ST. MARY PARISH NEWS
Hello everybody,
Who doesn’t want to be transformed? There is a reason that
the self-help section at Barnes and Noble Bookstore is
enormous. From low-fat cooking to how to use your own
body weight as a gym we can see many covers of computer
edited models who have more abdominal muscles than you can
count and are tanner than the backside of a misbehaving boy in
the 1920’s. We constantly want to be better.
To transform our lives is never easy. Think of a time when we
needed to budget and cut back on expenses; it is hard! Maybe
the doctor asked us to lose a few pounds, and all we could do
was think of our favorite snack and ask ourselves if life was
worth living if we can’t have our Twinkies and Leinenkugel’s!
Sometimes it hurts to give things up, even those things that
end up hurting us.
Lent is not a season in which we flail ourselves because we are
sadistic and want to feel pain. That is wrong. Rather Lent is
more like our souls hitting the gym. As anyone who has ever
worked out knows, there are two types of hurt. The first type
is when you ache because you did something foolish. Rather
than follower proper form, you just grabbed some weights and
pulled all sorts of muscles in ways God did not intend them to
move. This is when we bite off more than we can chew during
Lent. Like a scrawny freshman who hopes the bulk up bigger
than Hulk Hogan in one session; we end up doing more harm
than good. Convinced that we are going to do a dozen
different things in Lent, but only find ourselves becoming
more frustrated by our failure.
The second type of hurt is like one after a good workout or
long run. One thing I learned when I run is that a distance
race is all about patience and timing. Figuring out your pace
AND THEN STICKING TO IT. It can be so easy to run so
fast during those first few miles, high on endorphins and
Gatorade, only to find out that that by mile 20 you need a
wheelbarrow to move your derriere as your current pace
approximates molasses in Antarctica.
So, as we complete our first full week of Lent, I want to cheer
you on as you continue your disciples of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving! Now is a good time to re-evaluate your choices
and decisions. Are you embracing the disciplines and growing
closer to God? Hopefully, we can aid one another as we
journey not only to Calvary, but to our own Mount Tabor and
be transformed likes Christ’s radiant image. May your light be
blinding!
May God bless you always,
Father Hennes

A Prayer for Lent
O gracious Master, infuse in our hearts the spotless light of Your
Divine Wisdom and open the eyes of our mind that we may understand the
teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments,
so that having curbed all carnal desires, we may lead a spiritual life, both thinking and
doing everything to please You. For You, O Christ, our God, are the enlightenment
of our souls and bodies; and to You we render glory, together with Your eternal
Father, and with Your all holy, life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and forever.
