Happy June and Welcome Summertime!
Just a few notes about all that's been happening since we last met...
1. GFWC Florida District 8 Spring Workshop was held at the Temple
Terrace Women's Club. In attendance from our club was myself, Tuky
Vargas, Marilyn Alessi, Sandra Alexander and Kathleen Hudson and of
course Cathy Geary. Carole Weaver was the guest speaker, we enjoyed a
delicious lunch and enjoyed a great skit about the GFWC elevator pitch (let
me know if you need it). We had 2 minutes to give our brag report and
learned that the 2014-2016 President's Project, Canine Companions for
Independence raised over $50,000 over the past 2 years. WOW!
2. All of the above was repeated on May 10th for their inaugural evening
meeting in which 41 members attended, Juniors, a Juniorette (Olivia Rivas)
and Women's clubs from all over District! (And this is why District 8 is
great!) . Sharon Oliphant was the guest speaker and the meeting was held
at our clubhouse and hosted by the Juniors. We enjoyed lasagna and
Greek salad and sangria. In attendance from our club was Sandra Hanna,
Elena Coates, Sylvia Reeves, Cathy Bartolotti, Anna Maria DiCarlo, Joanne
Leal, Cathy Geary and me.

The cleaning fairies will be in the clubhouse over the
next few weeks, cleaning out stuff from the (kitchen,
pantry, refrigerator, closets, etc.). So you may want
to persue these areas and take home anything not
club-related or has no future club use. Any items left
are subject to elimination at the discretion of the
fairies. This does not affect the Busy Fingers Room.

TIGER Scholarship History
Many individuals have a dream of going to college and continuing their education, however, with the rising
costs of higher education; many cannot afford this luxury. The Individual Growth in Education Recipient
Scholarship or T.I.G.E.R was created in 1999 in memory of Ralph F. Schiller. In 1926 his father abandoned
the family and his mother realized that she could not handle the responsibility of 5 children alone. She
dropped off the children ranging in age from nine months to nine years old at the local orphanage. Being
the oldest, Ralph was determined that his family would not be torn apart by these circumstances. He
saved his food from his first meal, gathered up his four brothers and sisters and ran away to his grandparents’ home. His grandparents raised all five children as if they were their own. Because Ralph had made
this decision, he also took on responsibility. He began a paper route before school and worked as a bag
boy at the local grocery store after school. As his siblings grew Ralph saw that expenses were growing as
well, so at 16 he dropped out of high school and joined the Army Air Corps.
Ralph had a successful career in the military. He served as a member of the American Volunteer Group
Flying Tigers, World War II, Korea and was an adviser during the Vietnam War. Throughout this time his
goal was to eventually return to school to complete his education. In February 1962 he learned that he
would soon be a father. He began to plan his dreams and realized that with a limited education he would
have a difficult time helping his child to do simple homework. With this realization, he went back to high
school and earned his diploma. He then applied to Merced College, California, began the curriculum, and
in 1972 received his college degree. All at the age of 44.
The goal of this scholarship is to provide assistance for continuing education to a Tampa Bay Area male
and/or female. This is not restricted to high school students, simply anyone looking to further their
education by attaining a college degree.
Several for the GFWC TWC members joined the Juniors on the Evening of May 12th for our

As your new arts chairman, I thank you for your confidence in me. I hope to include everyone in something
interesting during my tenure.
If there is something pertaining to the arts in which you have an interest, please email or call me to let me
know. I need help from each and every one of you.
Tampaarts.com is a website which tells what is happening in the arts in our community. This information
comes from the arts council of Hillsborough County. It has numerous things of interest from jewelry making
classes to performance events. If something appeals to you, let me know and perhaps we can get a group
together. There are several classifications on the website. Just click on the one that interests you. Some of
the categories are: Artists calls and opportunities, Local art events, Local classes calendar, Grant Programs,
Art Pop, all in Tampa.
Everest.com website tells about festivals such as the following: June 3-7 St Pete Opera La Boheme. - June

partially in Tampa. The film is scheduled for release this August. It is a story of money laundering on a
worldwide scale in the drug industry. Must of the real story took place in Tampa.
In addition to the above items happening mostly in June, during the next year, we hope to have many more
interesting art items for your pleasure.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH ~ Pat Kasum
I am happy to be your new International Outreach Chairman for 2016 - 2018. I plan to restore the International Dinner and have scheduled it for March 11. 2017, a Saturday night event with music, food and dancing - spouses included as well as friends! It will not be so much of a fund raiser as a fun event to celebrate
the diversity in International Food and music.
Our Luncheon is scheduled for October 6, 2016. My husband Michael and I will share one of our International adventures with everyone in the club!
Anyone interested in joining the International Outreach Committee, please call me at 727-329-8508 or
email me at [email protected].
GFWC Tampa Woman's Club's hosted a brunch for almost 50 international students. The young men and
women hail from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, China, Colombia, Venezuela, Tunisia, etc. The main goal
was to have conversations with them. What a terrific group of students. They had many questions about
our organization and we were more than happy to tell them about our GFWC and TWC history and the
many things we've accomplished in our very long history. What a wonderful event...and everyone had a
great time. Thank you Cindy, immediate past International Outreach CSP chair, for organizing this event.

Fashionollia 68 ~ Sandra Hanna Chairman
“Where Giving is Always in Fashion”
Fashionollia 68 made over $23,000 which will be used to benefit the Club and its charities. Almost 250
people attended this year. We were fortunate to have several sponsors; Milan Chic-Florida Hospital, London Society-Italiano Insurance and New York Trendsetters- Shumaker, Loop and Kendrick, and Sandra Hanna. The silent auction was a success, as well as our ad sales and vendor booths were successful. The
anonymous donation of a beautiful diamond ring by one of our club members was a great addition to our
opportunities to win either money or a great piece of jewelry.
It was a fantastic day and the celebrity models were outstanding. The clothes from Chicos, Kit’s Well
Dressed, J McLaughlin’s and Men's Wearhouse were very chic and well received by the attendees.
The Patron Party was a great way to create excitement about Fashionollia and thank our Patrons and Committee Members. The Patron Party was completely underwritten by donations and; in fact, raised some
funds for Fashionollia.
The Committee members worked very hard and volunteered over 1000 hours of their time. They not only
gave their time, but also their knowledge and enthusiasm to ensure Fashionollia 68 achieved its goal.

We received publicity before Fashionollia and after from the Tampa Bay Times, The Tampa Tribune and
the DuPont Registry. We also had a great presence on the Club’s Facebook and Website which help to
create more awareness of the GFWC Tampa Woman’s Club’s history and mission.
A big thank you to everyone who supported Fashionollia and I do hope you enjoyed your day if you were
able to attend this year. Your feedback is appreciated and will help us plan an even more successful event

Home Life ~ JoAnn Leal
I'm excited and honored to be our new TWC Home Life chair for 2016-2018! So many endeavors to explore and assist. While I intend to address my CSP partnerships as assigned, my hope is to focus on immediate community needs in our own backyard. One area would be appropriate emergency assistance to
our neighbors in need. Another would be more focus on women's health issues. Too many to list!
I challenge us in the coming months to search out those situations where we can be most effective. Hope
to see you in September...and please join our Home Life committee!

PUBLIC ISSUES ~ Sylvia Reeves
Hello Ladies. It's with great pride that I will represent you as chairperson for 2016-2017 CSP, Public Issues;
following Elena Coates will be a hard act to follow. Thank you Elena for doing such an outstanding job.
My team is in the process of outlying programs and events for our 2016-2017 Club year. Some of your favorites for Public Issues we will continue like the observation of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is falling on
Monday, May 30th and will be a three day weekend for many. Whatever you are doing, please remember
those who served our country. We also will continue with the Christmas Wreaths program, Christmas
Cards for the military and, of course, "A-Cup of Joe" for our deployed military. Also this is a major election
year so we hope to keep you well informed before November's election.
While we work on our programs for 2016-2017, have a safe and wonderful summer. God Bless you and I'll
see you in September.

How many people signed the Declaration of Independence on July Fourth? Two
Three of the first five presidents died on the Fourth of July: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Adams,
the second president, and Jefferson, the third, died on the same day in 1826, the 50th anniversary.
Which president was born on the Fourth of July? Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, in 1872.
What other countries celebrate the Fourth of July? Denmark, England, Norway, Portugal and Sweden. Denmark Other
European countries, like England, Portugal and Sweden, hold celebrations near American military bases and or spots
frequented by American tourists to boost travel during early July.
How did the Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Contest begin? It apparently started after a disagreement among four
immigrants over who was the most patriotic.
John Adams would think the country is celebrating Independence Day on the wrong date: Adams wrote that July 2, the
date the Second Continental Congress voted in Philadelphia to declare independence from Britain, not July 4, would be the
day patriots celebrated their freedom. “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History
of America,” Adams wrote on July 3. “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns,
Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
When did the Fourth of July become a legal federal holiday? 1938
Is there something written on the back of the Declaration of Independence? Yes. there is apparently a message written
upside down at the bottom of the signed document: “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” It’s not
known who wrote it or when. Since parchment was usually rolled up during the Revolutionary War years, it’s thought this
memo served as a label.
