Spring Break
Well, February was a
short month, but we
managed to fit in a few
PTA events! Looking
towards March, we will
have another short school
month with PTA events
almost every week, and
our kids will be busy with
MSA testing and finishing
up the third grading period
before we they head off
for Spring Break.
Looking back at February,
we kicked-off the month
with a PTA Meeting on
Tuesday, February 5th.
The well-attended meeting
featured a brief
presentation by the Tilden
Middle School principal,
Irina LaGrange, and the
Tilden PTSA President,
Lisa Strauss, about some
of the activities at our
middle school and
answering some
questions for current 5th
grade parents about how
they can get involved with
Tilden for next year. The
Program featured a very
informative and fun
presentation by our school
counselor, Gloria
Silverberg, and a group
of 5th grade student
volunteers. In keeping
with National School
Counseling Week, Mrs.
Silverberg gave us a brief
presentation about the
school counseling
program and how she
works with our children
through classroom
lessons and individual and
small group counseling.
The student volunteers
provided live
demonstrations to show
us the interventions and
counseling tips that they
learn. It was a great
learning experience for
the parents and the
children.
During the next two days,
the 2013 Luxmanor
Geography Bowls for the
3rd, 4th and 5th graders
were held on February 6th
and 7th. Sharon Plotnick
and Michelle Raynes and
their crew worked for
weeks to get all the
packets graded and to test
the kids to select the
competitors for each class
and it all came down to
the final event for each of
the grades to show their
stuff in geography.
The Annual Red & White
Dance/Family Disco Night
on Friday, February 8th
was another great event
for Luxmanor. Co-Chairs
Lisa Moss and Anne
Ackerman put together a
night to remember for our
Luxmanor families. It was
their final Red & White
Dance as they are both
“graduating” from
Luxmanor this year. We
will miss them greatly!!
The kids, and some of the
moms and dads, boogied
down to the great tunes
from the DJ. The PTA also
hosted a Bake Sale that
night so that everyone
could keep their energy up
while they were dancing
the night away. Debra
Cohen and Lesley
Potash and their
volunteers did another
fabulous job of keeping
our tummies happy!
On Thursday, February
14th, our children
celebrated Valentine’s
Day in their classrooms
with parties planned by
their Room Parents.
Thank you to our Room
Parent Coordinators,
KarenGreenfeld and
Pam Rothenstein, for
providing heart shaped
doughnuts and water
bottles for the parties. All
of the children seemed to
be having a great time
doing crafts, playing
games and exchanging
valentine cards with their
friends.
March brings us another
busy PTA month and we
kick it off with our 10th
Annual Silent Auction and
Dinner, which will be held
at Ron and Lori Scherr’s
home on Friday, March
1st. The invitations went
home in the backpacks
and Lori Scherr and her
committee are working out
all the final details. There
are a lot of great items
ready to be auctioned off,
including the priceless
faculty donations, and it
promises to be a great
evening of fun for the
adults. If you didn’t get a
The LuxLetter

chance to sign up for the
event, don’t worry, you can
come and register at the
door!
We will be having our
Annual International Night
on Friday, March 8th.
Gianna Vallefuoco is
planning a wonderful night
full of fun, colorful crafts,
exotic treats and a
celebration of cultures from
all parts of the globe. This is
a wonderful opportunity to
share your cultural roots with
your children’s community. A
flyer was sent home in the
backpacks with more
information on how you can
be a part of this great night.
Our Annual Science Fair will
be held on Wednesday,
March 20th. Our fabulous
organizers, Adam Lee,
Petra Lenz and Sandra
Odom will be putting on this
event in the Gymnasium.
The projects will be on
display throughout the
school day for the kids on
the 20th and then again that
evening for the parents and
scientists from 6:30 – 7:30
pm. The students will again
this year have the
opportunity to discuss their
projects in the evening with
an adult scientist. The
applications are due back to
school by Friday, March 1st.
March ends with Spring
Break and when we return
to school in April, we begin
our fourth and final quarter
of the school year. Our
PTA events in April start
with our Second Annual
“Skate into Spring”
fundraiser event. On
Friday, April 5th, Vice
President Debbie Corwin
has reserved the NHL Rink
at the Cabin John Ice
Skating Facility for
Luxmanor Elementary
School from 6:30 – 8:15
pm. The one rink will be
open to Luxmanor families
and their guests only for
the night. Come out and
skate and show off your
school spirit!
Next, we will have our
Annual Used Book Fair on
Tuesday and Wednesday,
April 9th and 10th. It’s a
great way to clean up your
bookshelves and it is
always so wonderful to
see how happy the kids
are when they can buy so
many books for so little
money. Sutton Ragheb
and her team of
volunteers have been
organizing to get ready for
the sale, so please make
sure to send your child to
school with a little money
on the sale dates.
I hope you all stay warm as
we head out of winter and
that the winds die down as
we head into spring.

MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
March is National Nutrition Month, and it is a great time to
review and revamp your family’s healthy habits. As a
parent you have a great deal of influence on your child’s
food and physical activity choices, such as by what foods
you purchase and offer to your kids, and how much (if any)
screen time you allow. Remember also that you are a role
model, your kids are watching your habits!
Advice often offered by nutrition professionals is to
increase the amount of fruits and vegetables your kids eat.
Elementary aged children should be eating 1 ½ cups of
fruit and 2-2 ½ cups of vegetables per day. A great way to
introduce more fruits and vegetables into your child’s diet is
through healthy snacking. You can find 25 tips for healthy
snacking at: http://www.eatright.org. Here are just a few
examples:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Layer vanilla yogurt, mandarin oranges, & blueberries
in a tall glass. Top with a sprinkle of granola.
Fill a waffle cone with cut-up fruit and top with low-fat
vanilla yogurt.
Peel bananas, dip in yogurt, roll in crushed cereal, and
freeze. You can insert popsicle sticks too!
Spread celery, carrot, or cucumber sticks with peanut
butter or low-fat cream cheese. Top with dried fruit
such as raisins, cranberries, or cherries.
Mix together whole grain cereal, dried fruits (apples,
pineapple, cherries, apricots, raisins) and nuts or seeds
(if no one is allergic) in a sandwich bag for an on-thego snack.
Make a sandwich with frozen yogurt and sliced banana
on graham crackers.
Serve kabobs of cut up fruit (melon, apple, orange,
grapes, pears) or vegetables (zucchini, cucumber,
sweet peppers, grape tomatoes).
•
Toast a whole-grain waffle and top with low-fat yogurt
and peaches.
• Dip baby carrots or cucumber circles in hummus.
Don’t despair if your kids don’t take to new foods right
away. Some kids need to be exposed to new foods 1015 times before they even try it! And don’t push it. Your
child is more likely to try a new food in a relaxed
environment. A good strategy is to just put the food on
the table but don’t say anything about it. You can also
teach your kids to follow their own hunger cues. Instead
of asking if they want more, ask if they are still hungry.
And instead of telling them to finish up, ask if they are
feeling full.
Healthier celebrations – you can show your child there is
more to a party than just sweets. One of the best class
parties I attended served only popcorn, and the kids had
a blast dancing to a music CD! Other ideas are to read a
book related to the party theme, and supplement (or
substitute) sweets with clementines, apple slices, grapes,
pretzels, or popcorn. The next time you go to a party,
offer to bring sliced vegetables & hummus or fresh fruit!
One last thing, check out the Colorful Food Tracker at
http://www.superkidsnutrition.com/nutritionresources/kidsactivities/. Pick a week during National
Nutrition Month to do this food tracker with your child. It
will be enlightening!

Committee)
Used Book/Music CD Fair 2013
The annual fair is about 1 month away! Please start to look through your shelves for gently used
picture books, chapter books, books on tape or music CD’s to donate. The material should range from
kindergarten level to 6th grade. Many children enjoy purchasing unused activity, craft, cookbooks and
seasonal books to give as gifts to siblings and friends, so please look for those as well.
Used Book Fair dates: April 9th and 10th
More information on how to donate material coming home in March!
Thank you for the support!

March Notes From Your Counselor
From my perspective as a School Counselor,
one of the most important things you can do to
support your child in making friends is to
give them an unbiased perspective, which is
difficult to do when you see your child’s feeling
hurt. When your child is upset, it is important to
help her/him reframe the incident, not to add on
that you hate the other child too!
Friendships are quite fluid in these early years,
and one day children love each other and the
next they could dislike each other. What I tell
children is there is never a need to tell
someone that you don’t want to be their
friend anymore. Instead you can just create
some space and distance between you and
your friend. In addition, I guide children to look
outside their friendship circle for new
friends, especially when a friend turns down
3 invitations to play.
Give them time to cool off and problem solve
because this is a lifelong skill, and you may
not always be there to help them work it out.
This does not mean you cannot guide your child
through their problems, it just means do not try
to solve it for them. Instead,
actively listen to them, reframing their
problem in a more positive light, and help
them brainstorm ideas to resolve their own
problem. This is empowering rather than
overpowering them! My suggestion to children
is that 3 conflicts with the same person in a
week is a signal that they need a “vacation”
from the friend for a period of time.
Encourage your children to look outside their
circle for new friends and plan some “playdates”
for them so you can observe the dynamics
between the friends. Also, you can role play
with your children to help them resolve any
problems they may be having.
Gloria Silverberg
Our 2nd graders recently came up with
this list of Friendship Makers:
1. Be a good friend.
2. Be kind.
3. Be responsible for yourself (no
tattling).
4. Be friendly.
5. Like yourself (stand up for
yourself).
6. Be empathetic.
7. Have a sense of humor.
8. Be positive (no complaining).
9. Smile.
Be respectful (treat others the way you
want to be treated).

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATE
In October, we held our 10th annual mini walk
for the homeless. This year, the entire school
participated during recess. We raised a total of
$1,000 for the Stepping Stones Shelter in
Rockville, Maryland.
In February, the second graders made
Valentine’s Day cards for the children living at
the Greentree Family Shelter in Bethesda. Our
second grade families also donated new
pillows, pajamas and gently used sheets and
blankets to the residents. Thank you to
everyone who participated in this Sweet
Dreams Drive. The residents of the shelter
greatly appreciate our generous donations.
Also in February, the third graders wrote thank
you cards to the veterans from the Wounded
Warrior Project. All of their cards were given to
veterans staying at the Walter Reed Medical
Center in Bethesda.
started by a 10 year old whose blankets are
donated to animal shelters as well as foster
children throughout the DC metropolitan area.
In April, the fourth graders will be cleaning up
the school grounds and planting flowers for
Earth Day. This will be a great event! Parent
volunteers from any grade are welcome!!
Finally, in May, the kindergarteners will be
collecting food for Manna’s Smart Sacks
Program. This program provides a backpack of
food for the weekend for about 1,600 children in
Montgomery County Public Schools and is
currently taking place in 50 elementary schools
in the county.
