SCOUTS IN THE NEWS
At baseball’s winter meetings in Nashville SABR member Art Stewart was honored
by Baseball America with the Roland Hemond award for lifetime achievement. Art
has been involved for over 50 years in baseball, including scouting for the Yankees
and Royals. He served as the Scouting Director for the Royals from 1985-97 and as
a Special Assistant to the GM ever since. Art’s signings include Jim Bouton, Brian
McRae and Dan Miceli.
Baseball America also honored Jack Zduriencek, Director of Scouting for
Milwaukee, with the executive of the year award. It is great to see scouting honored
in this way as this award generally has gone to General Manager-type positions.
The Scout of the Year foundation honored 4 scouts with long-time scout Sandy
Johnson selected to receive the Director’s Award. Johnson is the Mets’ vice
president of scouting. His signings include Sandy Alomar Jr., Roberto Alomar and
Bobby Witt.
Rangers senior advisor/special assignment scout Tom Giordano was the East region
scout of the year. Giordano has spent the last 61 years in pro baseball as a player,
minor league manager, scout and player-development official. Among his signings
are Joe Kerrigan and Steve Ratzer.
Jim Walton of the Major League Scouting Bureau was named scout of the year for
the Midwest. Walton has more than 50 years of experience in the game and has
spent the last 33 years with the Bureau. Prior to his bureau service he signed Doug
Konieczny for the Astros.
Ed Sukla of the Scouting Bureau was honored as the West region scout of the year.
Sukla, a former big league pitcher, has worked for the Bureau in California since
1976. Sukla was signed by Rosey Gilhousen and Mike Mulleady.
In January at the annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation dinner two
scouts will be honored. Ralph Avila will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement
award. He was instrumental in helping open the Dominican Republic as a source of
players for professional baseball. Avila is also credited with being a pioneer in the
idea of developmental baseball academies. His signings include Pedro Martinez,
Mariano Duncan, Raul Mondesi and Adrian Beltre.
Eddie Bockman, long-time Phillies scout, will receive the George Genovese scouting
award. Eddie played parts of 4 seasons in the major leagues before becoming a
scout. His signings include Larry Bowa, Bob Boone and Buck Martinez.

PROFILE OF A SCOUT: BILL PIERRE
By Jim Sandoval
William Anthony Pierre was born June 25, 1890 in Mobile, Alabama, son of John N.
and Mary Pierre. His father worked as a brakeman and hauler for the railroad. As
a catcher he began his minor league playing career in 1910 with the Yazoo
Mississippi club. He played for various minor league teams throughout the south
during the teens and twenties, becoming a player-manager as early as 1917.
By 1920 he had moved north to Birmingham, Alabama where the 1920 census lists
his occupation as a machinist on the railroad. In 1928 he led the Montgomery club
to the Southeastern league championship. In 1930 he began the season as the
manager of the Huntsville club in the Georgia-Alabama league, resigning the
position early in the season. It was his last managing job.
Pierre then began to work in the front office of his local club the Birmingham
Barons. In 1934 he became a scout for the Southern Association club. He scouted
for Birmingham from 1934-7, signing future big leaguer Clyde Shoun. From 193846 he served as a scout for the New York Giants. Pierre scouted for the Detroit
Tigers from 1946-1971.
Pierre passed away January 14, 1973 in Birmingham. He was survived by his wife
Fannie, son William Jr., sister Mrs. Isabel Riva and a brother, Joseph H. Pierre. He
is buried in the Pinecrest cemetery in Mobile.
Signings include Ray Berres, Frank Bolling, Don Bryant, Samuel Byrd, Ben
Chapman, Ellis Clary, Jake Daniel. Frank House, John Kane, Frank Lary, Whitey
Lockman, Bobo Osborne, LeGrant Scott, Clyde Shoun, Walt Streuli, Coot Veal, Phil
Weintraub, Abe White, and Dixie Walker.

Thanks to Rod Nelson for maintaining the debut players/signing scout list as part of
the scouts committee Who-Signed Whom database, which contains many more
details pertaining to signings than what is shown above.
SCOUTS BOOK PROJECT
Work on the scouts’ book project continues. Recently Neal Mackertich completed
an excellent biographical essay on “Dirty” Jack Doyle. Tim Gay did the same for
George Huff, a Deadball era scout. We are still looking for volunteers to do a bioproject type essay on a prominent scout. Among the scouts we would like to feature
include Hugh Alexander, Ray Boone, Rex and Joe Bowen, Gene Bennett, Joe
Cambria, George Genovese, Howie Haak, Bobby Mattick, and George Zuraw. We are
open to suggestions as well. Please contact Jim Sandoval ([email protected]) if
you are interested in participating.
SCOUTS COMMITTEE PROJECTS
Work continues on the committee's major projects. The Who-Signed-Whom Database is integrated as
part of SABR's Online Encyclopedia in the members-only area of the website at www.sabr.org and
displays listings by Player and by Scout. Rod Nelson heads up this project and requests that if you
have additional entries or corrections to submit, please submit them via the website or send an email
with all the particulars including a citation for your source.
The Scouting Roster now contains over 6,300 names of scouts and player development figures from
baseball's history. Jim Sandoval is compiling this database. Eventually, this information will also
be available online integrated by Team and by Year. Please send career information, such as year,
title, territory and organization scouted for to Jim. Team media guides are a good source for this
data, but the best source we have found for historical scouts data is old copies of the Baseball
Bluebook.
We are also looking for biographical information on scouts. Birth, marriage and death information
will help with the writing of scouts’ biographies. It will also help complete a more accurate historical
record for scouts who did not play in the major leagues and are not listed in baseball encyclopedias.
The committee has compiled a collection of obituaries which have been uploaded to Frank Russo's
website at: http://thedeadballera.com/Obitlistings_Scouts.html
Scouts Committee Newsletter - Page 11
A number of scouts have given oral history interviews and a list is accessible from the SABR website
at http://www.sabr.org/sabr.cfm?a=cms,c,351,5,0 Tapes are available for $3.00 each. For more
information, contact David Paulson at (301) 854-2244 or [email protected]

SCOUTS BIOGRAPHY PROJECT
Baseball scouts are colorful subjects for SABR's Biography Project. The committee has a system in
place that we can easily work with. If you are interested in writing a biography of a scout, we
recommend that you review their research tips, author’s guidelines and the SABR style guide at:
http://www.bioproj.sabr.org/ For more info, contact Mark Armour at [email protected].
Also please let the co-chairs know so we can compile an updated list of who is working on what
biography. The chairmen are committed to provide research assistance and reference material on
scouts.

RESEARCH NEEDS, FINDINGS AND OPPORTUNITIES
SABR has contracted XMLteam as our new web developer and they have been
tasked with upgrading the online research tools. The current plan is to deploy the
first phase of SABR Encyclopedia 2.0 on the members-only website before Opening
Day 2008. Users can expect an entirely new interface featuring powerful query
capabilities on a best-of-breed dataset with the Pete Palmer database and
Retrosheet game logs and play-by-play details at its very core. In addition, users
will have complete access to the Tattersall-McConnell Home Run Log and for the
first time, historical minor league performance and biographical data.
Prior to the launch, Rod Nelson is in the process of validating the listings compiled
for the Scouts Committee Who-Signed-Whom Project with what has since been
published online in the Retrosheet Transactions database, and information from
Jim’s Scouts Roster compilation and records from the SABR MiLB DB project. In
time, the new tools will streamline the process of fact-checking the miscellaneous
anecdotal information regarding scouts and signings to these more authoritative
and mature datasets. Volunteers are sought and should contact Rod directly at
[email protected].
Any scouts-related research requests can be sent to Jim Sandoval to be included in
a future edition of 20 to 80* or shared with the entire committee via the eGroup
listed on page one. We encourage your submissions, anything from full-length
articles to interesting factoids about professional scouting from members of the
committee.

settings via the MySABR at http://members.sabr.org, send a note to Rod at
