H.6.4.20 Compare the area of the United States before and after the Louisiana Purchase Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish): (_____/1 point) Students will gain a general understanding of the Louisiana Purchase and its impact on the United States after today’s lesson. Students will watch the School House Rock video “Elbow Room” (linked above) 2. Topic of Louisiana Purchase will be introduced by the instructor reading aloud from the text. 3. Instructor will find stopping points to have class discussions. 4. Students will view on the Smart Board a before and after photo of the results of the Louisiana Purchase. 5. Instructor will lead class in a discussion of the United States before and after the Louisiana Purchase was made. 6. To enhance the lesson, the instructor will complete an Inspiration web with the class modeling the before and after results of the lesson topic. Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met): (_____/1 point) Students will participate in class discussion and turn in completed web when exiting class. A Brief Description of the Entire Lesson: (_____/5 points) Today’s lesson will begin by showing the School House Rock video, “Elbow Room.” Students will then be introduced to the topic of the Louisiana Purchase. The instructor will read the section of this topic from the textbook, stopping for discussion throughout the read. After reading and discussing the section, the instructor will provide a before and after territorial map photo on the Smart Board for the class to visually see the effects of the Louisiana Purchase. To further enhance this lesson, the instructor will complete an Inspiration web with the class, labeling the before and after results, and filling them in as she goes, using the Smart Board/computer. Students will also have a printed blank copy of the web to complete during class with the instructor.
