Plainfield Senior Citizen Center 482 Norwich Road, Plainfield, CT 06374 Telephone: 564-1455 VOL. 22 ISSUE 11 November 2015 Dear Members & Friends, Welcome to the cool, crisp days of November…..with most of the colorful leaves now fallen from the trees, it is a stark reminder that winter is right around the corner. Not only are we turning the furnace up a little more, it seems the days are much shorter and evenings are longer! A warm kitchen and the aroma of something baking in the oven and if you are lucky to have a fireplace with some logs burning, and a good book to read…somehow life seems a little less hectic in the fall. It is also a month of remembering both fallen and living servicemen and servicewomen who have all made it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms that we often take for granted. We should never forget the great sacrifices they have made and be sure to thank them for their service to our great country. We would like to welcome our newest members: Joanne Williams, Aldonna Beausoleil, Gail Hendricks and Mary Mills. Be sure to check on the many activities listed in the newsletter and consider joining in. There is nothing more enjoyable than spending time with friends with a cup of coffee (our coffee pot is always on!) and some activity or just great conversation. As we enjoy our Thanksgiving celebrations this year, let us not forget those who are in nursing homes and those who are unable to be with their families. For most of us it is a day filled with friends, family and delicious food. We should be grateful for the many blessings we have. Happy Thanksgiving! True friendship is the greatest of all blessings. TO YOUR HEALTH: THE COMMON COLD With winter fast approaching, the common cold is a topic that affects all of us. The common cold is a viral infection of the lining of the nose, sinuses, throat and large airways. Why a person is more likely to become infected at one time than another isn’t entirely known. Becoming chilled doesn’t cause colds or a person’s general health or eating habits don’t seem to make a difference either. However, people who are fatigued or emotionally distressed may be more likely to notice symptoms of a cold. Symptoms usually start 1 to 3 days after infection and the first symptoms are discomfort in the nose or throat. Usually fever doesn’t develop and a high fever suggests something other than a common cold. Most people develop a cough. Symptoms usually disappear in 4 to 10 days although a cough often lasts into the second week. A person with a cold should stay warm and try to avoid spreading the infection to others. Drinking fluids help to keep secretions loose and easier to expel. Cold remedies are popular but most of their benefits are doubtful. Because coughing may be the only way to clear secretions from the airways it is preferable to leave a cough untreated unless it interferes with sleep or causes great discomfort. Antibiotics aren’t effective against a cold and should only be used if a bacterial infection develops. The best preventive measure against a cold is good hygiene. Frequently washing hands, carefully disposing of used tissues and cleaning commonly used items and surfaces help to reduce the spread of the germs. HANDY MAN CORNER: How to stop drafts around entry doors. With heating costs going through the roof, here’s an easy way to keep heat from slipping out your doors, too. Take 30 minutes and replace the weather stripping and door sweeps around your steel entry doors. Plan to do this project on a warm day since you’ll have to remove the doors. Steel doors use a compression-style strip or the hinge side and a magnetic one for the knob side and the top. But look at the door and confirm the style of weather stripping on all three sides and the type of door sweep before you head to the store. You’ll find replacement weather stripping in a variety of lengths and colors at home centers and hardware stores. To remove the door, close it and use a hammer and a pin punch or a thin nail to top out the door hinge pins. Turn the knob open the door slightly and lift it off the hinges. When you rip out the old weather stripping, you might find that it’s tacked into place with small brads from the manufacturer. Leave them in place after removing the old weather stripping or you’ll damage the doorjamb. Then shear off the shanks inside the groove with an old chisel or drive them deeper into the groove with a screwdriver. Press the new magnetic weather stripping firmly into the groove on the knob side and top of the door frame and do the same with the compression strip along the hinge side. To ensure that the strips won’t pull out, pin them with a few –inch brads, especially in the magnetic strips. The sweep on the door bottom is even easier to replace. Pry or slide out the old sweep. Run a bead of caulk along the bottom edge of the door, tap the sweep into place and then staple it at the ends. While you’re at it, you might as well do a quick fine-tune of the adjustable threshold. Adjust all four screws until the door opens and closes without too much drag and any drafts have been eliminated (look for light between the sweep and the threshold with the door closed). Turn the screws clockwise to lower the threshold and counterclockwise to raise it. Not only is it a day to gather with family and friends, it’s also a time of reflection. I’m sure everyone has a special Thanksgiving Day celebrated with our own children and grandparents…..from having to answer the question asked each year…”what are you most thankful for this year?” to all the special folks who are no longer with us to enjoy the gathering. I remember fondly the Thanksgiving at my Grandparent’s home, ‘on the farm’ in Pachaug, with all my aunts and uncles and cousins…there must have been at least 25 if not more! The feast on the table seemed to be the biggest I had ever seen and how my Grandfather managed to not only raise the largest turkey I can ever remember seeing, to my Grandmother preparing all the home-grown vegetables and delicious desserts, I still don’t know. But I do believe that although there were many hours preparing for the day, that life was so much simpler comes to my turn…my response . Everyone seemed to enjoy being together and no one was in any hurry to leave. But times do change, from learning to prepare the first Thanksgiving dinner for our own families, to watching our own children and grandchildren hopefully join us and answering THE question….”what are you most thankful for this year?”. When it seems to always be the same….”thankful for my dear family and for the cherished memories each Thanksgiving brings.” Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. 8:30-9:30 Exercise with Christine 10:00am CARD PARTY 1:00pm Writing Club (see dates below) Senior Club Office Mon-Fri 9:00-1:00pm With Advanced Reservations 9:00-10:00 Exercise with Jeanne 9:00-12:00 Health Clinic Open 10-11:30am Rummikub 1:00-4:00 BINGO Plainfield Senior Center Mon-Fri 8:30-4:30pm Lunch Served Tue & Thu 11:30am Breakfast Wd & Fri 9:30am Visit the center Library MANY GREAT TITLES 8:30-9:30 Exercise with Lisa 9:30-11:30 Art Lessons 9:30-11:30 Wii for Seniors 1:00-2:30 Chorus WEDNESDAY TUESDAY MONDAY PLAINFIELD HOUSING AUTHORITY 41 Sunny Acres, Moosup, CT 06354 CHERYL L.
