, encouragement and direction
that teach, motivate, nurture and inspire them to be accountable for their lives and their educational success. Learning
these life skills is a luxury that many children living in poverty never get to learn. Our mission is to help every child in our
program become capable of pursuing a productive life far beyond the limits of Immokalee.

Next Door
Not far from the affluent Collier County communities of Naples and Marco Island, Immokalee is home to 25,000 yearround residents. As part of a migrant-labor network that produces nearly 70% of all the nation’s winter vegetables,
Immokalee sees its population swell to 40,000 in agricultural season. But economic development in Immokalee has
lagged behind the rest of Collier. Half of the residents live below the poverty line.
Compounding this issue are some staggering statistics:
70% of adults

48% of Adults

Approximately 70%

Low income and lack of education have created a vicious cycle of poverty in Immokalee. But a cycle that can be broken
with a commitment to fulfill the educational needs of Immokalee’s children. Working with donors and the community,
The Immokalee Foundation (TIF) can defeat the poverty that lives right in our own backyard.

THE SOLUTION
Programs
That Make a Difference
Take Stock in Children (TSIC): Mentors, Scholarships & Hope
For so many of Immokalee’s children, a post-secondary education is not an option. Students often abandon
education before they graduate from high school to help support their families in the agricultural fields or
packinghouses. Surrounded by so much poverty and hardship, it can be difficult to think that college, or even
leaving Immokalee, is a possibility. If these children are willing to dedicate themselves to learning, we believe
college or post-secondary training should be an opportunity for all Immokalee students.
The Immokalee Foundation brought Take Stock in Children (TSIC) to Immokalee in 2001 to achieve that
goal. Since then, the program has awarded $1.5 million in scholarships and provided one-on-one mentoring.
Qualified seventh-graders who successfully fulfill their required pledge to earn good grades, exhibit good
behavior, volunteer community service time and meet weekly with a mentor are awarded a full tuition
scholarship to any Florida state college, university or vocational school upon high school graduation.

John Henry, Naples, Florida
John has been a TIF board member
since 2006 and served as the Take
Stock In Children liaison to the
18-member TIF board for two years.
He mentors three Immokalee High
School students—all of whom
nominated him for the statewide
honor. John was formally recognized
during the program’s state
conference in Tallahassee in January
2012. Kerby Henry, one of the boys
John mentors, describes him as
a father figure who’s loved and
supported him. Another, Elijah Basile,
calls John a guardian angel who
helps him examine what the right
choices are for his life. And Elijah
Arreaga thanks him for his motivation
through tough times.
Career Development Program (CDP): Building Tomorrow’s Workforce
Students in Immokalee don’t often have the luxury to consider career path options. Their families’
pressing financial needs take priority. These pressures can eventually lead to a future of short-term
positions to make money rather than a focused, long-term career. Through the Career Development
Program, students enhance the professional skills necessary to become confident, productive and successful
citizens. CDP guides them through the process of career goal setting and attainment, bringing outstanding
career development services, best practices, educational career panels, job shadowing and internships together.
Career panels and industry tours increase awareness for students. The program also provides tuition and
scholarships, arranges job shadowing/internship and apprenticeship positions, evaluates students’ career
interest inventories and provides opportunities to attend career fairs. In 2012, we launched after-school
tutoring and continued to teach students employability skills, arrange parent meetings and provide tours of
schools that emphasize industry certifications.
For students who may need remediation due to FCAT, College Placement Test, ACT or Pert scores, our
Career Development Program helps them refine their academic skills. With after-school tutoring, they strive
to successfully reach ACT college readiness benchmarks.

College & Career Success (CS): Support through the College Years
Watching a child move on to college is one of the proudest moments in the life of any parent.
This is especially true of parents in Immokalee, where few adults hold a degree. Entering college
or post-secondary training is a truly momentous accomplishment. But making it to college is just the first
step. We need to ensure that students have the tools and support they need to complete their postsecondary goals with a degree in hand.
Our College and Career Success program provides ongoing academic advisement and mentorship for
students, helping them to set up individual academic plans that allow them to graduate from college
or post-secondary training. The program assists students as they navigate the complex world of financial aid
and helps them develop important life skills such as financial responsibility, time management and study
habits—skills that will benefit them now and throughout their lives.
“Without TIF, I really wouldn’t
know how to fund my
education. With this being my
senior year, TIF is helping me
become not only the first
person in my family to
graduate from college—TIF is
also transforming my goals
and dreams into reality.”
—Guilene Grefin, University of Central Florida
Immokalee Readers (IR): Literacy for Young Learners
s u ccess sto r y
Literacy is one of the key ingredients to a child’s success in our society. Recent studies have found
that children not reading at grade level by third grade are less likely to perform well in middle school, less
likely to graduate from high school and less likely to complete college.
erica gomez
Immokalee Readers is an intensive reading intervention program, targeting the lower 17% of readers from
Kindergarten through Third grade. This after-school program matches elementary students with high-school age
tutors for productive, enjoyable reading lessons. A Reading Specialist aligns lessons with Sunshine State
Standards with a goal that all children will read on grade level by third grade. Since many Immokalee students
use other languages at home, the additional English-language usage is especially important. Even the tutors
themselves have improved their overall reading proficiency and develop new skills and confidence mentoring kids.

I’m a senior at Immokalee High School.
My mother raised all four of us
children facing her own difficulties
and challenges. One of my brothers
graduated from Immokalee High
School and the other got his G.E.D, but
neither of them went to college. I will
be the first in my family to pursue a
post-secondary education and a
degree in Education. My experience
as a reading tutor at Eden Park
Elementary changed my life. It gave
me a tremendous desire and passion to
teach students and make a difference
in their lives. I’ve spent four years
helping kids in kindergarten, first and
second grade overcome struggles and
become better readers. And it helped
me grow into a better person, too.
This program has really motivated
and encouraged me to chase my
dream of becoming a collegeeducated teacher because now I
know for certain it is possible.

Charity Classic Celebration & Pro-Am Golf Tournament
In 2012, we hosted our sixth annual Charity Classic Celebration at The Ritz Carlton, Naples and
a Pro-Am golf tournament at Bay Colony Golf Club. This year’s events encouraged guests to follow TIF’s
“Pathways to Success” and highlighted our educational opportunities making dreams come true for
Immokalee’s youth. These events provide the majority of the funding to operate our student programs.
The Charity Classic Celebration provides opportunities to bid on silent auction items as well as Fund A Dream .
The Charity Classic Pro-Am Golf Tournament pairs 24 of the world’s greatest pro golfers with philanthropic
amateurs in a scramble format. The Immokalee Foundation students and participants had the opportunity to
play with pro greats, including George McNeil, Andy Bean, and Peter Jacobsen. The tournament alone raised
more than $300,000. Along with the Charity Classic Celebration, we raised more than $1.5 million.

Our capabilities for Immokalee’s Future
The Immokalee Foundation (TIF) was founded by Parker Collier and other concerned citizens of Collier
County, Florida in 1991 to address needs in the town of Immokalee. It began by raising funds to award grants
to Immokalee organizations and provided direct scholarships. In 2001, TIF began to provide its own scholarships
and mentoring through the Take Stock in Children program. Today, The Immokalee Foundation is a fully
operational, not-for-profit organization and provides direct services to the children of Immokalee.
Major programs:
• Take Stock in Children
• Career Development & After
School Tutoring
• College & Career Success
• Immokalee Readers
Since 2007, our leadership has decisively broadened our support to include additional private donors and corporate
partnerships. Rather than a benefactor and grantor, we have become a self-sustaining entity that seeks
funds for its own programs. Our major fundraising events are the Charity Classic Celebration and Pro-Am Golf
Tournament held each November and Inter-Club Challenge golf tournament held in the spring.
Committed to the educational needs and service gaps facing the children of Immokalee, The Immokalee
Foundation (TIF) changed its mission to offer college, post-secondary training, reading, out-of-school programs
and workshops designed to fulfill this community’s needs. Our dedication to provide education, empowerment and
hope is enhancing the lives of Immokalee’s next generation. These efforts provide the tools for today’s youth to find
direction and soar upward to educational and professional heights they never dreamt possible.

The New
Deanna Franks Learning Center
Our new building in Immokalee was made possible by the leadership gift of Barbara and George Franks and the generous
donors listed below. This state-of-the-art learning center, named in memory of Mr. Franks’ daughter, includes classrooms, a
conference room and office space, and a safe environment where Immokalee students can continue their journey down the
pathway to academic and career success. The new facility is located within walking distance of Immokalee Middle School,
Immokalee High School and the iTech Center, opening up a wider range of opportunities and accessibility to our students.
Thank you to all who helped make this new facility a reality!

I was born in Guanajuato Mexico and
lived there until I was six years old.
My father brought our whole family to
Florida. The language, environment,
my house, the people, the schools
were different from back home. The
hardest adjustment was the school.
Soon I overcame the language barrier.
But new barriers followed. I have three
older brothers. Two dropped out of
high school, but one graduated. I felt
sad and lonely being the only girl and
coping with my parents’ divorce.
Three years ago, I heard about
Immokalee Readers. For three years
as their tutor, the children slowly
brought smiles back to my face
because I knew I was contributing to
the future. And that I was offering them
help and support. Without this
opportunity from The Immokalee
Foundation, I wouldn’t have found
happiness again or pursued my dream
of helping others. I may have struggles
now with life, but I’m happy with my
accomplishments so far.

“One thing this foundation
gave me and my family is
hope. I can honestly say
that my siblings and I
never had a real meaning
of hope until The
Immokalee Foundation
became part of our lives.
I am eternally grateful.”
