Breakfast ‘breaks the fast’ after a nights sleep. It is an important meal and should provide 30% of our daily nutrient needs. If you don’t eat breakfast it is more likely you will be hungry by mid-morning, feel restless, lack energy and have poor concentration. Buying a healthy snack at this time may sometimes be more difficult than having a healthy breakfast at home. If you want cereal the best choices are those that are high in fibre and low in sugar, fat and salt. To help you make a choice it is important to read the nutritional information panel. Use the ‘per 100g’ (%) amount listed on the label when evaluating the cereal as the serve size is only a guide and may not be the amount that is eaten. The ingredients list also provides useful information. Ingredients are listed in descending order of amounts i.e. the highest ingredient amount is listed first. This list will assist in identifying the source of added sugars, fat and salt. Many cereals contain too much added sugar, often ‘hidden’ under other names such as honey, malt and glucose syrup. Ideally try to aim for the minimum amount of added sugars, fat and salt. Total sugars refers to added sugars together with sugars occurring naturally in the product e.g. dried fruit. Sugar contributes to tooth decay and adds nothing but empty calories to a food. So it is important to choose a cereal with low sugar content and try adding fresh fruit and yoghurt to enhance the flavour, instead of putting sugar on your cereal.
