NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) PROGAMMES IN NIGERIAN
POLYTECHNICS AND MONOTECHNICS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS INTO PRE-NATIONAL DIPLOMA COURSE
For the Preliminary National Diploma Programme, the minimum entry requirement is
five GCE O’Level/SSSC ordinary passes in not more than two sittings in subjects
relevant to the programme.
1.
Pre-ND Science and Technology
a)
GCE ‘O’ Level or SSCE ordinary passes or their equivalent in English
Language and Mathematics and three subjects chosen from:
i. Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science
ii. Chemistry
iii. Physics
iv. Geography
v. Further Mathematics
vi. Technical Drawing/Fine Arts
vii. Food and Nutrition
viii. Basic Electricity
ix. Metal Work
x. Auto Mechanic
xi. Engineering Drawing
xii. General Metal Work
xiii. General Woodwork
xiv. Home Economics
xv. Religious Knowledge
xvi. Economics
xvii. Food and Nutrition
xviii. Clothing and Textile
xix. Statistics.
Choice of the three subjects will determine the programme in which the
candidate will finally enroll for National Diploma.

b)
City and Guilds/WAEC Intermediate Certificate/Federal Craft Certificate
with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Physical
Sciences (Physics/ Chemistry) and any two from 1(a) above.
c)
National Technical Certificate (NTC) with credit pass in the relevant trade
and passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics with Chemistry
and one subject from 1(a) above.

Pre-ND Management/Business Studies:
a)
GCE “O” Level or SSSC ordinary passes or their equivalent in English
Language, Mathematics and any three of the following:
i. Economics/Commerce
ii. Business/Methods
iii. Principles of Accounts
iv. Government
v. Religious Knowledge
vi. Nigerian/Foreign Language
vii. Typewriting
viii. Fine Art
ix. History
x. Social Science
xi. Literature in English
xii. Shorthand
xiii. Book-Keeping
xiv. Statistics
b)
National Business Certificate (NBC) with a credit pass in a business trade,
Mathematics and English Language and two other relevant subjects from
2(a) above.
c)
Mathematics is exempted for Secretarial Studies.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR NATIONAL DIPLOMA
PROGRAMMES
The minimum entry requirement into National Diploma Programmes in
Polytechnics and similar level institutions in Nigeria is any of the following:
1.
SSSC/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent with credit passes in five
subjects relevant to the programme at not more than two sittings”
2.
Five credit passes in relevant subjects obtained at the final examination of
an NBTE recognized preliminary ND course offered in a Polytechnic or
Similar Post-Secondary Technical Institution.
3.
The National Technical Certificates (NTC) or National Business
Certificate (NBC) with Credit level passes in five subjects relevant to the
programme and at least a pass in English Language.
4.
In addition to 1 and 3 above, candidates must obtain a satisfactory score in
the JAMB – PCE Examination which is conducted annually.
5.
Holders of the Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) may be
given advanced placement in the ND Programme provided the candidate
has also met the minimum entry requirements into the ND Programme and
obtained good grades in the ANTC Examinations.
Applicants for Technology Programmes
All candidates applying for Science and Technology Programme must possess a
credit level pass in Mathematics and at least a pass in English Language.
Exceptions are:-
Mass Communication and Art and Design in which a credit level pass is required
in English Language (not Literature in English). A pass grade in Mathematics
and Physics is desirable but not mandatory.

Applicants for Business Studies Programmes:
Candidates should have credit passes in English Language and Mathematics.
However, for Secretarial Studies a pass in Mathematics is desirable, but not
compulsory.

At least an upper credit pass obtained from NBTE- accredited
HND Programme in the relevant or related field.
(b)
Satisfactory completion of the National Youth Service Corps
Scheme.
