Apollo 13: The Rest of the Story Reflections on Science and Faith Merlin Merritt February 23, 2017 4:00 pm, BSB D110 During the crisis which occurred on the wellknown Apollo-13 mission, Merlin Merritt was on console and was part of the team that developed the procedures for the Lunar Module rescue of the crew. As a part of that experience, Merritt’s faith was strengthened as he witnessed several apparent miracles in response to prayer concerning the life-threating experiences of the astronauts. While at NASA, Merritt’s faith was challenged by apparent biblical and scientific discrepancies, and he began an intensive research study to harmonize the Bible with modern scientific findings. As a result of these studies and through the support of various Christian scientists and engineers, Merritt left NASA after 28 years to continue his pursuit of theological studies, ultimately becoming associate pastor/educational minister of a church in Houston. Tapping into Einstein’s statement, “religion without science is blind, and science without religion is lame,” Merritt believes that science and faith can not only be harmonized but bring tremendous insight and witness to each other. The former NASA engineer will bring his story of Apollo 13 and science and faith to Baylor on February 23rd. Reception at 3:30 in the BSB E-Wing elevator Lobby on the 2nd floor Sponsored by: PHI BETA KAPPA Zeta of Texas Chapter For more information, contact Sherri Honza at 254-710-1271
