Antigone Writing assignment
1. Begin by explaining tragedy in a “classical” sense. Most scholars discuss
four key components. Aristotle also outlines his definition of Greek
tragedy. In fact, Oedipus became the “model” for Aristotle’s “Critical
cannon” of tragedy (his definition). Present and explain those components
of tragedy that Aristotle believes are essential in arousing our “pity and
terror.” (catharsis)
2. Discuss specific characters in the play whose actions just don’t seem to
“fit” these classic definitions of tragedy. For example, does any character
not appear to have a true “tragic flaw”?
3. Incorporate the themes and subplots in your explanation why the
characters you choose might or might not be considered “tragic figures.”
