A few months ago a friend commented that she wasn’t sure how to get into our building, saying, “Your church has so many doors.” When I thought about it I realized that I almost exclusively use one door. I enter the building 5-7 days a week through the parking lot entrance – up the stairs, pulling open the door on the right and in I go. Her comment prompted me to go outside and walk all around the building taking notice of the doors as I went. There’s the accessible door directly to the elevator, which is used by many as their preferred entrance. Then around the corner is a little noticed door that Samir hustles through sometimes to pop right up the staircase to the piano. The next set of doors as you walk toward Wright Street is a side entrance into the chancel area which we use only as emergency exit. My husband Ed took a gorgeous photo of that door this spring when the azaleas near it were in full bloom. Round the corner and you are facing the impressive main entrance to our building—the twin set of massive double doors adorned with arches which face Wright Street. If you go up the side walk heading back toward the hidden garden we call the Garth, there’s another side door into the chancel up the stairs to your right, and a few steps later the entrance on your left into Fisher Chapel. Straight ahead and the sidewalk dead ends at the doors students regularly enter for Community Dinner on Wednesdays. Just before that, you can walk through the iron garden gate to walk through the Garth and find glass doors into the chapel corridor. Walk through that corridor and you exit through the main doors to Fisher Chapel, ending up just half a block down Wright Street from the entrance to the main sanctuary. Confusing to many, if you keep walking south past those chapel doors you end up finding doors along Springfield which access the JSM Continued on page 4 Let’s Do Lunch!! Thou shalt sing. II. Thou shalt sing with all of thy heart, all of thy soul and all of they might. III. Thou shalt sing fearlessly, ignoring the possible wandering glances of thy neighbors. (They would sing with you if they had nerve, and they will sing if you continue singing.) IV. Thou shalt sing joyfully, as it is written by the prophet Isaiah: “Sing, O Heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains.” (Isaiah 49:13) V. Thou shalt sing reverently, for music is prayer. VI. Thou shalt not be afraid to sing, for though and individual may pray in prose or even in wordless silence, a congregation must sing. VII. Thou shalt not resist new melodies, for it is written in the Book of Psalms: “O sing unto the Lord a new song.” (Psalms 96:1) VII. Thou shalt not mumble the melody, but shall sing it out loud, even if with occasional mistakes. IX. Thou shalt not hesitate to sing together with the trained voices of the choir. They want you to come and join them. X. Thou shalt not forget the words of the Psalmist: “I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live.” (Psalm 104:33) From FCC. Alas, those will not get you into our space. If you make the full circle, you’ll find the last doorway into our part of the building—down a stair case to the basement kitchen. How is it that we have so many doors and people often struggle to find their way inside? Except for Sunday mornings, most of the doors remain locked. And even if they were unlocked, many of the doors are somewhat hidden from view, known only to those most familiar with our church. And lastly, most people are like me—we have our own usual door and we don’t give much thought to other options for coming in to be with our church family. This last realization seems to me to say something about more than physical entry points to the life of the church. Many of us are in the habit of one particular entry point to church participation. Maybe we’ve always done youth ministry, or we’ve always sung in the choir, or we’ve always been a nursery volunteer. We don’t bother to notice that there are other doors into church involvement that we could try. It doesn’t mean we no longer have a way in, just because one door is no longer working well for us. This summer, I encourage you to try a different door. This summer, I ask you to think about holding open a door for someone else, too. Sarah Scott is inviting anyone and everyone to come join Jubilee in singing joyful praise on summer Sundays. Many accepted her invitation and the music on Sunday May 22 was outstanding! Also, a schedule of “lunch out” opportunities with our new staff person is open for your participation and may help you discover a new passion for our community. Our slate of church officers and other service positions in the church are currently being filled; is there a new way you’d like to be involved in church life? Maybe you have an idea for a whole new “door” that is wide enough to welcome others we have not yet met. And what about doors new folks may be trying to figure out as they are first becoming acquainted with us? How can we make entries into church life clearer and easier to come through – both for long time members and brand new visitors? In the gospel of John Jesus is as saying, “I stand at the door and knock.” I wonder which door that is. Let’s open lots of doors this summer and see where we might find him. Wright St, Champaign) on Sunday, May 29th, 7:30 p.m. The concert begins with two movements of a “Mass for Four Voices” by Claudio Monteverdi that appeared in his third major collection of sacred music that was published posthumously in 1650. Next is one of Monteverdi’s most important compositions, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (“The Combat between Tancred and Clorinda”). Monteverdi writes over four-hundred measures of music for a narrator male and female singers representing the two warriors, and a chamber orchestra of strings and harpsichord. Next comes yet another masterpiece of the 17th century, the oratorio Jephte by Roman composer Giacomo Carissimi, which tells the little-known Biblical account of a vow made by the title character that has tragic consequences. The music tells the story and descriptive choruses that narrate the battle, celebrate the victory of the Israelites over the sons of Ammon and mourn the death of Jephte’s daughter. The concert concludes with a choral setting of one of the four Marian antiphons of the Catholic liturgy, Salve Regina (“Hail Queen of Mercy”) by Alessandro Scarlatti.
