MATERIALS FROM THE JOHNSON LIBRARY PERTAINING TO
THE ASSASSINATION OF JOHN F. KENNEDY
INTRODUCTION
This list includes the principal files in the Johnson Library that contain material relating to the
assassination of John F. Kennedy. It is not definitive, however, and researchers should consult
with the Library's archivists about other potentially useful files. The guide includes those
collections which have been opened for research in part or in whole, and those collections
which are currently unprocessed or unavailable.
WHITE HOUSE CENTRAL FILES (WHCF)
This permanent White House office was the main filing unit during the Johnson presidency,
though not the primary file for foreign policy documents. Material was filed under 60 major
subject headings, several of which are pertinent to the Kennedy assassination.

NATIONAL SECURITY FILE
This file was the working file of President Johnson's special assistants for national security
affairs, McGeorge Bundy and Walt W. Rostow. Documents in the file originated in the offices of
Bundy and Rostow and their staffs, in the various executive departments and agencies,
especially those having to do with foreign affairs and national defense, and in diplomatic and
military posts around the world.
NSF, Committee File, President's Committee on the Warren Report
The President's Committee on the Warren Report, chaired by Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon
and also known as the Dillon Committee, was appointed in September 1964 to advise the
President "on the execution of the recommendations of the Warren Commission." It
considered issues related to the protection of the President, general supervision of the Secret
Service, and White House communication and security. The papers concern the establishment
of the committee, its meetings, and its report. The file also contains material on the release of
the Warren Commission Report, disclosure of the records of the Warren Commission, and
public reaction to the Warren Commission Report. Although a few documents are still security
classified, the collection has been processed and is available.

JOHN McCONE MEMORANDA
This collection, part of the Papers of Lyndon B. Johnson, consists of notes of sixty-eight
Presidential meetings attended by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John McCone
between November 23, 1963, and McCone's resignation on April 28, 1965. In addition, there
are notes for four Presidential meetings which one or more of McCone's key aides attended in
his stead. Mr. McCone gave the collection of notes to President Johnson in 1969 to assist the
former President with the preparation of his memoirs, The Vantage Point.

ADDENDUM TO THE SPECIAL FILE ON THE ASSASSINATION OF JOHN F. KENNEDY
The "Special File on the Assassination of John F. Kennedy" consists of original material and
xerox copies brought together in 1967 from various White House and Vice Presidential files at
the time that William Manchester's book, The Death of a President, was published. In 1966, Jim
Bishop sent a draft of his book, A Day in the Life of President Johnson, to the President before
publishing.
Early in the history of the LBJ Library, the staff thought of the "Special File" as a body of
materials removed from their original locations to serve as a temporary reference file for use in
preparing answers to allegations made in the Manchester book. The staff refiled some of the
original materials in their original locations. At that time, the staff removed the Bishop material
and the Lady Bird Johnson material from the "Special File" and maintained it as a separate
collection. In 1998, the LBJ Library staff decided that provenance dictated that these materials
be reincorporated into the "Special File."

APPOINTMENT FILES
The Diary Cards in the Reading Room provide an alphabetically arranged name index to the
President's appointments. Once the date of an appointment has been determined, check the
"Diaries and Logs" finding aid for the number of the appropriate boxes in both the Daily Diary
and the President's Appointment File [Diary Backup].
The Daily Diary is a log sheet of appointments and phone calls maintained by the White House
secretaries.
The Diary Backup contains preparation material, press releases, and schedules for meetings and
appointments, as well as some reports and notes from the meetings.

[LOG OF] THE PRESIDENT'S APPOINTMENTS
Kenneth O'Donnell, who served as President Kennedy's appointments secretary, was
responsible for preparing the log during the Kennedy administration. After the assassination,
Kenneth O'Donnell continued to serve on President Johnson's staff, and O'Donnell's office
maintained this log in the same format for Johnson. Much of the information in the log and
duplicates that in the diary kept by President Johnson's secretaries (described above).

ORAL HISTORIES
Transcripts of oral history interviews may be consulted at the Library or borrowed through
interlibrary loan by writing to the Supervisory Archivist, Lyndon B. Johnson Library, 2313 Red
River Street, Austin, Texas, 78705. Interviews with the following people contain material on the
Kennedy assassination. Those marked with an (A) are available and are open for research.
Contact the Supervisory Archivist regarding the procedure. A complete list of oral histories is
available and is maintained in a card file in the Reading Room.
The LBJ Library Oral History Collection is composed of interviews conducted for the LBJ Library
under four separate projects: those done under the auspices of the National Archives; the
White House during the Johnson administration; the University of Texas Oral History Project;
and the LBJ Library Oral History Project. The names of interviewees who have participated in
more than one of these projects are repeated on this list to highlight this fact. Names of those
with multiple interviews done by the same project are repeated when terms of access to their
various interviews vary. Otherwise, the name of an interviewee is listed once even though he
or she may have given more than one interview.
Interviews which have been completed and accessioned into the Library's collection are
followed by an alphabetical symbol in parentheses describing their status and terms of access.
Those interviews without a symbol are in various stages of processing and therefore are not yet
available for research unless specifically authorized by the interviewee.
Please note that special oral history interviews in the Library's custody are not included on this
list. These special interviews include those recorded by researchers, by federal departments

THE PERSONAL PAPERS OF MERLE MILLER
This collection consists of approximately 600 audio tapes of 180 oral history interviews
conducted by Merle Miller and used in writing Lyndon: An Oral Biography. Some interviews
may contain material on the Kennedy assassination and the Warren Commission. The
collection has not been processed and is not available for research at this time. Access to any
oral history interview would require the permission of the interviewee or his/her heir.

RECORDINGS AND TRANSCRIPTS OF TELEPHONE
CONVERSATIONS AND MEETINGS, 1963-69
The collection includes over 5,000 recordings of conversations with members of Congress,
other public officials, civil rights leaders, members of the press, friends, and family. JFK
assassination-related recordings and transcripts identified by the Library staff from four periods
during the administration were opened in increments from September 30, 1993, through April
15, 1994 (please consult the finding aid for that collection for further information). The
recordings are available at the Johnson Library, and the JFK Assassination Records Collection,
located at the National Archives at College Park, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, Maryland
20740, has copies of these recordings and transcripts.
Since the original opening of JFK assassination-related recordings and transcripts, several
conversations have been declassified or opened. On September 18, 1998, the Library opened
conversations with and about Mrs. Kennedy which had previously been restricted. Transcripts
of JFK assassination-related conversations which were previously closed are also included.
Many of the recordings were NOT TRANSCRIBED. The transcripts that were made were
prepared in the White House and during the writing of the President's memoirs, The Vantage
Point, published in 1971. Researchers should be cautioned that these transcripts are not
always reliable and should never be used without checking them against the actual recordings
to assure accuracy.
VANTAGE POINT FOOTNOTES
The collection includes material which provides documentation for The Vantage Point, written
by Lyndon B. Johnson and published by Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1971.

October 1964. He worked a wide range of areas including domestic affairs, personnel and
budget issues, and congressional liaison. Jenkins spent many hours on the telephone, and he
made shorthand notes on his conversations. LBJ Library staff and a former member of the
President's staff who could read shorthand, assisted the archives staff in identifying
conversations related to the assassination of President Kennedy. A few of the Jenkins notes
were transcribed in the White House and were filed in the Office Files of Mildred Stegall and
Walter W. Jenkins.
