DOUBLE BAY WATCH A REGULAR NEWSLETTER OF THE DOUBLE BAY MEN’S BOWLING CLUB COMMITTEE -- Vol. 3 No.6, June, 2006 EDITOR: MIKE GOLLAND DESPITE TOP GRADE DISAPPOINTMENT OUR BEST PENNANT SEASON DOUBLE Bay Men’s Bowling Club, sponsored by Bradfield & Prichard, has had its most successful pennant season with one team qualifying for the 2006 BCiB State Finals in August and four others playing for Zone 11 titles this weekend (June 3-4). This in contrast to last season when none of the club’s six teams finished better than second in the Zone sections. But the current jubilation was short-lived when the Grade 1 team’s disappointing season continued as it failed by 18 shots against Matraville at Kensington on May 27 in the Zone 11 relegation play-off. The club’s Bowls Administrator, James Cook (pictured), who is also chairman of selectors, told Double Bay Watch that the other results were “most pleasing” and were a tribute to the “commitment to the pennant teams by the vast majority of players”. “I doubt if any other club in Sydney, or New South Wales for that matter, would have had such a successful season,” Cook said. “Hopefully the teams can continue their winning formula in the upcoming section finals and make it to the State finals later this year.” CONTINUED PAGE 2 Double Bay Bowling Club Proudly Sponsored For an obligation free market appraisal Contact Bob Guth 9327 3744 or 0403 585 585 Best pennant results FROM FRONT PAGE The Grade 7 team won Zone 11’s one section competition and will go directly into the State play-offs against the other 15 Zone Grade 7 champions at Wentworthville Leagues Club on the Bank Holiday weekend, August 5-7. ZONE 11 FINALS, JUNE 3 In the combined Zones 11, 12 and 13 competition the Grade 2 unit finished second in Section 2 (10 games and one bye) and will be one of two Zone 11 clubs competing in a four-team play-off to determine the Zone champion. The team will have the tough task of meeting the Section 1 winning team, Coogee at Hillsdale at 9am with the winners playing the winners of the other semifinal (Alex v Waverly) at 1pm. The same applies to the Grade 3 team, which headed Section 2 after 10 matches (plus one bye) and plays off at 9am against the second-placed Section 1 team Leichhardt at Hillsdale with the winner playing at 1pm against either Maroubra or Kensington. In Zone 11 the Grade 4 (Section 2) unit lost only two of its 10 games and had a six point margin over its nearest rival. In the Zone final it plays Section 1 top team, Western Suburbs Leagues, at Greenlees at 12.30pm The Grade 5 combination topped Section 1 with eight wins and a four-point advantage over the second team. It comes up against Section 2 winners Greenlees Park at Leichhardt (12.30pm) The Grade 6 team was close to top spot throughout the season, but two late losses sent it back to third in the section league table. RELEGATION BATTLE LOST The Grade 1 team battled throughout the season against top-flight opposition in the combined Zones and scored only three wins from its nine matches. It did not play the postponed first round fixture against St John’s Park when both clubs had players competing in the Australian titles in Melbourne as the result would have had no bearing on the team’s final placing in its section. The team’s hopes of a “reprieve” from relegation in the play-off against Matraville on a slow Kensington BC green on Saturday, May 27, failed to materialise when it lost all three rinks by 18 shots (58-40) and now faces the drop from top grade. The club’s chances of retaining Grade 1 status next season depends on the Grade 2 team, which can gain promotion if it wins the Zone 11 title this weekend at Hillsdale. Many of the team has been playing A-grade pennants with the (defunct) Dover Heights and Rose Bay Clubs. They cannot recall a period, except in the mid-1990s when there was no Grade 1 pennant team. Rabkin, the former South African, who now lives in Israel, was in Australia to compete at the Australian Indoor Championships, but his call at Double Bay concerned next month’s Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIG) lawn bowls event. which Double Bay will host from July 2=10. As president of the Israeli Lawn Bowls Association, Rabkin, was keen to learn all the details of the MAIG lawn bowls program from Rosen Chairman, John Rosen (right) welcomes Jeff and Platus, who are involved in Rabkin to Double Bay BC the organising of the MAIG lawn bowls tournament. Administrator’s new roles JAMES Cook, the club’s administrator and development officer, will now take over some of the responsibilities of the men’s club bowls secretary. In particular he will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the men’s bowls club with particular emphasis on the conduct of the Monday and Wednesday intra-club competitions. He will have the “backup” of current bowls secretary, Harry Stein and secretary, Peter Goldman, as well as former bowls president, Eddie Fingret. CORRECTION: Last month’s issue of Bay Watch incorrectly named John Rosen as a member of the team, when in fact it was Jack Stern who played the “middle man”. WHEN ever-smiling Harry Gutman (pictured above) was congratulated on reaching his 83rd birthday (April 24) during the Wednesday afternoon tea break , there was one fact that went unnoticed. During that afternoon’s play Harry bowled three consecutive touchers, with the third resting on the jack. Life saver tells how to save a life KNOWLEDGE of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) can save someone’s life, Double Bay members were told by an expert during a recent 45-minute session in the club house. More than 20 members attended a special “resuscitation” lecture by Paul McIvor, (pictured right) captain of North Bondi Surf Club. Organiser of the function, (Dr) Abe Cohen said that it is important that the bowling membership be aware of the fundamentals of what to do if a person becomes ill. McIvor explained and demonstrated the major procedures to be performed on a patient such as turning the person on his/her side, checking for a (neck preferable, or wrist) pulse, clear air passages, listen for breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or cardiac compression (sternum area). He also demonstrated the use of manual operated air bags to give a patient oxygen as well as the use of an oxygen cylinder. And he stressed that while this is being attended to by a member, another member should immediately call for an ambulance by dialling 000 and asking for the ambulance service. ”It is important that you follow the trained telephonist’s instructions and answer the questions. It is no good panicking and rambling about what’s happening. As soon as you are connected to the ambulance service and you give the address help is on its way,” he said. Following the lecture members took part in simulated situations with McIvor acting as the patient. Double Bay has a complete medical kit, including CPR oxygen bottle and attachments. * Double Bay BC has made a donation to North Bondi Surf Club is appreciation of McIvor’s lecture. While most eyes were focused on the intriguing tussle for the major crown between Gerald Weinberg and James Cook, there were two spectators who couldn’t shift their gaze from the adjoining rink where 18-year-old Tom Beaumont was battling it out with Mark Sack for the Minor title. And no wonder, because one was Tom’s father, Michael, and the other was Tom’s girl friend, Chloe Nicols. Picture above shows the delight on their faces after Tom (right) had taken the championship. AN item that might appear on the agenda of the Board of Directors next meeting; Two Bays or not two Bays; that is the question! MORRIS was not having a good day on the bowling green. After he put down a wrong bias, his skip asked him what the problem was. "It's the wife," said Morris. "As you know, she's taken up bowls and since she's been playing, she's cut my sex down to once a week. "Well you should think yourself lucky," said his skip, "she's cut some of us out altogether." THE laws of dress code as designated by the NSW Royal Bowling Association even cover the type of underwear to be worn! Yes, sir, they must be white or cream … no sexy underpants! But you can wear gloves or mittens of any colour or design! WHAT’S in a name department? Which other club do you know that has a membership list of so many confusing names of same initial first names and similar surnames. We have Harry Stein and Harry Stern or Jack Stern, John Rosen and Jack Rosen, Harry Black and Harold Black (pictured), Phil Gordon (Jnr) and Phil Gordon (Snr), Monte Lewis and Morley Lewis, not to mention the Cohen “clan”, Abe, Danny, Eddie and Ivor. NSW lawn bowls greenkeepers held their annual championship at Forster during the month, so one wonders who was looking after the greens while the greenkeepers were on the greens?
