The Dorothy Klausing Bentley Memorial Scholarship The Dorothy Klausing Bentley Memorial Scholarship for BCSS is offering three $500 scholarships to Berks County students planning to attend a two year or four year college or graduate program. Applicants must be a direct relative of a breast cancer survivor and demonstrate financial need. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2014. For more info visit our website: www.bcssberks.org B C S S - To u c h i n g L i v e s 2 0 1 3 Your support in 2013 has made all of the following possible: Pink Power Night Support Groups In 2013 138 women sought support at one or more monthly Pink Power Nights, with an average of 35 women attending each month. BCSS Comfort Bags In 2013, BCSS supplied 236 Comfort Bags filled with hope and information for a woman's breast cancer journey. Since 2006, 1828 Comfort Bags have been put into the hands of a breast cancer survivor. The bag connects women to Berks County's breast cancer community. Support Group for Newly Diagnosed Women A three week support group designed for women who have been diagnosed within the past 6 months runs every spring and fall. Trained volunteers facilitate. In 2013, 22 women attended. El Poder del Rosado More than 300 women attended a luncheon and heard a panel of experts talk about breast cancer. Health care providers were available to give information and share resources. This was BCSS's first event for Spanish speaking women. Intimacy After Cancer Presenting information to survivors of all kinds of cancers about intimacy. A frank discussion on this topic was lead by experts in women's healthcare. BCSS is one of only a very few places to hear a program of this kind. BCSS 2013 Pink Power Night Conference 700 women shared an uplifting evening in Oct. and heard the latest news about breast cancer treatment. Attendees were able to talk directly with experts in breast health who answered questions. Support Line Trained volunteers who are breast cancer survivors were available 7 days a week to provide comfort and information. Both telephone support and online support are available. BCSS Director & Office Volunteers Our office receives 500 inquiries from women each year. BCSS assists these people with: - questions and concerns about a breast cancer diagnosis - access to health care for those without insurance - resources and services in our community - emotional support at a stressful time Free Prosthesis BCSS has helped more than 14 women who needed prostheses, mastectomy bras, and wigs in 2013. FORCE - Partnering with BCSS, FORCE held 3 meetings at the BCSS office attended by people who are affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. This partnership included presentations by genetic nurses from both St. Joseph Medical Center and Reading Hospital. Health Fairs and Community Events - BCSS offered information and resources to more than 1000 attendees at events in Berks County.
