Alex Campen Knoxville, TN Joseph Alexander Campen, age 71, of Knoxville and Lenoir City, died April 29, 2015, after a courageous and valiant struggle with multiple myeloma. Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Alex was a hardworking entrepreneur who was passionate about his family and his business. He began his career as an enthusiastic salesman, like his father before him, and worked for both Federal Pacific and GTE Sylvania before relocating to Florida and opening his own business. In 1979, Alex and his family returned to his hometown of Knoxville, where he founded EMR Associates. He later formed Vol Power in 1982. Alex insisted on running the businesses in accordance with his moral principles and strong Christian beliefs. He and his wife, Trish, worked tirelessly to build EMR Associates into one of the premier manufacturers' representative firms in the Southeast. He and Trish were a great team in business and in life. A '61 graduate of Central High School, he then graduated from UT Knoxville in 1965 with a B.S. in Industrial Management. At UTK, he pledged Sigma Chi fraternity and was an outstanding athlete, playing on the UT varsity baseball team. An avid outdoorsman, he loved boating on the water with his children and grandchildren, and taught many nieces and nephews how to water ski. He always had a twinkle in his eye, and his sense of humor kept everyone laughing. He was generous with his time and with his resources and was endlessly patient with the gaggle of children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, whom he taught to ski, play baseball, and fish; and whom he regaled with stories and jokes amid their peals of laughter. He was the former finance chairman of St. James Episcopal Church, and later became a member of Apostles Anglican Church. Preceded in death by parents Leo A. (Poley) and Mattie Campen; brother, Richard L. Campen and sister-in-law, Marianne Bowyer House. Survivors include loving wife, Patricia Bowyer Campen; sons, Scott Campen (Lara), and Mark Campen (Emily), of Knoxville, Stephen Ollard (Lindsay), of St. Simons, GA, and Ryan Ollard (Carrie), of Pell City, AL; and daughter, Pam Ollard (Holly), of Knoxville. Alex was blessed with nine grandchildren, Alexandria, Andrew, Parson, and Phoebe Campen, Chloe, Wyatt, Gabriella, Camille, and Isla Ollard. He also leaves behind sister, Pat Campen Medley (Mark), of Knoxville; and brother-in-law, Frank Bowyer (Cathy), of Cherry Log, GA; and uncle, Glen Hauser, of LaPorte, CO; aunt, Virginia Long, of Chattanooga; and beloved aunt, Cebe Taylor, of Ft. Collins, CO. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Drs. Bruce Avery, Saji Eapen, Guido Tricot, and their staffs; and Tiffany Sipe for their loving and steadfast care. A service of Thanksgiving will be held on Sunday, May 3, at 4:00 p.m. at Apostles Anglican Church, with the Rev. Jack King and the Rev. Laird Bryson officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall.
