*OPENING PRAYER
ALL:
Here we are God!
We come into your house this Sunday morning
praising your faithfulness,
giving thanks for your mercy,
seeking your joy.
Every song, old and new, is offered to you,
even as we lift the prayer Jesus teaches…
*THE LORD’S PRAYER
As translated by Parker Palmer
Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We
pray for your reign of peace to come, we pray that your good will be done,
Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, give it
to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, from
each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence beyond the evil of our days.
Come swiftly Mother, Father; come. For yours is the power and the glory
and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen.
*PASSING OF THE PEACE
Leader:
This is a place of peace, a place where all are welcome. Let us greet one
another as a sign of God’s peace and our shared friendship by saying,
“Peace be with you.”
People: And also with you.
You are invited to share greetings of welcome and peace with those around you.
All children and youth through 5th grade wishing to attend Sunday School
are invited to go to the Fellowship Hall during the passing of the peace.

THE GOSPEL LESSON
Luke 24:1-12
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven
miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had
happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went
with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What
are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking
5
sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only
stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these
days?’ He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of
Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and
how he was condemned to death and crucified. But we had hoped that he was the one to
redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took
place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early
this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that
they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who
were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not
see him.’
Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that
the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these
things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he
interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were
going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening
and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the
table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes
were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to
each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road,
while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to
Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were
saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what
had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of
the bread.
Friends, listen. God is still speaking!
Thanks be to God.

Community Arts Program (CAP)
To serve a diverse community by providing educational and
culturally-enriching experiences through the transforming power of the arts.
The CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble, comprised of fifteen students
from six Miami-Dade County schools, is part of the Coral Gables
Congregational UCC CAP Conservatory for the Arts Miami Jazz
Institute. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses Monday evenings, August
through May, in the Church’s Arts & Education Wing. The
experience is designed to sharpen sight reading, style, technique,
improv, rhythm, recording studio skill, college prep and career development through the
practical study and performance of jazz repertoire that spans the standards to newlycomposed works. Some of the CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble’s most noted highlights
over recent years include ten one-hour live radio shows on Miami’s “serious jazz” station,
WDNA 88.9 FM, three performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of its Essentially
Ellington, and opening for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Count Basie Orchestra,
Catherine Russell, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Sherman Irby Quintet, and Doc Severinsen.
In the fall through spring, a diversity of children and youth throughout Miami will again
be a part of CAP’s vibrant after-school Conservatory for the Arts. The experience includes
CAP Saturday Music Classes for in-depth one-on-one instrument instruction, music theory,
and performance practice. The curriculum also includes the CAP Records® label, designed
to generate projects for CAP students, exposing them to the art of studio musicianship and
recording production. CAP Records® has expanded its label to established performing
artists, most recently signing the renowned cellist Amit Peled for a 2017 release. The CAP
Conservatory for the Arts also offers its valuable performing ensembles for children and
youth, each designed to span the vast array of music styles and techniques: CAP Creative
Strings I, II, and III; Jazz PREP Band and, as you’ll hear this morning, the CAP ALLSTAR Jazz Ensemble.

BEER AND HYMNS
TODAY, April 30 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Duffy’s Tavern Party Room at 2108 SW 57th Avenue, Miami
What to expect? We gather young and old. We socialize. We sing. We wet our whistles
with the beverage of our choice. The only rule is we sing hymns 100 or more years old —
(except when we pull out a few folk songs and bits of pop songs. So in other words, there
are no rules!). We value tradition, but also silliness, mashups, and occasional superfermatas. We will mostly sing a cappella with bits of tambourine and electric piano. We
have pre-made booklets of hymns — and expect boisterous singing and swaying. Audience
participation is a must!
Please bring cash for the purchase of beverages (and/or available food) from Duffy’s– we
want to be good partners with our venue. (They do not take credit cards). Free root beer for
the kids and those who prefer a soda.

MOTHER’S DAY OFFERING OF LETTERS
Sunday, May 14 at 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall
Join us on this special day as we will hold a Mother’s Day Campaign Against Hunger.
Following worship, you are invited to participate in Bread for the World’s Annual Offering
of Letters, urging Congress to renew our federal government’s major child nutrition
programs including those for school meals and the WIC nutrition program for pregnant and
new mothers along with their small children. The value of the handwritten letter lies within
this language of time and care. Writing to someone, taking the time to craft each letter, to
address an envelope, — none of this goes unnoticed. A letter, before the content is even
read, has already said, “I care about this issue. It is special to me” And letters receive more
attention from their recipients than emails or phone calls. For more information about
Bread for the World and how we can play a part in helping to end hunger, visit
http://www.bread.org.
