IntryingtothinkwhatImightwriteinthisspaceforthe
currentNewsletter,Ifoundmyselftotallyflummoxed,for
once.Usually,IfindinspirationinaphotographIhavetaken.
Notthistime!
ItwasasIwasflickingthroughthesepagesthatsomething
struckme.EacheditionofMoShaolalwayshadatleastone
itemrecognisingthegenerosityofthepeopleofourarea,the
SouthMayoarea.Timeaftertime,Iamsaying“thankyou”
onbehalfofthemembersoftheBranchtosomeindividualor
groupofpeopleforwhattheycontribute.
So,inthisissuealone,wethankthepeopleofourareafor
theirgenerosityintheChurchGatecollectionandwethank
thoseun-namedvolunteerswhostandoutsidethechurches
atthebeginningofeachMarch,collecting;wethankthe
pupilsofMinaNationalSchool,theirteachersandparents;
wethank(yetonceagain)PatsyGuilfoyle;werecognisethe
workoftheCareShopandwethankTraceyCannon.And
thatisjustourmostrecentcontributors.Wehavebeen
blessedinthesupportwehavereceivedthroughtheyears.
But,whatwealsomustrecogniseisthegenerosityofthe
peopleofourcommunity:thosemen,womenand,yes,
childrenwhocontributetotheeffortsofourcollectors.We
areluckyinSouthMayotoliveinacommunitywhose
generosityofspiritenablesus,theSouthMayoBranch,to
worktoalleviatethelivesofpeoplewithMSinourarea:we
arehereforyou.

WilliamErnestHenley
WilliamHenley(1849-1903)wasanEnglishpoet
andcriticwhosufferedfromtuberculosis.He
wrotethepoemin1875whenhewasrecovering
afterhavinghadoneofhislegsamputated.The
Latinwordinvictusmeansunconqueredorunsubdued;italsomeansinvincible.
InthelastissueofMoShaol,wetoldyouabout
ayoungCastlebarwomanwhowassettingout
toclimbMountKilimanjaroinTanzania,
accompaniedbysomefriends.
SheisTraceyCannon,whojusthappenstobethe
daughterofourChairman,LiamCannon.
Well,Traceyachievedhergoal,asthephoto
belowshows.Tracey’saimwastoraise€2,000for
theSouthMayoBranchofMSIreland.Infact,
Traceyraisedthemagnificentsumofaround
€5,400!Ofthat,€4,400willgototheBranchand
€1,000towardsresearchintoMS.

meeting.
PatsyGuilfoylehasdoneitagain!Patsy,
whosewifeisapersonwithMS(PWMS),has
beendoggedlycommittedtoraisingmoneyto
helpthoseafflictedwithMS.
Avaacknowledgedanexcellentprogramme
ofactivitieswhich,shesaid,supports
personswithMSinourareaandalsoshows
theefficiencyoftheCommittee.Shealso
acknowledgedtheCommittee’s
participationinnationalevents,and
paymentofthe15%contributiontothe
WesternRegionalOffice.Sherecognised
thattheSouthMayoBrancharegood
partnersandthankedtheCommitteeforthe
healthydialoguebetweentheBranchand
NationalOffice.Shealsothankedthe
Committeeforitshardworkduringthe
year.

SouthMayoBranchofMSIrelandtookplace
ontheweekendof4th–5thMarch2017.
TheannualChurchGateCollectionisthebiggest
fund-raisingeventinthecalendaroftheSouth
MayoBranch,inwhichweusuallytakeinupto
50%oftheannualincomeoftheBranch.
Thisyear,weraisedthemagnificentsumof
€19,636.50,nearly€1,000morethanwas
collectedin2016.
Thankyoutoallwhohelpedwiththecollecting,
andalsotoallthosewhogavegenerously.
