New contemporary European food offering at The Magazine

New contemporary European food offering at The
Magazine restaurant at Serpentine Sackler Gallery
One of the most inspiring dining spaces in London, Zaha Hadid Architects’
designed The Magazine Restaurant at Serpentine Sackler Gallery now has an
entirely new food offering. Emmanuel Eger took charge of the kitchen as the
new Head Chef earlier this year and has, together with his Sous Chef, Felix
Weber, created vibrant and exciting new menus for breakfast, brunch, lunch
and afternoon tea.
The Magazine restaurant, Zaha Hadid’s first permanent project in central
London, is a tensile structure with a flowing membrane roof. Sculptural columns
that lead into elliptical skylights flood the room with light while the curved,
frameless glass wall creates an impression of dining in the surrounding gardens.
The fluidity of the structure is reflected in the interior, where soft grey carpets
and tables in geometric patterns can be rearranged to suit different moods
and times of the day. This impressive, serene space provides the perfect
backdrop for the talented and dynamic kitchen duo.
Emmanuel and Felix’s contemporary
European food is characterised by bold,
yet well-balanced flavours allowing the
quality of the ingredients to shine through.
Local produce is used as much as
possible, cooked simply and presented
beautifully.
Emmanuel was formerly a Sous Chef at the Dorchester Grill while Felix worked
as a stagier at some of London’s best restaurants including Alain Ducasse at
The Dorchester, Sketch, Locanda Locatelli and Pollen Street Social.
The lunch menu features Scottish Salmon Tartare, Granny Smith and Radishes;
Watermelon, Burrata and Mint and Grilled Octopus, Chorizo and Lemon to
start. Mains include Gressingham Duck, Charred Peach and White Asparagus;
Brown Butter Roasted Monkfish, Broad Beans and Oak Smoked Lardons
alongside grills (Salmon, Pork Chop, Rib-Eye) served simply with Crunchy Cos
Lettuce and Sauce Béarnaise. Desserts include Triple Chocolate Cookies and
Cream and Caramelised Pineapple, Macadamia and Coconut. Additionally,
the set lunch menu at £17.50 for two courses and £21.50 for three is a lighter,
healthy option with dishes including Chilled Pea Soup, Mint and Yoghurt and
Silver Bream, Cauliflower and Almonds.
The breakfast menu is a mix of
indulgent: Poached Clarence Court
Eggs, Bacon and Hollandaise and Fried
Egg,
Spinach
and
Montgomery
Cheddar and, healthy dishes: Crushed
Avocado, Cottage Cheese and
Piquillo Peppers, Skinny Egg White
Omelette or Greek Yoghurt with a
choice of toppings including Granola
and Honey and Pomelo and Puffed
Rice. Brunch is available at weekends and the restaurant is open for dinner on Friday
and Saturday nights during the summer. The Magazine also features a 40 cover
front terrace and the Kitchen Table, available for private dining with 10 covers.
Situated five minutes walk from the Serpentine Gallery, just north of the
Serpentine bridge, The Magazine restaurant and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery
opened in late 2013 as a new gallery, restaurant and social space. Formerly an
1805 gunpowder store, Serpentine Sackler was named after Dr Mortimer and
Dame Theresa Sackler, whose Foundation made the restoration project
possible. It has quickly established its reputation as a new cultural destination for
London with exhibitions by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Martino Gamper, Julio Le
Parc and Duane Hanson (to 13th September 2015).

Emmanuel Eger – Head Chef
Born in Frankfurt to French and German family who
shared their love for food through cooking and
dining together, Emmanuel showed early signs of
his future career when he requested kitchen
utensils for his 8th birthday. Aged 18, he
commenced his apprenticeship at the highly rated
Gault Millau Restaurant die Leiter in his hometown
where he qualified as Chef de Cuisine three years
later. The exposure to Mediterranean philosophy of
care for ingredients, using best quality produce
and simple technique, left a lasting influence on
Emmanuel. He was next invited to Salzburg to join
the Michelin-starred chef Thomas Walkensteiner at
the five star Hotel Fuschl. Working with a new wave
modern Austrian chef who eschews use of butter
for lighter and healthier cooking was another
formative experience for Emmanuel. He came to London to work with Executive Chef Henry Brosi at the five-star
Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane, where he eventually became the Sous Chef of
the Dorchester Grill. Emmanuel joined Kofler & Kompanie in 2013 and formed
part of the senior opening team at The Magazine. He became Head Chef in
early 2015.
