VIP Tweets
Whilst Jamie Baulch and Andy Serkis
helped to raise awareness of our campaign
to protect tax credits, Baroness Floella
Benjamin OBE DL was busy bolstering our
calls to set aside apprenticeships for care
leavers. Elsewhere in the Twittersphere,
Elen Rivas and Jason Flemyng urged the
public to vote for Barnardo’s to benefit from
Microsoft’s #UpgradeYourWorld campaign
and participants at the annual White Hat
Rally in aid of Barnardo’s were treated to a
cheering on from the Twitter sidelines by
Jamie Baulch and Vicki Butler-Henderson.

Hilarity for charity
Comedians Jason Byrne, Joe Lycett,
Fred MacAulay, Patrick Monahan, Paul
Foot and Iain Stirling all performed
at our Big Barnardo’s Comedy Benefit
at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Jo
Caulfield was our host for the event,
which took place at the Assembly
Rooms. The audience were treated to
hilarious sets from the comics, who all
generously donated their time to support
the show, now in its fourth successful
year. Proceeds raised from ticket sales
go towards our work in supporting
vulnerable children and young people
across the UK.
Support for young people at the Houses
of Parliament
Our Vice-President Baroness Floella
Benjamin OBE DL hosted Barnardo’s
Parliamentary reception, which
was attended by a number of MPs
including Minister for Children and
Families Edward Timpson, and VIP
ambassadors Rosamund Pike, Andy
Serkis, Lorraine Ashbourne and
Nicola Roberts. Thanks to inspiring
young people who participated in
the event Barnardo’s was able to
underscore to the new parliament, the
value of training and job creation programmes for disadvantaged young people
who are often marginalised from existing work and training opportunities. Each
year, over 4.800 vulnerable young people are helped into quality training and jobs
thanks to Barnardo’s training and skills services across the UK.

New service pioneered
Barnardo’s 150th Anniversary
Barnardo’s is pioneering a new
service in Crystal Palace, London.
Opened by Baroness Floella
Benjamin OBE DL, The Triangle is
a community hub for families with
a social enterprise dimension and
has received a phenomenal response
from the community. In addition to
offering play areas for children all
revenues generated from the on-site
store and café are ploughed back into
helping vulnerable children in the
area through the hub.
2016 sees Barnardo’s mark a century and a half of always being there for children.
This milestone is a fabulous opportunity to reinvigorate public support and
understanding of Barnardo’s work. With an array of special 150th anniversary
activity planned, there is one particular initiative we are planning for September
2016 that is worth highlighting now. For 150 hours only we hope to host an
anniversary edition of a Barnardo’s store, crammed full of an eclectic range of
items donated by our VIP supporters – from your breakfast mugs to memorabilia
– anything that is re-sellable and we can identify as yours. Although exact details
are still being finalised, our plan is for this to take the form of a virtual pop up shop,
allowing as many members of the public as possible to access it. As well as raising
money, it also gives Barnardo’s a chance to generate awareness among a whole
new, younger audience to ensure we will still be able to be here in the future. We
do hope you are able to find something to donate to this unique experience or
indeed support another Barnardo’s 150th activity that we have planned.
Changing a life through fostering and adoption
A priority for Barnardo’s this year has been to
drive awareness of the urgent need for foster
carers. With a current shortfall of nearly 8,500
foster homes, the need for supportive and caring
environments for vulnerable children is
greater than ever.
Debbie Douglas, Lydia Bright and Melinda
Messenger generously lent their time to our
Change a Life campaign, and Melvyn Hayes and
Jo Joyner supported Fostering Fortnight. These
campaigns aimed to raise awareness of this vital
need across the UK, and we will be reinvigorating
our efforts again in January 2016.
In addition to an urgent fostering need, Barnardo’s supported National
Adoption Week with a campaign to highlight the frequency with which children
aged 4 or older struggle to find adoptive families. The ‘Too Old At 4’ campaign
attracted stellar support from Ambassador Jason Flemyng, Patsy Palmer, Alex
Beresford and Carol Smillie who all shared funny and heart-warming stories of
their children when they were aged four or tweeted in support of the campaign.
And of course, not forgetting
Thank you to Sharon Maughan

Experience Awards, Kazia Pelka who

Experience Awards in aid of Barnardo’s.
