Bida Road, P.M.B. 2239, Kaduna DRAFT REVISED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS INTO NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) PROGAMMES IN NIGERIAN POLYTECHNICS AND MONOTECHNICS June 2008 1 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS INTO PRE-NATIONAL DIPLOMA COURSE For the Preliminary National Diploma Programme, the minimum entry requirement is five GCE O’Level/SSSC ordinary passes in not more than two sittings in subjects relevant to the programme. 1. Pre-ND Science and Technology a) GCE ‘O’ Level or SSCE ordinary passes or their equivalent in English Language and Mathematics and three subjects chosen from: i. Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science ii. Chemistry iii. Physics iv. Geography v. Further Mathematics vi. Technical Drawing/Fine Arts vii. Food and Nutrition viii. Basic Electricity ix. Metal Work x. Auto Mechanic xi. Engineering Drawing xii. General Metal Work xiii. General Woodwork xiv. Home Economics xv. Religious Knowledge xvi. Economics xvii. Food and Nutrition xviii. Clothing and Textile xix. Statistics. Choice of the three subjects will determine the programme in which the candidate will finally enroll for National Diploma. 2 b) City and Guilds/WAEC Intermediate Certificate/Federal Craft Certificate with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Physical Sciences (Physics/ Chemistry) and any two from 1(a) above. c) National Technical Certificate (NTC) with credit pass in the relevant trade and passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics with Chemistry and one subject from 1(a) above. 2. Pre-ND Management/Business Studies: a) GCE “O” Level or SSSC ordinary passes or their equivalent in English Language, Mathematics and any three of the following: i. Economics/Commerce ii. Business/Methods iii. Principles of Accounts iv. Government v. Religious Knowledge vi. Nigerian/Foreign Language vii. Typewriting viii. Fine Art ix. History x. Social Science xi. Literature in English xii. Shorthand xiii. Book-Keeping xiv. Statistics b) National Business Certificate (NBC) with a credit pass in a business trade, Mathematics and English Language and two other relevant subjects from 2(a) above. c) Mathematics is exempted for Secretarial Studies. 3 GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES The minimum entry requirement into National Diploma Programmes in Polytechnics and similar level institutions in Nigeria is any of the following: 1. SSSC/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent with credit passes in five subjects relevant to the programme at not more than two sittings” 2. Five credit passes in relevant subjects obtained at the final examination of an NBTE recognized preliminary ND course offered in a Polytechnic or Similar Post-Secondary Technical Institution. 3. The National Technical Certificates (NTC) or National Business Certificate (NBC) with Credit level passes in five subjects relevant to the programme and at least a pass in English Language. 4. In addition to 1 and 3 above, candidates must obtain a satisfactory score in the JAMB – PCE Examination which is conducted annually. 5. Holders of the Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) may be given advanced placement in the ND Programme provided the candidate has also met the minimum entry requirements into the ND Programme and obtained good grades in the ANTC Examinations. Applicants for Technology Programmes All candidates applying for Science and Technology Programme must possess a credit level pass in Mathematics and at least a pass in English Language. Exceptions are:- Mass Communication and Art and Design in which a credit level pass is required in English Language (not Literature in English). A pass grade in Mathematics and Physics is desirable but not mandatory. 4 Applicants for Business Studies Programmes: Candidates should have credit passes in English Language and Mathematics. However, for Secretarial Studies a pass in Mathematics is desirable, but not compulsory. SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES Specific SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level subjects requirements for various National Diploma Programmes are shown below: (A) AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE PROGRAMMES Programmes 5 SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level Subject Relevant to the Programme Agricultural Technology, Biology/Agricultural Science, Animal Health and Production Mathematics and any three of the following: Technology, Geography, Forestry Technology, Food and Nutrition, Fisheries Technology. Economics, Statistics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Nigerian Language, Home Economics. At least passes in English Language and Chemistry are compulsory. 5 Agricultural Engineering Mathematics, Physics and any three of the Technology following: Biology/Agricultural Science Chemistry Technical Drawing Basic Electronics/Basic Electricity Auto Mechanics Metal Work Statistics Engineering Drawing Food and Nutrition Geography Home and Rural Economics At least passes in Chemistry, Biology and English Language are necessary. Home Economics/Food and Nutrition, Agricultural Science/Biology. Three other subjects from: Government, Economics/Commerce, Religious Knowledge, Any Nigerian Language, Social Science, History, Clothing and Textile, Plus passes in English Language and Mathematics 6 (B) PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES Science Laboratory Technology Mathematics, and two subjects from: Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry, And two other subjects from Technical Drawing, Metal and Wood Work, Geography, Further Mathematics, and Art. At least a pass in each of the three basic science – Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English Language is compulsory. Computer Studies/Statistics Mathematics, a basic Science and three other subjects chosen from the following: Economics, Statistics, Geography, Government/History, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science. English Language, Typewriting, A pass in English Language is compulsory. 7 Rubber and Polymer Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and two other Technology subjects from the following: Economics, Technical Drawing/Art, Further Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science, English Language, Metal Work, Food Technology At least passes in English Language and Biology are compulsory. Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science and any two of the following: Physics, Technical Drawing, Economics/Commerce, English Language, Additional/Further Mathematics, Statistics, Food and Nutrition, Geography Plus at least passes in Physics and English Language. 8 Textiles Technology Mathematics and Chemistry and three other Subjects from: Biology/Agricultural Science, Physics, English Language, Geography, History, Economics/Commerce, Government, Clothing and Textile, Art, Technical Drawing. At least a pass in English Language is compulsory. Wood and Paper Technology Chemistry, Mathematics and any three of the following: Physics, Geography, Economics/Commerce, English Language, Agricultural Science/Biology. Nautical Science At least passes in Physics, English Language and Biology/Agricultural Science are compulsory. Mathematics, Physics, Geography and two others from: Chemistry, Economics/Commerce, Biology/Agricultural Science, Woodwork, Metalwork, 9 Foreign Language, Technical Drawing, Basic Electricity. Plus minimum of pass grade in English Language. Leather Technology Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science and two others from: Physics, Economics, Geography, Technical Drawing, Basic Electricity. Plus a minimum of pass grade in English Language. Glass/Ceramics Technology Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and two others from: Biology/Agricultural Science, Woodwork, Metalwork, Technical/Engineering Drawing, Fine Art, Basic Electricity, Statistics. Plus a minimum of pass grade in English Language. 10 (C) HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAMMES Programme General Nursing 5 SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level or TC II Subjects relevant to the Programme. English Language, Biology/Health Science and any three subjects from: Chemistry, Physics, Economics/Commerce, Geography, Food and Nutrition/Home Management, Religious Knowledge, any Nigerian Language, plus at least pass in Mathematics. Pharmaceutical Technology Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science and two others from: Physics, Economics/Commerce, Geography, Food and Nutrition, Home Management, Business Studies, Principles of Accounting. Plus at least a pass in English Language. Dental Technology Mathematics, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry and Physics and one other credit from: Geography, Economics/Commerce, Religious Studies, Local Language, Food and Nutrition/Home Management. Plus at least a pass in English Language. 11 Nutrition and Dietetics Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science and any three of the following: Food and Nutrition, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce, Physics, English Language, Home Management. Environmental Health At least a pass in English Language and Mathematics are required. Biology/Health Science, Chemistry and any three Technology from: Government, Geography, Economics/Commerce, Food and Nutrition/Home Management, Physics, Religious Knowledge, Technical Drawing or Commerce. Community Health Plus at least a Pass in English Language and Mathematics. Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and any three from: Nutrition, Chemistry, Physics, Religious Studies, Geography or Economics. Health Information Plus at least a pass in English Language, Food and Nutrition/Home Management. Mathematics, English Language, Biology/Health Management Science and any two from: Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Economics, Religious Knowledge. 12 (D) HOSPITALITY PROGRAMMES Leisure and Tourism English Language, Geography, a Basic Science Management subject and two other subjects from: Economics/Commerce, History, Statistics, Mathematics, Arts, French Language, Government, Food and Nutrition, Nigerian Language. A pass in Mathematics is compulsory. Hospitality Management Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science, English Language and any three of the following: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Statistics, Economics/Commerce, Food and Nutrition/Home Management, Health Science, Geography, French Language. Wildlife and Ecotourism Biology/Agricultural Science, Geography and any three subjects from: Economics/Commerce, Physics, French Language, Chemistry, Religious Knowledge, Plus at least pass in Mathematics and English Language. 13 (E) ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMMES Programme Civil Engineering Technology, 5 SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level Subjects relevant to the Programme Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and any two Electrical/Electronic subjects from: Engineering Technology, Biology/Agricultural Science and one other subject. Marine Engineering At least a pass in English Language is required. In Technology, addition, credit or pass in any of the following Mechanical Engineering subjects will be an advantage: Technology, Technical Drawing, Chemical Engineering Basic Electronics/Basic Electricity, Technology, Auto Mechanic, Metallurgy, Metal Work, Mining Engineering Woodwork (for Civil Engineering Tech.), Technology. Fine Art, Statistics, English Language, Geography, Economics/Commerce. For Marine Engineering a pass in Biology is required. 14 (F) ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN PROGRAMMES Programme Architectural Technology SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level Subjects Relevant to the Programme Mathematics and Physics and any three subjects from the following: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, Geography, Economics/Commerce, Religious Knowledge, Technical Drawing/Art, Business Studies. At least a pass in English Language (not Literature in English). A pass in Art or Technical Drawing will be an advantage. Quantity Surveying Building Technology and Mathematics and Physics and any two of the following: Economics/Commerce, Technical Drawing/Art, Chemistry, Geography, Woodwork, Biology, Religious Knowledge, Building Construction, And at least a pass in English Language is Compulsory. A pass in Art or Technical Drawing will be an advantage. 15 Estate Management Mathematics, English Language a basic science subject and any two from the following: Geography, Economics/Commerce, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Art, Woodwork, Literature, Metal Work, Principles of Accounts, English Language. Surveying Geoinformatics Mathematics and Physics and any other three subjects from the following: Further Mathematics, Chemistry; Technical Drawing/Art, Geography, Economics/Commerce, Biology/Agricultural Science, English Language, Basic Surveying. At least a pass in English Language is compulsory. 16 Town and Regional Planning Mathematics, Geography and three other subjects from: English Language, Economics/Commerce, Geography, Art/Technical Drawing, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science, History, Business Studies/Accounting. One of the three subjects must be a basic science subject. At least a pass in English Language is compulsory. (G) ART, PRINTING AND RELATED PROGRAMMES Programme Art and Design 5 SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level Subjects to the relevant Programme English Language, Art and any three of the following: History, Chemistry/Physical Science, Biology/Agricultural Science, Literature in English, Mathematics, Clothing and Textiles, Religious Knowledge, Economics/Commerce. 17 Mass Communication English Language and four other subjects from: Library Studies History, Literature in English, Economics/Commerce, Arts, Government, Physical Science, Geography, Typewriting, Commerce/Principles of Accounting, Printing Technology Pass in Mathematics, Physics, Electronics/Basic Electricity will be an advantage. Mathematics and Chemistry and three other subjects from: Mathematics, Physics, Accounting, Economics/Commerce, Metal Work, Basic Electricity, Technical Drawing/Art. At least a pass in English Language is compulsory. Fashion Design and Clothing Art/Technical Drawing and any four of the Technology following: History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Mathematics, Clothing and Textiles, 18 Literature in English, English Language, Home Management. At least a pass in English Language is compulsory. (H) BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES Programme Accountancy 5 SSSC/GCE ‘O’ Level Subject to the programme English Language (not Literature in English) and Business Administration and Mathematics and any two subjects from the Management following: Co-operative Studies Economics/Commerce, Finance and Banking Business Studies, Marketing Principles of Accounts, Purchasing & Supply Statistics, Insurance Geography Public Administration Government, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Physics, History/Government. Secretarial Studies Plus any one of the following: Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry and Physics. English Language (not Literature in English) and any four subjects from the following: Business Methods, Economics/Commerce, Typewriting, Shorthand, Principles of Accounts, 19 Mathematics, History, Literature in English, Government, Geography, Religious Knowledge, Biology/Agricultural Science, French or any other foreign language. A pass in Mathematics and a basic science subject is desirable although not compulsory requirements. (I) FULL PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA/POST-HND PROGRAMMES Applicants for admission into any of the full Professional/Post-HND Programmes should possess the following: (a) At least an upper credit pass obtained from NBTE- accredited HND Programme in the relevant or related field. (b) Satisfactory completion of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme. 20
