Vocabulary glacier a huge sheet of ice that covers land gorge a deep and narrow valley that usually has a stream or river hydropower power made by capturing the energy of flowing water hydroelectricity electricity produced by water lighthouse a tower with bright lights that help guide ships peninsula a piece of land almost surrounded by water Niagara Falls is located at the border of the United States and Canada. Niagara Falls sits between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Many people go to see the beauty of the falls. The Northeast was covered by glaciers thousands of years ago. About 12,000 years ago, these huge ice sheets began to melt. They carved out the Great Lakes and the Niagara gorge, or valley. The Niagara River falls into this gorge and forms the Niagara Falls. For hundreds of years, people have been using the falls to create hydropower. Hydropower is power made by capturing the energy of flowing water. People used hydropower to run mills and machines. Today, hydropower plants on the Niagara River produce hydroelectricity. Millions of people in New York use this electricity produced by water. The Mountains of the Northeast The Northeast has many mountains. The Appalachian Mountain Range begins in Canada and runs all the way to Alabama. This range is made up of many smaller ranges. Its three main ranges in the Northeast are the Green Mountains, the White Mountains, and the Catskill Mountains. The Green Mountains are in Vermont. The White Mountains are in New Hampshire and Maine. The Catskill Mountains are in New York. The Northeast has other mountains too. The Pocono Mountains are in 20 Unit 2, Chapter 4, Lesson 1 Summary Pennsylvania. The Adirondack Mountains are in New York. Lake Placid is in these mountains. The Winter Olympics were held at the village of Lake Placid in 1932 and 1980. The Northeast Coastline The coastline of the Northeast changes from place to place. Maine is in the north. This state’s coast is known for its rocky beauty. There are many cliffs. Lighthouses help guide ships away from the cliffs. These towers have bright lights to alert ships that they are near the shore. Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, which is south of Maine. Cape Cod is a peninsula, or area of land almost surrounded by water. The Cape is a well-known fishing and vacation area. A bit more to the south, New Jersey’s shore has warm, sandy beaches. A lot of tourists visit Cape Cod and New Jersey in the summer. Only two states in the Northeast do not lie along the Atlantic Ocean. They are Pennsylvania and Vermont. © Scott Foresman 4 Niagara Falls Quick Study Name Date Lesson 1 Review Use with pages 104–109. Lesson 1: Review 1.
