The construction began under the reign of Philip Augustus in 1204 close to three centuries before Christofer Colombus discovered America. The construction took some seven centuries to complete. Originally used as a palace of the kings of france, it became a museum in 1793 and is now, one of the largest museums in the world. 02 ROYAL BRIDGE Paris has 34 bridges across the seine river. The pont Royal or royal bridge is one of the oldest. The story goes that it was built thanks to the money of the Sun King, Louis XIV who, in the meantime, decided the construction of the palace of Versailles. ORSAY MUSEUM Along the bank, on your left , you cannot fail the impressive façade of the Orsay station built in 1900 for the world exhibition. This former railroad station has been converted into an extraordinary museum : the Orsay museum: dedicated to the XIX th century art production. Impressionnist masterpieces can be seen there.. 03 04 THE TUILERIES In a line with the Louvre, the Tuileries garden, is one of the most elegant park in Paris. In the middle Ages, a tilery stood on that site which explains the name of this spot. CONCORDE BRIDGE A little further on is the Concorde bridge, built with the stones of the Bastille demolished during the 1789 french revolution. This bridge leads, to our left, to the Bourbon Palace where the members of the parlement sit. 05 ALEXANDRE III BRIDGE Facing you now is the Alexander the third bridge, the most luxurious bridge in our capital. It was built to commemorate the franco-russian alliance at the end of the last century. In the middle, there’s a representation of Saint Petersbourg and the river Neva. 06 07 CHAILLOT PALACE In a distance, at the top of the hill in front of us, you can see the Chaillot Palace ; this large building houses some very interesting museums like the Man kind museum and the Navy museum. AMERICAN CHURCH There is in Paris, along the river an american church which is on your left ; next to the church, is the american college built in 1931. 08 09 ALMA BRIDGE Our next bridge has on its right side the popular sculpture called “le zouave”. Parisians watch the level of the river on this statue. In 1910 during the great floods the poor man was recovered by the water up to his neck. 10 DEBILLY FOOTBRIDGE After passing Debilly footbridge we discover the Tokyo palace which is worth visiting for the Paris modern art museum and the photography museum. 8 11 EIFFEL TOWER The Iena bridge leads to the left to the Eiffel tower, one of the monument symbolizing Paris the best. Built in two years, the tower was the most important monument of the 1889 World fair. Recognized as the masterpiece of Mr Eiffel, the tower is more than 1 000 feet high and weighs 6 400 tons. The monument is composed of 15 000 metallic sections held together by 2 500 000 rivets. The tower has to be painted every 7 years and the restauration needs no less than 45 tons of paint. The Eiffel tower has three floors with shops, restaurants and from the top you can get a superb view. The tower is open every day till 11 p.m. 12 BIR-HAKEIM BRIDGE Before making a U-turn, another Gustave Eiffel’s realisation : the Bir-Hakeim bridge crossing the swans island. At the end of the island stands a statue of liberty offered to Paris by the american community living in the capital. 13 INVALIDES BRIDGE The Invalides bridge which was built in 1856 celebrates the battles of Napoleon I er to its left you can see the huge cupola of the great Palace built for the 1900 world fair. Today the Grand Palais is taken up an exhibition center and houses the discovery palace. 14 ALEXANDRE III BRIDGE The Alexandre III bridge with in its center the arms of Paris leads to our right to the Invalides Palace where the tumb of Napoleon can be seen. On your right is the Orsay quay with the foreign office. 15 CONCORDE SQUARE At your left hand side, please have a look at the Concorde square especially remarkable for its size and harmony. It was designed for the king Louis the XV and was named after him. At the center of the square, the obelisk brought from Egypt in 1836. It is surronded by eight monumental statues symbolizing the major cities of France. At the far end of the square it is the ministry of navals affairs and the Crillon Hôtel. During the revolution the guillotinne was set up there the king, the queen Marie Antoinette, Danton and many others were beheaded in this very square. 16 LEGION HONNOR PALACE On your right, next to the Orsay museum, is the legion of Honnor Palace built during the XVIII century. It has become the legion of honnor museum inaugurated by Napoleon I. the legion of honor is the highest distinction in France. 17 VOLTAIRE QUAY To the right of the Carrousel bridge is the elegant Voltaire quay. In the large white house, the famous philosopher Voltaire died in 1778. It is composed of five academies of which the most famous is the french academy. 30 AUSTERLITZ BRIDGE In front of us, in the Paris Eastside, the Austerlitz bridge leading to the right to the botanic garden. We turn around now for another superb view of Notre Dame cathedral. 20 PALAIS CONTI The Conti Palace, former national Money building which is now a museum dedicated to the medals. 31 LAMBERT RESIDENCE Just after the Sully bridge,on your left hand side, you can admire one of the most elegant mansion of Paris. The Lambert residence is paticularly notable for its architecture, a masterpiece of XVIIth century ; anciently the residence of J.J.Rousseau, Voltaire and recently Michèle Morgan.. 21 CITY ISLAND The City island on your left is the craddle of Paris. The first settlers, the Parisii, set up there they felt more secure, in the III century B.C. At the beginning of the island there is the Vert Galant Square. In the center of Pont Neuf the statue of Henri IV. QUAI DES ORFÈVRES On your left, you can see the huge façade of the Low Court. and the “Quai des Orfèvres” famous for its police investigations. 22 23 SAINT-MICHEL BRIDGE The Saint Michel bridge leads to the Latin quarter, the intellectual center with numbers of colleges and universities like the Sorbonne. This place is named the Latin quarter because latin was, formely, the official language for teaching. POLICE HEADQUARTERS On your left, the police headquaters and the Petit Pont, the smallest bridge in Paris. Our next bridge, the “Pont au double” was named at the double fare the Parisians had to pay to get in and get out of the island. 24 25 NOTRE-DAME The view of Notre Dame cathedral from the Seine river is really romantic. the construction began in 1163 and took more than two centuries. The towers, a fine example of primitive gothic style, are over 200 feet high. In the right one, there is a bell, nicknamed Emmanuel which weighs 13 tons. The cathedral is a jewel of gothic art. More than 9000 people can fit into this cathedral. The magnificent facade with the twin towers is decorated with numerous sculptures and gargouilles. From the south front we can admire the splendid rose wich is 40 feet by diameter. ARCHIBISHOP’S BRIDGE The archibishop’s bridge, the lowest bridge in Paris with to its left the deportation memorial. 26 27 SAINT LOUIS ISLAND The Saint Louis island is a very elegant place to live, a residential area containing many historical residences going back centuries.. TOURNELLE BRIDGE In front of us, the Tournelle bridge with the statue of Sainte Geneviève, the patron Saint of Paris. To the right of the bridge, the famous Tour d’Argent restaurant where the table fork was used for the first time in the XVI th century. 28 29 SULLY BRIDGE To the right of the Sully bridge the Arab Institut and then the Saint Bernard quay with an open air museum dedicated to the modern art just behind the faculty of sciences. 10 32 MARIE BRIDGE On the opposite bank, the Marsh quarter “le Marais” with the Sens residence dating from the middle ages. The Pont Marie is the romantic bridge and the tradition when we pass under , it is to make a wish then a kiss. 33 LOUIS-PHILIPPE BRIDGE Louis-Philippe bridge built in 1857. To its right Saint Gervais Saint Prothais church with the oldest organs of Paris (1606). 34 CITY HALL Paris is subdivided into 20 districts. To your right you can see the City Hall, in front of it, the statue of Etienne Marcel the first maire of Paris in the XIV th century. 35 CLOCK TOWER On your left the tribunal of commerce of Paris built by Haussmann. Following the conciergerie with the clock tower. At the bottom of the tower, the oldest public clock of Paris. It still works even if it is more than 600 years old. it has been restored only three times « 36 THE CONCIERGERIE The Conciergerie, dating back to the Middle Ages, it is an important historical place in Paris. The old waterside gallery of the palace of the king became a jail during the revolution The queen Marie-Antoinette spent two months here before beeing beheaded in October 1793. 37 NEW BRIDGE And so, the Pont Neuf, the new bridge, despite its name it is the oldest bridge in Paris dating from the XVII th century. At the time of its construction it was the first built without houses on it. At the fronton of the bridge, you can see many different facing statues symbolizing the friends and ministers of Henry IV. 38 LA SAMARITAINE To the right of Pont Neuf one of what use to be the biggest departement store of Paris : The Samaritaine.
