PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
AMANDA PORTER
Welcome to the 2014 UELMA Conference:
I am excited to welcome you and hope you will leave the
conference refreshed and filled with new ideas and insights to
“Shake Up” your library and your approach to librarianship.
The conference is filled with professional development for you
in sessions, authors, poster sessions, vendors, and the
camaraderie of your peers. Enjoy, and please remember to
complete the conference survey at the end of the day so we
can continue to develop the conference to your needs.
It has been my privilege to serve this year as President of
UELMA. Becoming President this year was unexpected and
many changes to the UELMA board occurred this year with the
unrest in the field of librarianship, but UELMA has come away
still a strong organization that is prepared to grow and adapt to
the needs of the profession in Utah. The UELMA Newsletter
has a professional publication has been well received by each
of you. I encourage each of you to submit for publication and
share your experiences and expertise with your peers. Share
the publication with your administration to demonstrate the
professional development you are seeking after and employing
in your library. Please visit the UELMA website with details on
publication. Finally, thank you to the UELMA Board. This was
an unprecedented year of teamwork on the board and rallying
together to fight for libraries in Utah. I am honored to have
worked with each of you. Also, thank you for the support from
each of you. I enjoyed getting your feedback and comments
after the newsletters. Again, enjoy today!

Island: A Story of the Galapagos, Redwoods and Coral Reefs.
His other work includes illustrations for Where Do Polar Bears

Jason grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, and studied
illustration at Syracuse University. In 2001 he moved to New
York City and found a job at a children’s bookstore in Manhattan.
It was through co-workers at the store that Jason found his way
to his current publisher, Roaring Brook Press.
Jason’s latest book, Island: A Story of the Galapagos, won the
2013 Gryphon Award from the Center for Children’s Books. The
New York Times called it “a remarkable introduction to the

Ballard, Kathy
Resource Tools; How to Scaffold Lessons and Learning from 1st -6th Grade
(Elementary)
In this session I will model how I introduce and teach 10-20 minute lessons on how to
use reference materials. I will also show lessons on using an index and glossary
showing the scaffolding that takes place from year to year from a basic introductory
assignment, to helping students be able to navigate these reference tools on their
own.

Kathy was a patron of libraries for decades before she
decided that was what she wanted to be as a grown-up.

The Secondary Common Core Writing Standards require students to “write
arguments to support claims…using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient
evidence”. Not every teacher has had a college course on logic or persuasion.
School librarians can provide valuable support to teachers as they create and teach
lessons that meet these new requirements. This session will provide a short

used directly with students.

enhance your contribution to the library’s growth.
Gillman, Lori
Classroom Extension Activiites & the Library: A Perfect Match (Secondary)
(Session 1 Room 101)
Lori was a media specialist for a couple years at the
beginning of her 36 years in education. Now she is back in
the library and eager to combine the classroom experience
of teaching Graphic Design, Yearbook, and English with the
modern library. It’s a great adventure with amazing
opportunity to create and share!
PLC model main questions are: What do we want them to know? How will we know
when they know it? And What do we do with them when they know it? The third
question is the one that can be answered by the library media center. Working with
teachers, we can create fun and meaningful extension activities. This gives teachers
time to work with kids, and strengthens the purpose of the library. I will share
activities that we have created and used and my process in developing these
activities.
Griffiths, Alison

An outcome orientation: This session focuses on leaving behind our tendency to
dwell on, and solve the problems within our libraries. Instead, we will learn to place
our energies into the outcomes that we desire. An outcome orientation addresses the

their lives.

problem-solving while sharing ideas for incorporating research and multimedia
resources into lessons and projects for students

research question, thesis statement, outline, notecards, and a bibliography. It also
allows for a teacher to provide feedback and students to collaborate on a project.
This session will introduce to you all of these components and show how you can do
it at your school.
