OUR DREAM VILLAGE Rebuilding Duguna Gadi Villages Hope and respect for future citizens of the world Duguna Gadi. Sindhupalchowk. Nepal. 2015 “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Nelson Mandela Introduction The 2015 Nepal Earthquake on April 25th and May 12th left in its aftermath a trail of destruction of enormity, and the loss of many lives and properties. The devastation led to a death toll of approximately 9,000, injuring more than 22,000 people and affected 8 million people, destroying and damaging over 750,000 homes. Thousands have been rendered displaced, hungry and bereaved. Centuries of culture and tradition slipped away. The epicentre of the May 12th earthquake was the in the VDC of Tatopani, which is located in the Sindhupalchowk District northeast of Kathmandu near the Tibetan/Chinese border. All 14 villages here were severely impacted with approximately 1200 people displaced. There is an emergent need of urgent recovery from the deep psychological scars that they have been exposed to. There is an immediate need to relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and restoration. All these villages lost everything… Background The villages that make up the Tatopani VDC area are reputed for their rich scenic beauty and equally splendid cultural heritage and strong traditions. With an ethnically diverse social milieu, the Sherpas, Tamangs, Dalits, Chhetris and Brahmins have been coexisting in 14 neighboring villages for over five centuries. The basis of the economy has historically been subsistence farming and agriculture and, recently, tourism. Tourism became a significant part of the economy as tourists discovered the potential of the place in terms of the wealth of natural beauty, culture and heritage with warm and welcoming people. The area is knitted together by a string of jewels including Bhairav Kunda (Holy Lake) and the 160 year old Duguna Gardi (Fort) along with extraordinary views of the nearby Himalayan peaks to the north. The villages form a tight-knit community and the people are rich in cultural traditions and heritage. They forced around 60% of the villagers to flee villages and to take shelter in temporary camps in Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu and its vicinity. Dwarika’s Foundation, Mission Portugal and their friends formed a partnership, which began as immediate relief, distributing food and other aid to over 55,000 people. An IDP camp for 350 affected people was established in Boudha in the heart of Kathmandu on an old football field, now called Camp Hope. The rest of the 1,181 people from Tatopani, Sindhupalchowk are in other IDP camps. The partners are now involved in managing and caring for the people of Camp Hope. The purpose is not only giving shelter but providing a transitional home where the people feel safe and can live in dignity until they are able to return to their villages. The Camp is composed of 18 sleeping tents, a monastery, an office, a medical tent, a library, a study area, a hand work/adult literacy tent, a big and a small kitchen, a dinning area, a food store and an open space for leisure activities. Besides the basic needs such as food, health and shelter, the partners also provide literacy and sustainability programs and skills that will be incremental in the building and development of their future villages (masonry, plumbing, electrician and carpentry). 81 children and youth have been enrolled in the nearby Samata School and College. Everybody is starting to rebuild their lives. (…) This days I have a dream village with my own idea. I wish that all the village get ok and it must greenery alaround. All the houses must be in the same level with different colour as it see like a flower in a garden. (…)If I Have got a best hospital with best doctor or nurse.
