AMERICAN LEGION POST 434 2013 ESSAY: 2013 Essay subject is “America the Land
of the Free”. What does this phrase mean to you, and what is its Guarantor for us and the
posterity of our Nation. Your essay should be between 250 and 500 words only. Over 500
words will incur a 10 point penalty as will essays under 250 words. Please see attached

Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is “Movin & Groovin” to the tune of transit. Write a 1,000

Military Spouse and Dependent
Educational Scholarships
Sponsored by MCAS Miramar Officers’ Wives’ Club
PURPOSE
To recognize and award educational scholarships to military dependents who wish to pursue
undergraduate or graduate studies or professional certificates.
ELIGIBILTY
Spouses or Dependent Children of any active duty or reserve U.S. Military personnel currently
attached to MCAS Miramar.

Spouses or Dependent Children of a retired or deceased U.S. Military member who was
attached to MCAS Miramar at the time of retirement or death.
CRITERIA
This is a merit-based scholarship that considers academic merit, leadership abilities, community
service, and extracurricular activities. A panel of impartial judges makes the selection on a
point-based system. Applicant anonymity is preserved during the selection process to ensure
fairness.
CONDITIONS
Scholarship monies shall be paid only to accredited colleges, universities, junior colleges,
community colleges, technical/vocational schools, or certificate programs for the 2013 – 2014
academic year.
Service Academy appointments and those receiving full tuition scholarships shall be excluded
from participation.

BONITA VISTA HIGH PTSA SCHOLARSHIP: Scholarships are available to graduating
seniors at BVH in good standing as PTSA members. Scholarship is for use at an accredited
college, university, community college, trade, or technical school. This is a scholarship to
recognize volunteer service in the school and community; there is no grade point average
restriction or requirement. Applications are attached or come to the counseling center for an
application.

UT YOUNG LATINO JOURNALISM SCHOLARS PROGRAM
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide Latino high school students from throughout San Diego County the opportunity to
participate in the U-T Young Latino Journalism Scholars program. The students selected will be
able to learn about new journalism and civic engagement and have their work published online
and in the U-T with the ultimate purpose of reporting the news in San Diego County from a
bilingual/bicultural Latino perspective
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
During the summer mentoring program, the chosen scholars will get a taste of what it's like to
have an actual job in a media company. Each Scholar will be paid for participating in the
program and have an opportunity for a $5,000 scholarship provided by the U-T at the end of the
program. Up to 10 students will be chosen. The program will run June 17 through July 25,
2013.
Eligibility
Students must be current high school sophomores, juniors or seniors and at least 16 years old.
Applicant must have a legal right to work in the U.S.
Journalism experience is not required but students should have an interest in journalism,
writing, media and content and a strong civic leadership quality.
Application process
Selection of Scholars will be based on grades, community service and extracurricular activities.
Application deadline is April 24, 2013.
Eligible candidates will be interviewed in mid- to late May.
Scholars will be asked to return next summer as volunteer mentors
Students must submit:

Two letters of recommendation from a high school official, teacher or other community
member (other than family member) who has known you more than one year. Each letter should
be addressed to the UT and should include specific comments on your future potential and
community/school involvement.
Personal statement: A one-page statement that describes you, your community involvement and
why you want to be part of the U-T Journalism Fellow program.

Program details
The program will be held at the U-T from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Each student will be assigned a mentor in the newsroom.
Students will work on in-depth group projects and individual projects.
Students will have opportunities to contribute to the U-T's different platforms: U-T San Diego
newspaper, Enlace, Vida Latina, online web content, social media.
End of program luncheon will be held July 25.

CHULA VISTA POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAQUE: Scholarship being offered to a
graduating senior to cover the cost of completing an Associate Degree program or a transfer
program to a university from Southwestern College. The individual must live in the Chula
Vista area, attend one of the Chula Vista high schools and must attend Southwestern College
after graduation. The scholarship if primarily for registration fees for the college. Please see
Mrs. Tovar in the counseling center for an application.

BRAD FOWLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:
On behalf of the San Diego Hall of Champions/San Diego Sports Commission, I would like to
inform you of the Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship Fund, a unique scholarship opportunity

available to your students. I encourage you to share this with coaches, teachers and counselors
who can open a door for students by encouraging them to apply for this scholarship.
The Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship Fund offers a one-year, $5,000 scholarship to five high
school seniors in San Diego County. The nominee must have demonstrated an ability to
overcome personal obstacles associated with drugs or alcohol, a strong commitment to athletics
and a desire to continue personal growth and development through higher education.
The following is a description of the scholarship, nomination criteria and submission process.
Description:
One-year scholarship for $5,000 for the school year September 2013 - June 2014
Eligible expenses include college tuition, books and on-campus housing
Nomination Criteria:
High school senior who will enroll in either a two- or four-year college
Has overcome personal obstacles and troubles in life associated with drugs or alcohol
Athletic achievement
Leadership ability
Academic achievement
Strong commitment to setting and reaching life goals

CHEN FOUNDATION 2013 SCHOLARSIP PROGRAM: $20,000 IN SCHOLARSHP
AWARDS AVAILABLE. The CHEN foundation is focused on helping economicallychallenged youth fulfill their dreams of obtaining a higher education. The scholarship is
renewable, allowing scholarships recipients to receive an additional $2,000 award after their
first quarter/semester of college if they maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and active involvement in
community service. To be eligible, must be a senior who resides in California, Plan to attend a
CSU as 1st year college student in the Fall of 2013, Plan to major in math, engineering or a
science, have a minimum cumulative unweighted high school GPA of 3.0, have a household
income at or below “low income” based on the California State Low income level. For more

NATIONAL NAVAL OFFICERS ASSOCIATION:
The National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) San Diego Chapter is proud to announce
$3,000 in scholarship awards (three $1000 scholarships) is now available for high school
seniors graduating in 2013. Two scholarship programs are available. Please share this
information with your graduating seniors.
1. NNOA San Diego Chapter Dollars for Scholars Merit Scholarship—One $1,000 award
available
Eligibility requirements:
•
Student must be a high school senior graduating from a high school located in San Diego
County, CA.
•
Student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
•
Student must be accepted or planning to enroll full-time in the fall of 2013 in an
undergraduate program of studies leading to a Bachelors Degree at an accredited college or
university. Funding for the scholarship will take place only after proof of enrollment is
received.
•
Student must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 based on a
4.0 scale.

Silver NNOA (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Scholarship Two $1,000 awards available
Eligibility requirements:

Senior in high school who has been accepted as a full time student in a Tier 1 or Tier 2
degree program (see attached list)
•
U.S. Citizen
•
Minimum overall GPA 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
•
Recommendation from one high school STEM teacher
•
Active involvement in community/civil organizations, student government, religious
organizations, sports, mentoring, tutoring events, or similar are highly encouraged.
•
Participation in NNOA partner organizations to include JROTC, NJROTC, NSBE,
BDPA, What it Takes, and Patriot Technology Training Center organizations is encouraged and
will be given additional weight.

Excellent moral character and reputation
•
