Introducing Broadway Classics to a New Generation of Theater Fans
Sunday, March 18, 2012, 11 am
At the final concert in Merkin Concert Hall’s 2012 Broadway Playhouse series, children 4-11 will
discover the musicals of E.W. “Yip” Harburg (1896-1981) through mini-musicals, medleys, singalongs and interactive games. The show will feature kid-friendly explorations of Finian’s Rainbow
and The Wizard of Oz. Known for his playful, inventive lyrics, Harburg wrote the popular standards
“Brother, Can You Spare a Dime” and “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and worked with some of the 20th
century’s most well-known composers, including Burton Lane, Harold Arlen, Jule Styne and Jerome
Kern.
Now in its 6th season, the annual Broadway Playhouse series has delighted both children and adults
with playful presentations of musicals by Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers &
Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Alan Menken and many others. The cast includes Jason
Robinson, Kathryn Markey, Christina Bianco, Martin Landry and host Sean Hartley.
