ORIENTALIZING c.700

ORIENTALIZING c.700-600 BC
Development of new architectural designs and technological advancements
during the 7th century BC resulted in wide spread cultural change. Lacking the
distinctive Athenian geometric style, Corinth developed the orientalising style
through expanding trade connections with the east.
Orientalizing motifs appear in Corinth c. 725BC. While the earlier geometric influence
is recognised in concentric circles around the rim and base, the style predominantly
focuses on floral and botanical designs, as well animals including lions, boars, bulls,
birds and mythical creatures. These basic designs reflected aspects of culture and
religion of the time.
