Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 30, 2011
The greatest among you must be your servant.
— Matthew 23:11
From the Pastor’s Desk
Mensaje del Parroco
We have resumed adoration! Thanks so much to
all those who have patiently awaited our air
conditioning repairs. I am most grateful to each and
every person who gives of their time to come for
adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. For those
who are not on the schedule, know that you are
always welcome to come to the chapel and pray,
Monday through Thursday,
from the end of Mass until
9:00 p.m., until 5:00 on Fridays,
and 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays.
This week we celebrate the
Solemnity of All Saints, the
feast of all those who have
reached salvation, yet have not
been officially canonized by the
Church, followed by All Souls,
when we pray for our dead. All Saints is a
Holy Day of Obligation; Masses are
Tuesday, November 1, at 8:10 a.m. and
6:30 p.m. in English, and 8:00 p.m. in
Spanish. The following day we will have an
All Souls day Mass at 12:00 noon in
English, and then a bilingual Mass at
5:30 p.m., at the Angleton cemetery,
followed by a blessing of the graves.
Thanks to all of you who bought over 15
cookbooks at the bazaar. The books were worth the
wait! Again, I thank Rita Hunter and Dana Ernst,
who worked so diligently on this project, as well as
all those who contributed. We got LOTS of recipes,
and I’m sure that everyone will find things that will
become new family favorites. They will be on sale,
at $20 each or two for $35, in the gathering area the
weekends of November 12-13 and 19-20. I already
know what my sisters will be receiving from me this
Christmas!
Fr. Maurice
¡Hemos reanudado la adoración! Muchas gracias
pena esperar Los libros! Una vez más, doy gracias a
Rita Hunter y Dana Ernst, quienes trabajaron tan
Holy Hour of Prayer for an increase in Vocations to the priesthood and religious life is scheduled every
First Friday. The next Holy Hour is set for this Friday, November 4, at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel. All are
welcome.
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
31 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Reflection by Deacon Luis Hernandez
Recently my wife Lina and I have been preparing
a young couple for marriage. As we were reviewing
the material to be presented, Lina told me that it did
not feel right that we were going to teach some
things that we really do not practice. The fact is that,
although Lina and I have been happily married for
over 35 years, we are not a perfect couple. My
response was that someone had to give this
preparation and that at least we could say that we are
not a very good example and to follow not what we
do but what we teach.
The Gospels of previous weeks told us about how
Jesus had been tested by the Scribes and Pharisees.
Today we hear Jesus’ opinion about them. They
believed to be an example for the people, and they
were, but in a way totally opposite to
what they imagined. Jesus does not
deny their authority, because they
“have taken their seat on the chair of
Moses,” but criticizes the way they
live because “they preach but they do
not practice.” This applies to all who
occupy any position of authority:
politicians, judges, teachers, etc. The
most effective way of teaching is to
practice what is taught.
It would seem that Jesus wants to
keep his followers from falling into
the same mistake, that his teachings be reduced to
words only, that the future leaders would resemble
the past ones. That is why he changes the concept of
authority for one of service. The apostles, their
successors, and indeed all of us who are baptized,
must evangelize following the recommendation of
Jesus: “The greatest among you must be your
servant.” The proper characteristic of a Christian is
not arrogance but humility. It is not enough to say
that we have faith, we must practice it.
Let us receive the word of God, “not as a human
word but, as what it really is, the word of God, which
is now at work in us who believe.”
Reflexión por Diacono Luis Hernandez
Recientemente mi esposa Lina y yo hemos estado

Ever Thought of Being a Reader at Mass?
A Lector Workshop is planned for Tuesday,
November 8, at 7:00 p.m.
“The Lord has given me a well-trained tongue, that I may
speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.” Is 50:4
The Ministry of Reader (Lector) is a vital role to the
full, conscious, active participation of the assembly’s
worship. The task of a lector is to read in such a way
that God’s people, gathered together for worship,
may best take the words of scripture to heart, mind
and spirit. Lectors, in a very real sense, become a
prophet-one who speaks for God. Therefore, while it
is a simple ministry, it is not simple in the sense that
it is easy to do well or can be done with little energy
or effort. If you are a lover of the word of God and
interested in delving more deeply into the mystery of
God’s presence in the word through the revealed
word and you have adequate reading skills, you are
invited to discern a call to serve in this ministry.
Please call the Parish Office to sign up for the
upcoming workshop, where the theology of this
ministry and the skills necessary to perform them
properly, will be addressed. Audition and practice
materials will also be distributed.

Baptisms: Preparations sessions are required for parents and godparents and a recognition Mass. Parents
should be registered in the parish and practicing Catholics. Call the parish office as early as possible during
pregnancy to pre-register for classes. Baptism will be set upon completion of the required classes.
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For individuals who are not baptized, baptized in another
denomination and interested in becoming Catholic, or baptized Catholics who never completed the sacraments
of initiation (Eucharist & Confirmation). This process leads to full communion in the Catholic Church.
First Reconciliation/First Communion: Enrollment in the sacrament preparation process is open to children
in grade 2 or older who are registered in the parish, faithfully attending Mass and enrolled in ongoing faith
formation programming. Classes include required parent & child sessions for both sacraments.
Confirmation: Enrollment in a 2-year preparation process is open to youth in grade 10 or higher who actively
practice the Catholic faith and are registered in the parish. Youth must be regularly attending Mass and ongoing
faith formation classes. An entrance interview may be required.
Marriage: By appointment only, 6-12 months in advance. Either one or both of the couple must be registered
in the parish. Marriage Preparation Program required. No weddings during Lent.
Holy Orders: If interested in the Priesthood or Diaconate, contact Fr. Maurice Restivo, C.S.B.
Death in the Family: Call the Parish Office before you make an appointment with the funeral home. We are
here to help you spiritually and emotionally.
If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office at 849-2421.
