BY-LAW NUMBER 42-00
- of THE CORPORATION OF THE COUNTY OF BRANT
To establish regulations for the supply, affixing, display and
maintenance of assigned municipal numbers on residences and
buildings.
WHEREAS the Corporation of the County of Brant has assigned municipal numbers to
all residences and buildings in the Municipality;
AND WHEREAS it is considered advisable that all assigned municipal numbers be
affixed, displayed and maintained in a consistent manner throughout the Municipality which will
require the replacement of most existing number plates and posts;
AND WHEREAS pursuant to The Municipal Act, being Chapter M.45, Section 210 (112)
R.SO. 1990, authority is granted for the numbering of buildings and lots in the Municipality, and
for affixing the numbers and charging the owners with the expense;
NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE COUNTY OF
BRANT HEREBY ENACTS as follows:
1.
Definitions: In this by-law:
“Building” means any building assigned a municipal number by the Municipality;
“Urban Area” means those properties located within the Municipality’s defined
urban boundaries, as listed on Schedule “A” attached hereto;
“Rural Area” means all those properties not located in an “Urban Area”.
2.
(1)
THAT the owner or occupant of a building in an urban area shall supply, affix,
display and maintain the assigned municipal number as follows:
(a)
numbers shall be at least 4 inches (102 mm) in height;
(b) (i) for residential properties numbers shall be affixed on the house, garage
or other location that is clearly visible from the road;
(ii)
for industrial/commercial properties, numbers shall be affixed on
the building, advertising sign, or other location that is clearly visible from
the road.
(2)
Notwithstanding Section 2(1) above, the owner or occupant of a building in an
urban area which is located more than 100 feet (30 metres) from the road
allowance shall erect, display and maintain assigned municipal numbers in
accordance with the rural area requirements of Section 3.
3.
THAT the Municipality shall supply the assigned municipal numbers, number plates,
posts and galvanized nuts and bolts for buildings in the rural areas and for buildings in
urban areas located more than 30 metres from the road allowance as follows:
(a)
numbers shall be 4 inch (102 mm) white reflective numbers affixed to
both sides of a number plate;
(b)
number plates shall be steel 16 gauge blue reflective plates;
(i)
5 inches (127 mm) by 8 inches (204 mm) for numbers 1 to 99;
(ii)
5 inches (127 mm) by 14 inches (355 mm) for numbers 100 to 9999;

posts shall be 7 feet in height with holes drilled to allow fastening of the number
plates;
(d)
galvanized nuts and bolts to fasten the plate to the post.
4.
THAT the owner of a building in a rural area shall erect, display and maintain the
assigned municipal number and number plate as follows:
(a)
the number plate shall be mounted on a 7 foot (2.13 m) post;
(b)
the number plate and post shall be installed a minimum of 4 feet (1.23 m) above
grade, and be positioned perpendicular to the road with the numbers clearly
visible on approach from either direction.
(c)
the post shall be located on the owner’s property at or near the front property
line, immediately adjacent to the driveway (unobscured by mailboxes, bushes,
trees, etc.).
5.
THAT each owner provided with municipal number supplies by the Municipality shall be
billed the cost of such supplies, and shall forthwith pay such billed amount.
6.
NOTWITHSTANDING the requirements set out in Clauses 3 and 4 above, all existing
municipal numbers, plates and posts affixed and erected in accordance with the former
municipalities requirements, shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of this
by-law until such time as the Municipality supplies the owner or occupant of such
properties with replacement number supplies.
7.
THAT municipal numbers shall be assigned to buildings by the Municipality as deemed
necessary, and for newly constructed buildings, at the time a building permit is issued.
8.
EVERY person who contravenes any provision of this by-law is guilty of an offence and
shall be liable pursuant to the provisions of the Provincial Offences Act, and any penalty
shall be recoverable pursuant to the provisions of the Provincial Offences Act.
9.
THAT the following by-laws, as amended, are hereby repealed:
By-law Number 5437 of the former Township of Brantford,
By-law Number 94-17P of the former Township of Burford,
By-law Number 97-9 of the former Township of Onondaga,
By-law Number 24-92 of the former Town of Paris,
By-law Number 72-92 of the former Township of South Dumfries;
And that all by-laws or parts of by-laws inconsistent with the provisions of this by-law are
hereby repealed.
10.
THAT this by-law shall come into force and take effect on the date of passage.

READ a third time and finally passed in Council, this 21st day of March, 2000.

SCHEDULE “A”
to
BY-LAW NUMBER 42-00
GUIDELINES
1.
The following are classified as “Urban Areas”*:
- Town of Paris
- Villages of St. George,
Glen Morris,
Harrisburg
Burford
Scotland
Oakland
Mt. Pleasant
- Cainsville residential/commercial/industrial areas
- Oakhill/Airport residential/industrial areas
- Tutela Heights residential areas.
- Such other residential/commercial/industrial areas as determined
by the Planning, Building and Economic Development Department.
* The Planning, Building and Economic Development Department will determine the
boundaries of the above “Urban Areas” for purposes of affixing municipal numbers to
buildings or mounting on posts.
2.
Numbers for buildings in “Urban Areas” should be affixed in a location that is illuminated
by a light from the building for visibility at night.
3.
Current number plates shall be replaced throughout the Municipality one area at a time
as determined by the Municipality. Owners and/or occupants will be advised when
number supplies will be provided for replacement as well as installation information.
4.
Contact applicable utilities, e.g. telephone, hydro, gas, cable t.v., for cable or line
locates before installation of the mounting post.

To amend County of Brant Municipal Numbering By-law Number 42-00
WHEREAS the Council of the County of Brant approved By-law Number 42-00
on the 21st day of March, 2000;
AND WHEREAS it is necessary to amend the by-law to allow for the installation
of post covers;
NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE
COUNTY OF BRANT HEREBY ENACTS as follows:
1.
THAT By-law Number 42-00 be amended by adding the following as Section 4.1:
4.1
Where this By-law permits the installation of 911 number plates on a post,
the installation of post covers is permitted, provided:
(a)
(b)
2.
the post cover is manufactured in accordance with the
specifications in Schedule B, attached and forming part of this bylaw ; and
the post cover is distributed on behalf of the Brant Community
Health Care System.
THAT this By-law comes into force and takes effect upon passage.
