March News
March 6, 2017
Let’s see what we are doing this month.
Language: We continue to work on reading strategies and ways to
write through our Daily 5 program. Daily home reading is
encouraged in order for your child to continue to grow and build
confidence in his/her reading abilities. When reading at home, ask
your child about the 5 finger retell (characters, setting, problem,
events (beginning, middle and end), and ending (how was the
problem solved). I also encourage parents to continue having your
child practice writing at least 3 times a week.
Our class is continuing to work through the story writing process.
Students are practicing writing a TTKP (the Setting) sentence. This
is a sentence with the time of day, time of year, kind of day, and
place in it. They are also creating and writing about a character
using the acronym NAPP (name, age, physical characteristics and
personality characteristics). This month, we will continue working
through the story writing process by having students add the body
of their story and work with more description in their writing.
Math: We continue to work on the unit Addition and Subtraction
Strategies as well as numbers to 100. Students are learning
strategies which will assist them to remember addition and
subtraction facts to 18.
How to help your child master the basic facts.
Mastery of a basic fact means that children can give an answer in
less than three seconds. Considerable drill is required for children
to give quick responses. Use flash cards to help your children learn
the basic facts. When they don't know an answer, have them lay
out objects to solve the problem.
Social: Currently, in Social Studies, the students are taking a close
look at 3 Canadian Communities and the people within these
communities. Our focus this month is to finish up on learning about
the people of these communities and their traditions and cultures as
well as begin to explore the communities’ natural resources,
making goods and the different jobs of these communities. We
have an exciting activity coming on March 31st! Stay tuned for
more information.
Science: Boats and Buoyancy - Students will begin to explore the
unit of Boats and Buoyancy. Students will explore what sinks and
what floats, and what makes an effective watercraft. Students will
also learn about balance and stability and about different methods
that can be used in propelling a watercraft.
Reminders
Home Reading – Please ensure your child brings their bags to school
daily in order for them to exchange books on a regular basis. If your child
is reading chapter books, please have your child read at least 1-2
chapters a night.
Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences are this week! This is a great time for students
to showcase what they are learning, their accomplishments and to set
goals with their parents on where they hope to be as a learner by the end
of the school year. Please let me know if you have not already received a
scheduled time to come in.
Term Reporting
Term 2 has now been updated with marks and comments on Power
School. If you have any trouble viewing your child’s information, please do
not hesitate to ask. I am happy to help you.
April 10-12
From April 10-12, my class will have a substitute teacher. I will be
attending and presenting at a conference on these days.
School Fees
School fees are now past due. If you have not currently paid, please
either come to the school and pay ASAP or send a cheque with your child
to school. Fees help pay for your child’s school supplies, swimming days
and extra field trips (including the end of the year activities). Thank you in
advance.

Please continue to help your child master their sight word recognition
with Level 1-5 sight words. Students should be able to read each word
by sight (this means they do not need to stop and sound out the word).
Students should also be able to correctly spell each of these words
when writing. All sight words can be found on the school website under
my teacher page.
