EXCHANGE OF CULTURE (GHANAIAN FOODS) In Ghana, we have a lot of local foods such as; 1. Fufu, 2. Banku 3. Wakye, 4. Kenkey 5. Gari and Beans etc. 1. FUFU Fufu is prepared using cassava and plantain. This food belongs to the people of Ashanti they originated it. It is now the most popular food in Ghana. Fufu is eaten with soup such as palm nut soup, groundnut soup, light soup etc. DO YOU HAVE SUCH SOUPS? THIS IS FUFU THE FUFU IS IN A TYPICAL GHANAIAN BOWL MADE WITH CLAY CALLED, APUTOYOWA FUFU IN A PLASTIC BOWL WITH GROUNDNUT SOUP You can people eating fufu with light soup and chicken HOW FUFU IS PREPARED As you can see, fufu is prepared by pounding boiled cassava and plantain in a mortar with pestle. The ladies are pounding fufu. BANKU Banku is a food prepared using corn and cassava dough. This food belongs to the people of Ashanti and Central regions. They originated it. It is now eaten by all in Ghana. Banku is eaten with okro stew, Pepper with fish such as tilapia etc, HOW TO PREPARE BANKU As you can see, this woman is preparing BANKU by steering mixture of corn and cassava dough in a locally made silver on a typical Ghanaian stove normally called Coalpot PEOPLE EATING BANKU These children are eating Banku and are very happy This man is happily eating Banku with Okro stew&meat WAKYE Wakye is a food prepared using rice and beans. Talia, gari, meat or fish is added to Wakye. This food belongs to the people of northern regions, they originated it. It is now eaten by all in Ghana. KENKEY Kenkey is a food made from corn. In Ghana we have two ethnic groups namely; Fanti and Ga; they originated kenkey so we have fante kenkey and Ga kenkey. Kenkey is eaten with stew, palm nut soup or light soup etc. Kenkey can be used to prepare food called ice kenkey (like porridge) where we can add milk and sugar to it. KINDS OF KENKEY IN GHANA Fante kenkey From the people of central region Ga kenkey From the people of Greater Accra region Ga kenkey with fish and pepper How Ga kenkey is prepared GARI AND BEANS This food is prepared using gari and beans. Gari and beans food is originated from the people of Ashanti and now eaten by all people of Ghana. Fried plantain and fish can be added. WE HAVE COME TO THE END OF LEARNING OF FOODS IN GHANA EXCHANGE OF CULTURE (GHANAIAN LANGUAGES) GHANAIAN LANGUAGES In Ghana, we have about 49 languages but 9 are taught in schools. As with many ex-colonies in Africa, the official language of Ghana is the English language. Nine languages have the status of government-sponsored languages to be taught in schools in Ghana. The Languages that are taught in schools are: 1. Akan: Belongs to the people of Ashanti and Central region (fante) 2. Ewe: Belongs to the people of Volta Region 3. Dagomba or Dagbani: Belongs to the people of Dagomba and Dagbani (Northern region) 4. Dangme: Belongs to the people of Dangme (Northern region) 5. Dagaare: Belongs to the people of Dagaare (Northern region) 6. Nzema: Belongs to the people of Nzema 7. Ga: Belongs to the people of Ga in Greater Accra region (the capital city of Ghana is Accra) 8. Gonja: Belongs to the people of Gonja (Northern region) 9. Kasem: Belongs to the people of Kasem (Northern region) Akan has two literary dialects, Twi and Fante. Akan is the most popular and easy Language to learn. Twi language is the most popular language in Ghana and everyone can speak it. Some twi words&meanings We say “AKWAABA” meaning “WELCOME” to visitors. We say WO HO TESEN? meaning HOW ARE YOU?. Then response; ME HO YE meaning I AM FINE. ALL THE 9 LANGUAGES ARE EXAMINABLE AT JHS 3, BECE LEVEL (YEAR 9 – STATE EXAMS) WE HAVE COME TO THE END OF LEARNING OF LANGUAGES IN GHANA EXCHANGE OF CULTURE (GHANAIAN CLOTHES) In Ghana we have clothes such as; kente batakari fugu slit and kaba etc. 1. Kente cloth The most expensive cloth in Ghana is kente which originated from Ashanti region. BONWIRE is a town where kente is produced. Kente is worn for festivals, weddings, parties etc. Kente store BILL CLINTON IN KENTE CLOTH USA President wearing kente cloth The former president of USA, Bill Clinton visited the president of Ghana and he was given a kente cloth to wear. USA former President, BILL CLINTON in KENTE CLOTH PEOPLE WEARING KENTE CLOTH These people wore kente on SPECIAL DAYS This woman used KENTE as her weeding dress Ladies in kente cloth A man & woman used KENTE CLOTH for their weeding 2. FUGU cloth Fugu is a cloth worn by the people of Northern part of Ghana 3. BATAKARI cloth Batakari is a cloth worn by the people of Northern part of Ghana 4. SLIT AND KABA Slit and kaba is a cloth worn by the people Ashanti and central regions of Ghana. ASHANTI KINGDOM (FESTIVAL) In Ghana we have one King called Osei Tutu II. He is the King of the Ashantis. Ashanti Kingdom has a rich culture and history. The British came to Ghana then called Gold Coast with the aim to trade with us and colonised part of Ghana in 1800. The Ashantis battled with British from 1800 to 1900. The British defeated the Ashantis in 1901 and started colonising entire Ghanaians till 1957. Ghana had her independence from the British in 6th March, 1957. WE WILL LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT QUEEN ELIZABETH ASHANTI KING DRESS IN GOLD & KENTE CLOTH DURING AKWASIDAE FESTIVAL WE HAVE COME TO THE END OF LEARNING OF CLOTHES IN GHANA. The King of Ashanti is in gold and kente cloth during a festival called Akwasidae. Kings and Chieves are carried in Palanquins to go round the city or community. Ashanti region is for the King of Ashanti. HOW GHANAIANS NAME THEIR CHILDREN NAMING CEREMONY Naming ceremony is important in Ghanaian culture. Ghanaians have a unique way of naming their children. Ghanaians name their children after the day the child is born. Children are given names when they are 40 days old. CHILD BORN ON; MONDAY (Girl) is called Adwoa. Boy is call Kojo. TUESDAY (Girl) is called Abena. Boy he is call Kwabena WEDNESDAY (Girl) is called Akua. Boy he is call Kwaku THURSDAY (Girl) is called Yaa. Boy is call Yaw FRIDAY (Girl) is called Afia. Boy is call Kofi. SATURDAY (Girl) is called Ama. Boy is call Kwame SUNDAY (Girl) is called Akosua. Boy is call Akwasi I hope you know the day you were born so you can know your name if you were to be a Ghanaian. If you come to Ghana you will be called according to the day you were born.
