Statement on the passing of US Congressman Mark Takai (D-HI)
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Cherise Imai, Executive Director of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact
Commission, released the following:
"We are extremely disheartened to hear about the recent passing of United States Congressman Mark
Takai (D-HI). His career reflects a passion for service, inspirational leadership, and deep caring for the
people of Hawaii and our country. His legacy is tremendous and this loss is felt by the many lives he has
touched.
Prior to his election to Congress in 2014, Mark served as an ex-officio member of the MIC3 Commission.
As a 20 year member of the Hawaii State House of Representatives, he was instrumental in the State of
Hawaii signing onto the Compact in 2009, and he served as a charter member of the Hawaii State
Council.
I had the honor of working with Mark for many years on military child education programs and support
for Hawaii’s public schools – he was a valued mentor and true friend.
Our hearts and deepest sympathy go out to Sami, Matthew, Kaila, his entire family and loved ones during
this time. He will truly be missed.”
The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission is a governmental entity operating under the
Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Interstate Compact ensures the
uniform treatment of military children transferring between school districts and states. It was developed
by The Council of State Governments’ National Center for Interstate Compacts, the U.S. Department of
Defense, national associations, federal and state officials, the department of education of each state,
school administrators and military families.
